'The Apothecary Diaries' Maomao tops Anime Grand Prix as 2025's best character
Maomao from The Apothecary Diaries has been named Best Anime Character of 2025 at the 47th Anime Grand Prix Awards, surpassing Solo Leveling's Jinwoo, who had dominated the Crunchyroll Awards earlier this year. Solo Leveling has achieved widespread international popularity, with its fast-paced storytelling and high-intensity battles contributing to its success. It was awarded Anime of the Year at the Crunchyroll Awards, and its protagonist, Jinwoo, received Best Main Character at the same ceremony. However, in Japan, Solo Leveling's reach is more modest, and this was reflected in the Grand Prix results. The Anime Grand Prix Awards, organised by the magazine Animage, are decided by the votes of its readers and are highly regarded within the Japanese anime community. This year, Maomao, the lead character of The Apothecary Diaries, secured the top position. Her role across the first two seasons of the series has been praised for her distinctive characterisation and development, setting her apart in a competitive field. The Apothecary Diaries has steadily gained recognition beyond Japan, with many viewers now anticipating its third season. As The Apothecary Diaries moves towards its next season, Maomao's win may further boost the series' profile internationally, while Solo Leveling continues to maintain its strong global fanbase.

Netmarble Unveils 'Solo Leveling: Karma' Isometric RPG, Explores Untold Chapter In Jinwoo's Story
Everyone's favourite S-Rank hunter is about to embark on his second gaming adventure, as Netmarble has announced a brand new game, Solo Leveling: Karma , an isometric roguelite action role-playing game (RPG) due out for PC and mobile platforms. The announcement came via a reveal trailer during Crunchyroll's panel at Anime Expo over the weekend, showcasing its flashy isometric hack-and-slash action featuring protagonist Jinwoo against notable foes like the Statue of God and the High Orcs. Like the manhwa (webtoon), Jinwoo will also be able to summon shadows such as Igrs and Iron to assist in battle. Take note, however, that the trailer features spoilers for the manhwa series that has yet to be covered in the anime. According to the teaser, the game is set to follow an untold chapter in Jinwoo's story, exploring a 27-year gap not covered in the original work as he 'enters the fray of an endless war once again.' Apart from its general gameplay and setting, no further information was revealed on its roguelite formula, so fans will have to wait and see what kind of progression systems the title will feature, and with it being a mobile release, how egregious its microtransactions will be. This marks the game based on the IP by developer Netmarble, who previously helmed the 2024 mobile gacha action RPG Solo Leveling: Arise , which is also set for a 2026 follow-up, Solo Leveling: Arise Overdrive , a separate standalone title with enhanced multiplayer features due to launch on Xbox consoles and PC. The release date and platforms for Solo Leveling: Karma have yet to be announced. The game is based on the popular 2018 manhwa series, which spawned an anime adaptation in January 2024, which is currently awaiting its third season. 'In a world where hunters, human warriors who possess magical abilities, must battle deadly monsters to protect mankind from certain annihilation, a notoriously weak hunter named Sung Jinwoo finds himself in a seemingly endless struggle for survival.' reads the synopsis for Solo Leveling , 'One day, after narrowly surviving an overwhelmingly powerful dungeon that nearly wipes out his entire party, a mysterious program called the System chooses him as its sole player and in turn, gives him the extremely rare ability to level up in strength, possibly beyond any known limits.' Kevin is a reformed PC Master Race gamer with a penchant for franchise 'duds' like Darksiders III and Dead Space 3 . He has made it his life-long mission to play every single major game release – lest his wallet dies trying. Netmarble Solo Leveling Solo Leveling: Karma

Social minorities deserve equal acceptance, respect, says Jogye Order leader
The Ven. Jinwoo calls for LGBTQ+ and disabled people to be recognized as part of the community As society advances, social minorities often face greater challenges and hardships than the majority, said a top Buddhist leader, calling for more respect for human life and fairness for those who are marginalized. "There are many types of workers in society, such as foreign workers and delivery workers, who are the backbone of today's society. They are considered essential because everyday services would halt without them," said the Ven. Jinwoo, president of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, during a special Buddhist ceremony held Sunday at Bongeunsa to mark his 1,000th day in office. "However, despite their crucial role, they often face poor working conditions, including low pay, long hours and little job security. Now, making a piece of bread has become more important than human life, and profit matters more than human life and dignity," the leader of the largest Buddhist sect in Korea added, referring to a string of deaths at a bakery factory in recent years. Jinwoo said that although cities may seem richer on the outside, hidden places like alleyways have become spaces where loneliness is growing, urging greater awareness and empathy for these unseen struggles. Those in the LGBTQ+ community and people with disabilities should be recognized as part of the greater community, he continued. He stressed that they deserve acceptance, respect and support like everyone else. "Buddhism is a religion that respects all walks of life and accepts every being without judgment. ... In that vein, we must not turn our backs on sexual minorities, who often suffer the most from hate and discrimination," the Ven. Jinwoo noted. "The true Buddhist way — the path of the bodhisattva — is to show compassion for those suffering and to have the courage to stand up and speak out for them," he added. Among those attending the ceremony was Yi Ho-rim, an activist with Solidarity for LGBT Human Rights of Korea, who expressed hope that Buddhism would continue to help build a society of dignity and equality for all. "Korean society still struggles to accept sexual minorities, so many can't express their identities openly at home, school or work. Since Buddhism was the first religion to support the Anti-Discrimination Act, I hope it keeps advocating for the law and helps create a society where everyone can live with dignity and equality," she said following the service.

33 artifacts relocated to National Palace Museum after Tuesday's blaze at Jogyesa complex
Central Buddhist Museum exhibition ends early in wake of fire Thirty-three Buddhist artifacts displayed at the Central Buddhist Museum next to Jogyesa, a Buddhist temple in central Seoul, were relocated to the nearby National Palace Museum of Korea late Tuesday, after a blaze broke out at a building within the temple complex earlier that day. The Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism on Wednesday issued a statement confirming that it had safely moved 33 artifacts that were on display at the museum in a preventative measure prompted by the fire. The relocated items include nine state-designated National Treasures, nine state-designated Treasures, two Regional Tangible Cultural Heritage and 13 nondesignated artifacts. No damage was reported or found to the artifacts, it added. Other artifacts held at a storage facility located at the museum's third basement level were not part of the transfer. The decision to keep them at the storage facility came after a safety check, a senior official at the largest Buddhist sect in Korea told The Korea Herald. A fire broke out at the international conference hall on the second floor of the Korean Buddhism History and Culture Memorial Hall next to the temple at 10:22 a.m. The Central Buddhist Museum is on the basement level of a building connected to the Korean Buddhism History and Culture Memorial Hall. The fire was extinguished at 11:57 a.m. Following the fire, an exhibition titled "Hoseon Euigyeom: The Buddha Revealed at the Tip of the Brush" at the museum, originally scheduled to run through June 29, ended Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Ven. Jinwoo, president of the Jogye Order, apologized for the lack of safety measures and for causing concern to the public.
