Reliance launches JioPC, a service that turns your set-top box and TV into a PC
Jio Platforms, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, has launched a new cloud-based virtual desktop service that converts your existing set-top box into a full-fledged PC. Called JioPC, the service works with any compatible TV connected to a Jio set-top box and is currently available for free to users through a waitlist. Jio says that the new service is aimed at making computing more accessible and affordable in areas where PC penetration is low. While the company is yet to share details about the operating system powering JioPC, it looks like the service is using its proprietary Jio Platforms OS. Also, users will have to connect their set-top box with a USB or Bluetooth-enabled keyboard and mouse to use JioPC. It comes pre-installed with LibreOffice, an open-sourced free-to-use office suite that includes apps for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and more, but you can also access Microsoft Office via the built-in web browser. As of now, JioPC does not support external peripherals like a camera and printer, but Jio says that will change in the 'near future.' In case you are wondering, JioPC will allow users to make use of basic features like web browsing, word processing and even offer e-learning sessions. Moreover, users will also be able to install and run a bunch of apps. Compared to PCs and laptops, JioPC emerges as a much more affordable solution for students and users who want access to a PC without investing a lot of money. Also, since all the information is stored and processed on the cloud, it eliminates the maintenance and upgrade costs. To use JioPC, you will need to have an active Jio set-top box subscription. Users can either choose a Jio plan that includes access to JioPC or buy a lifetime subscription for Rs 5,499. One thing to note is that since this is a cloud-based service, you will need to have an active internet connection at all times. 1. To use JioPC, you will have to power on your Jio set-top box and head over to the apps section. 2. Here, find and install Jio PC and connect a USB or Bluetooth-enabled mouse and keyboard to the set-top box. If you are unsure, Jio has mentioned a bunch of compatible devices on its website that you can connect to the set-top box. 3. On the page that appears, enter your details and sign up for a JioPC account. When done, tap on the 'Continue' button to proceed. 3. Now, click on the 'Launch now' to start using JioPC. While cloud computing services have been available for years now, most of them are designed for enterprise users. But with JioPC making computing affordable for consumers, it will be interesting to see if other companies follow in Reliance's footsteps and launch their affordable virtual desktop solutions.

LG has unveiled its flagship television in India — the massive 97-inch OLED Evo G5 Ultra-Large smart TV, priced at ₹24,99,990. While the exact release date and full specs are still under wraps, the phone has appeared on iQOO's official website. According to a report from Mint, a recent listing on benchmarking platform Geekbench suggests that the MediaTek Dimensity 7400 chipset may power the new device. With the release of the Vivo X200 FE, the company has made its entry into the competitive compact flagship space, delivering high-end features — including a Zeiss-engineered camera — in a smaller body. The X200 FE is positioned as a direct competitor to the OnePlus 13s, which launched earlier this year with similar design principles. How do the two stack up against each other? Following the debut of new foldable smartphones from Samsung and Vivo, attention is now turning to Google, which is expected to unveil new hardware soon. Speculation points to the Made by Google 2025 event taking place next month, where the company is anticipated to showcase the Pixel 10 series — including the Pixel 10 Pro Fold — along with new-generation wearables such as the Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Buds 2a. Apple is reportedly preparing to launch the third-generation Watch Ultra later in the year. The sale, which runs through July 18, features discounts of up to 41% on flagship smartphones like the Galaxy S25 and S24 series, as well as select Galaxy A series devices. As per the company's official release, tablets, wearables, and accessories are available at markdowns reaching up to 65% off the maximum retail price. The Vivo X200 FE stands out in the mid-premium segment by combining near-flagship performance, capable camera hardware, and useful AI features in a compact design. Powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9300+ chipset, it delivers smooth performance for daily use and gaming, although it tends to warm up during heavy use. Its sleek design, strong battery backup, and standout main and telephoto cameras make it a compelling choice in a competitive market. According to Bloomberg, referencing a study by McKinsey & Co, UK businesses are becoming more selective in hiring for positions that could be impacted by AI developments. The findings indicate that artificial intelligence is contributing to a broader cooling in the nation's employment trends, especially in sectors like tech and finance, where job listings have declined significantly. Mark Zuckerberg has shown a willingness to wait for returns on large investments, such as WhatsApp, which remained ad-free for nearly a decade after its $19 billion acquisition. Now, as Meta pours $65 billion into AI infrastructure and competes to attract top talent, there are growing signs that the era of free AI tools may be nearing its end. Industry watchers anticipate that Meta will soon pivot toward monetising these offerings, a move that has left investors curious about the company's long-term strategy.

JioPC could become a new way to offer basic computing to homes that already have TVs but no computers. According to the government data, India has around 57 million active set-top box users. But the traditional direct-to-home (DTH) TV market is declining as more people switch to online streaming. Between March last year and this year, DTH subscriptions dropped by 8%. Meanwhile, the overall PC market in India grew over 8% in Q1 2025, reaching 3.3 million units. Still, India lags behind countries like the US and China in PC ownership, mainly due to the high cost of devices and the popularity of smartphones. 'JioPC is a very effective way for the Mumbai-headquartered company to increase its user base,' Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint told TechCrunch. He noted that while 70% of Indian households have a TV, only about 15% own a PC. However, he also warned of a challenge: 'You need to convince people that you can still use a PC on your TV using the set-top box.' Prabhu Ram, vice president at CyberMedia Research, believes the product could succeed among new users in underserved regions. 'While its potential reach is broad, its success will depend on execution — especially in addressing connectivity gaps and digital literacy,' he said. AI Masterclass for Students.
