21 affordable must-haves every New Yorker needs in their life

Hello, New York! I moved to the city five years ago and, like any good New Yorker, quickly learned how to stretch a dollar without sacrificing style or sanity. What do Angelinos know about schlepping? Not as much as the average Brooklyn granny, I'll bet you that. It takes a shrewd knowledge to keep up with the hustle and bustle here, so with the help of my fellow New York-based colleagues, I've curated all the best products for urban living. New York is an expensive place to call home, but with these affordable finds, you can make life here more comfortable, practical, and efficient. A chic granny cart Lauren Savoie/Business Insider Schlepping is a careful science. My roommate and I invested in our own Hulken, and it forever changed the way we buy groceries. Learn just why we love it in our full Hulken review. A portable fan for hot summer subway rides Jisulife Handheld Mini Fan Several of our editors swear by this mini fan for the summer. In addition to a fan with two speeds, it's also a portable battery charger and a flashlight. Check price at Amazon Highlights Compact and cute design Up to 19 hours of continuous cooling time Doubles as a phone charger and flashlight Wait any longer than five minutes for the subway in a stiflingly hot station, and you'll be wishing you'd scored on this deal. Our deputy executive editor loves this Amazon mini fan because it's portable enough for her purse and inexpensive. A big blanket for when the whole friend group gets together Lauren Savoie; Les Shu/Business Insider Our New York-based editors came together at a park near our office to test the best picnic blankets. We liked this beach blanket because it's big enough for large groups but folds up compactly for storage, and it stays put in windy weather. If you and your friends are regulars at Jacob Riis, you'll appreciate this ultraportable beach blanket. Headphones that block out all the city noise Noise-canceling headphones saved my sanity when construction began across the street from my apartment. These over-ears let you switch between quiet and aware modes with a simple tap. This way, you can enjoy stillness and be aware of your surroundings on the train while you listen to music. Read our full guide to the best noise-canceling headphones. A shoe tray so you won't track sidewalk grime into your apartment Ottomanson Multi-Purpose Boot Tray This waterproof tray's raised edges mean your wet shoes won't leak onto the floor. You can also use it as a pet food bowl tray or a place for draining plants. Check price at Amazon I live in a "shoes off" apartment. I leave mine on a rack near my door, but when it's wet outside, I slide this shoe tray out from underneath the bottom shelf so there's no mud, rainwater, or heaven-knows-what-else leaking from my shoes onto the floor. Anti-chafe balm for long city walks Sweaty summer walks can cause uncomfortable chub rub, so we recommend this anti-chafe stick for the thick-thighed girlies. A cute carry-all that zips closed Style editor Samantha Crozier has tested dozens of totes in search of the best work bag for women. She touts this affordable nylon work bag as both weather-resistant and lightweight, making it ideal for rainy commutes. Buckets of hand sanitizer Pack thousands of people into small spaces like the subway and germs are bound to spread. My first year in NYC, I got sick roughly once a month. Now I keep one of these compact spray hand sanitizers in my bag wherever I go. A TV you can move around your shoebox apartment Samantha Crozier/Insider "I first saw LG's portable StanbyMe TV on TikTok," writes Samantha. "As a New York City apartment dweller, I'm always looking for space-saving options." You can easily wheel it over to your workspace, kitchen, or bedroom for portable entertainment. Read our full LGStanbyME review. A sturdy umbrella that can withstand city wind Summer rainstorms can happen in a flash. To save precious space in your tote bag, we suggest this pick from our guide to the best umbrellas. It's super light and compact, and it won't collapse as you walk down the wind tunnel-like streets of Manhattan. Memberships that make city life a little easier Paying a chunk up front can save you money in the long run, especially in a city like New York. The most essential memberships for city dwellers are Citi Bike, Instacart, and Class Pass. Citi Bike is often the easiest and most direct way to get around, but bike rides and unlocks are significantly more costly if you're not a member. Bundling a membership via Lyft essentially gets you three subscriptions in one: Citi Bike, Lyft Pink, and Grubhub+ — and it's $20 cheaper than the base Citi Bike membership. You need only make the mistake of buying a $10 stick of butter at Gristedes once to swear off most city grocery stores. Unless you're right near a Trader Joe's, I've found it's actually cheaper (or comes out to about the same cost) to order groceries via Instacart. You can shop around for the best prices and get bags and bags of groceries delivered right to your door — no schlep required. The annual Instacart+ subscription gets you lower fees and comes with an NYT Cooking and Peacock streaming subscription, which makes it worth the cost. New York has so many great boutique fitness studios and classes to try out that it's hard to commit to a single gym membership. ClassPass offers a way for you to take classes or book gym time at studios all across the city, and the rates are typically better than booking each class à la carte. You can try a free trial for two weeks before you commit. An AC that you don't have to worry about dropping out your window Windmill 10,000 Btu Inverter Window Air Conditioner with WhisperTech If aesthetics are important to you, Windmill makes one of the most attractive and easy-to-install ACs on the market. This 10,000 Btu unit should comfortably cool up to 450 square feet and is WiFi enabled so you can control it from anywhere. Check price at Amazon This is a great air conditioner for New Yorkers because it's super easy to install, meaning you won't have to worry about dropping the unit out of your apartment window. Sneakers that can handle 20,000 step days Gabrielle Chase/Business Insider I've tested a lot of walking shoes all over my neighborhood. As much as I love stepping out in some fashion-girl shoes, I keep this OOFOS pair by my apartment doorway because they pull on easily, so I can slip out to the bodega at a moment's notice. A white noise machine to drown out traffic Homedics SoundSleep White Noise Sound Machine The Homedics SoundSleep White Noise Sound Machine is a fantastic entry-level sleep machine that is easy to use and effective, with six types of relaxing noise settings. It's smaller and more lightweight than most white noise machines, making it perfect for traveling. Check price at Amazon Getting a good night's rest with blaring car horns outside a street-facing bedroom window is no easy task. A lightweight white noise machine by Homedics lets you drown out busy traffic sounds in your home or abroad. Read more about how this portable white noise machine can help your sleep routine. A powerful roach bait so you don't have to share your apartment with creepy crawlies Combat Max 12-Month Roach Killing Bait Common, small roaches don't require anything too complicated, and Combat Max 12-Month Bait Stations are plenty effective — and discreet. Roaches are an unfortunate fact of life in any NYC apartment building — no matter what your realtor tells you. If you want to keep the insects from infiltrating your unit, a solid bait will keep them at bay. Read more in our guide to the best roach killers. A sleek cordless vac that doesn't take up much space Dyson V8 Plus Cordless Vacuum For a Dyson at the lowest price possible, you can't go wrong with the basic but mighty Dyson V8 Plus Cordless Vacuum. It offers two cleaning modes, three attachments, and a cleaning time of up to 40 minutes. Check price at Amazon My old clunker of a vacuum was heavy, loud, and took up too much room. Dyson makes tools like hair dryers and vacuums that are a genuine pleasure to use. I find myself cleaning with this cordless unit out of habit more than necessity. My roommates and I love how it stows neatly onto a wall mount, letting us reclaim our closet space. Read more in our guide to the best cordless vacuum cleaners. A phone mount you can use on a Citi Bike Lamicall Bike Phone Holder This adjustable phone mount secures your device to the handle of your bicycle so you can navigate hands-free. Check price at Amazon The most common (and potentially deadly) Citi Bike offense I witness is people navigating busy city streets while looking down at their phone. With this bicycle phone mount, you can keep your eyes on the road and find your bearings more easily. Sandals that'll still feel good after miles of walking These supportive, waterproof slides, featured in our guide to the best walking sandals for women, are better for city streets than any other slides we've tried. Their strap comes over the top of your foot rather than down around your toes, so they stay in place better. Plus, the platform gives you a little separation between the sidewalk and your toes. An air purifier to filter out city smog Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty Air Purifier If you need a powerful, energy-efficient air purifier for medium to large rooms, the Airmega AP-1521HH Mighty is your best option. It includes three filters and ionization, and the fan speed adjusts based on the air quality. Check price at Amazon Check price at Walmart What we like Performed the best at removing air pollutants and VOCs HEPA filter lasts up to a year Lowest energy consumption of all the models tested Energy Star Certified What we don't like Noisy on the highest setting Bulky shape No remote Specifics CADR:Smoke: 234, Dust: 248, Pollen: 232 Room size:Up to 1,748 square feet Weight:13.2 pounds Size:9.37" x 16.81" x 18.30" Auto-mode:Yes Filter type:True HEPA and carbon Heidi Borst/Business Insider Do you remember that strange summer day when the Canadian wildfires turned our sky orange? I do, because I have a distinct memory of showing my friend our guide to the best air purifiers before she could impulse-buy anything subpar. This air purifier will help clear your apartment from harsh pollutants and can improve the overall respiratory health of your household. 10 Genius Travel Products You'll Wish You Had 10 Trips Ago—From $7

Many pieces need to fall into place to make a travel day run smoothly, but while so many factors are out of your control, there's one thing you can take into your own hands: your packing list. Having the right gear can make the stresses of the day fade away, and while seasoned travelers may already have a collection they swear by, there are a few key items you may be missing that you'll wish you'd been packing all along. In preparation for the rest of the summer trips and adventures you have planned, we've rounded up the 10 travel essentials your repertoire could be lacking, with everything coming in under $35 and many of them being tested and vetted by this travel writer. From items to keep you comfy to packing hacks that will maximize your storage space, these travel must-haves will change your trips for good, with prices starting at just $7. After an hours-long train ride in a car with no air-conditioning, I was delighted that I'd remembered to pack my Jisulife Handheld Portable Fan—and was even asked by another passenger how much I would sell it to them for. If you're not already traveling with a portable fan, this handheld beauty will be a lightweight and long-lasting addition to your personal item; it's not only a game-changer for travel days but also for summer sightseeing excursions, hikes, long attraction queues, and more. It's programmed with five speeds that are whisper-quiet and impressively effective, and it can even provide up to 16 hours of cooling on a single charge. Best of all? It's now on sale for under $20. You may have already hopped aboard the packing cube train, but if you haven't tested out compression cubes yet, get ready to free up an unfathomable amount of space in your luggage. This set of six bags from Bagail comes with five cubes of varying sizes, as well as a designated shoe pouch to keep everything neatly tucked away. Mesh exteriors make it easy to determine exactly what's packed inside, so you don't need to unpack entirely to find your outfit for the day, plus they're fitted with durable handles at the top for smooth removal from your luggage. Now on sale for under $4 per bag, your packing experience will never be the same. Portable chargers have long been a travel must-have, but if you're aiming to do away with the tangle of cords in your carry-on during your next trip, a power bank with built-in cables should be the next addition to your shopping list. Seeing as more than 10,000 people picked up the Sabani Portable Charger in the last month alone, you'll be in good company after snagging this power bank while it's on sale for 32 percent off for a limited time. It's loaded with unbeatable features like the capacity to charge up to six devices at once, a compact design, and a three-times-faster charge than other devices, according to the brand. During long travel days, sightseeing excursions, and even everyday life, this charger is a must-have. Airplane seatback pockets are one of the least sanitary places on a plane, but skipping them also means leaving yourself with limited storage space—until now. If you aren't already traveling with a hanging organizer, consider this your sign to pick one up before your next trip so you can store your devices, beverages, and snacks in a sanitary, neat compartment. The compact hanging pouch simply attaches to the knob of the seatback tray table, and it's made with a slip-resistant design to stay firmly in place throughout the flight. It's machine-washable to keep everything clean and ready for your next vacation, and it's great for kids and adults alike. Staying organized really is the best way to keep your travels as stress-free as possible, and once you pick up a designated pouch to store your charging cables, you'll find your personal item to be much easier to navigate. The Fyy Travel Cable Organizer is made with a water-resistant exterior affixed with a handy carrying strap, while the interior is fitted with several mesh pockets perfectly suited for storing charging cords, portable chargers, headphones, and more. The slim design will hardly take up any space in your bag, plus it'll make everything far more accessible in-flight. A best-seller at Amazon, this $10 pouch is one thing you'll wish you'd been traveling with for years. It's time to do away with airline-issued headphones once and for all—instead, pick up the Twelve South AirFly SE Bluetooth Transmitter before your next flight so you can enjoy in-flight entertainment through the comfort of your own headphones, without cables attached. The compact device plugs into the headphone jack beneath your seatback screen and connects to your Bluetooth headphones with up to 20 hours of charge on a single use. It can connect to up to two devices at once, so you can enjoy a movie with your seatmate, plus it'll do away with excess cords for a tidier travel experience. Whatever you choose to pack as your personal item should be spacious yet compact and easy to keep organized. For this, a backpack is your best bet since it'll keep your hands free while walking through the airport, and this clam-shell Taygeer bag that opens like a suitcase is the roomiest pick. While it's small enough to slide under the seats of most commercial airlines, this bag will provide so much space to store extra clothes and travel essentials, plus it comes with a built-in wet bag and shoe pouch. If you're tired of lugging around a heavy weekender on shorter trips, this backpack is a genius alternative, and right now it's on sale for an impressive 40 percent off. Apple AirTags are one of the most valuable pieces of technology to add to your travel packing list to keep track of checked luggage, but now the Bluetooth tracker can serve another purpose: locating your passport. The Pascacoo AirTag Passport Holder is not only a secure and easy-to-locate place to store your essential travel documents—it also comes with a built-in pocket for your AirTag so you'll always know exactly where it is at all times. The exterior is fitted with RFID-blocking technology to keep your cards and personal information safe from hackers, and it doubles as a wallet with a large pocket for cash and smaller slots for cards. With six colors to choose from, this luxe faux leather passport holder may just become your new favorite travel accessory. When traveling with a personal item and a carry-on, you may find yourself wishing you had the option to eliminate the weight from your shoulder and stack your bags instead. Fortunately, this handy bag bungee does just that—and it's flight attendant-approved. Affixing your smaller bag to the handle of your roller suitcase, this luggage strap will make it easier to navigate through the airport and to your lodgings with your items stacked neatly without risk of the top bag falling off. It's super stretchy to suit luggage of all sizes and ultra-durable, so you don't have to stress about it breaking, either. Tangled necklaces and lost earrings are now a thing of the past because the one item you've been missing in your travel gear collection is a handy jewelry box designed to keep your favorite accessories in place and intact. Currently on sale for 44 percent off, this cleverly designed jewelry organizer is complete with necklace hooks, ring cushions, suede-lined compartments, and even a place to store dainty stud earrings. It zippers shut to keep everything securely tucked away during transit, and it'll take up minimal space in your suitcase thanks to its compact size. Once it's in your collection, you'll wish you'd been traveling with it for years. Love a great deal? Sign up for our T+L Recommends newsletter and we'll send you our favorite travel products each week.

I carry this mini fan everywhere and I'm not sorry about it

It's summer in the city. For sweaty New Yorkers like me, that means one thing: it's officially mini fan season. I can't stand being hot, and summer presents far too many opportunities for that than I care for. A few years ago, I bought myself a rechargeable handheld mini fan that folds into a desktop fan, and it has drastically improved the way I feel about leaving the house in the summer. I love this little fan from Jisulife — it's my responsibility to highly recommend you buy it. Here's why. I take it everywhere. This fan comes with me every time I leave the house in the summer and especially on trips. You can catch me fanning myself on the subway platform, at the park, at the beach, while sitting outside at a restaurant, and pretty much any other place that isn't air-conditioned to a crisp 60 degrees. Everyone asks me about it, and it's so great for kids. Even my husband — an avowed mini fan hater — has conceded that it's pretty nifty, and once even said he wanted one (though he will deny this). I recently hosted my cousins and their three little girls in NYC during 100+ degree days, and the kids were always fighting over control of the fan. It saved us from a few (literal) meltdowns with cranky kids walking in the heat. The fan blades are thin plastic and stop spinning when touched, so there's no worry about hurting little fingers. I love that it folds up. I've looked at other mini fans, but I don't love the bulk of the classic cage fan — and don't even get me started on those wearable neck fans. Plus, I have so much crap in my bag that exposed fan blades are bound to get tangled in my headphones or keychain. The Jisulife fan stores compactly when not in use, and I never have to worry about it accidentally turning on in my bag. You can also use it as a desk fan. The handle folds back so that the fan can sit flat on a surface and provide you with blissfully cool air. I've used it at work, and I always take it with me when I travel to use as a bedside fan in a pinch. That way, I never have to worry about whether the sleeping accommodations will be as frosty as I prefer. It doubles as a flashlight and a phone charger. I'd be content if it only functioned as a fan, but it's pretty great that I can also use it as a portable battery in a pinch. I have yet to find a use for the flashlight feature, though. I've purchased this fan three times now. Not because it's broken or anything, but rather because I've left it in numerous destinations over the years. Still, I think it says something that I've always come back to the same fan when it's time to rebuy.

You can travel smarter with the right tech accessories, and right now, Amazon is packed with top-rated gear at unbeatable prices. While it's true that televisions, tablets, and laptops are hundreds of dollars off for Prime Day, you can give your travel tech gear rotation a facelift for $25 or less. For example, the Apple AirTag—a Travel + Leisure editor favorite—offers a fuss-free way to track your checked luggage at $20. You deserve a mini fan this Prime Day

It's summer in the city, which to me means one thing: it's mini fan season. I can't stand being sweaty, and summer presents far too many opportunities for that than I care for. A few years ago, I bought myself a rechargeable handheld mini fan that folds into a desktop fan, and it has drastically improved the way I feel about leaving the house in the summer. I love this little fan from Jisulife — it's worth every penny of the $20 sticker price, but for Prime Day it's on sale for as low as $13, and it's my responsibility to highly recommend you buy it. You'll find the lowest discount on the pink version, but all the other colorways are on sale, too. I promise you'll thank me for this, but in case you need more convincing, read on for what I love about this fan. For more of the day's best deals, check out our Amazon Prime Day hub. I travel with it too, because I can't trust that every hotel or Airbnb I stay at will be as frosty as I prefer. At night, I stand it up on my bedside table by folding back the handle so I have cool air blowing right on my face all night. The fan blades are foam, so there's no worry about hurting little fingers. It doubles as a flashlight and a phone charger. I'd be content if it only functioned as a fan, but it's pretty great that I can also use it as a portable battery in a pinch. I've purchased this fan three times now. Not because it keeps breaking, but rather because I've left it in numerous destinations over the years. Still, I think it says something that I've always come back to the same fan when it's time to rebuy. Shopping for more discounts today?
