Month-long communicable disease control drive starts July
1 2 Kanpur: The health department is set to launch a one-month special communicable disease control programme across the district from July 1. The campaign will begin from Maqsoodabad. An inter-departmental coordination meeting was convened at the new auditorium, Sarasaiya Ghat, chaired by District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh, to review preparations for the special communicable disease control campaign. All departments were asked to work responsibly to ensure the campaign's success, with 100% completion of work as per the plan. Stress was laid on data feeding and continuous monitoring. Singh expressed displeasure at the absence of the nodal officer from the health education department and ordered that a show cause notice be issued. The district malaria officer was tasked to review the microplan received from ten blocks, including the Municipal Corporation area, and submit a report. Based on last year's data for vector-borne diseases, 36 locations have been deemed sensitive and identified as hot spots. These include Vinayakpur, cantonment, Ambedkar Nagar Kaka deo, Usmanpur, Ompurwa, Kalyanpur North & south, Gandhi Gram, Krishna Nagar, Sarvodya Nagar, Geeta Nagar, Gwaltoli, Jarauli, Tilak Nagar, Panki, Parmat, Nirala Nagar, Nawabganj, world Bank Barra colony, Vishnupru, Nankari, Saraimeeta, Shyam Nagar, Macrober ganj, Barra West, Maharajpur, Bilhour, Bithor, Tikra, Maqsoodabad. The district magistrate directed that anti-larvae medicines be sprayed in these areas as part of the campaign. The concerned Additional Chief Medical Officer, MOIC and City Health Officer are to visit these areas, interact with local citizens, and submit a report by June 30. A Door-to-door Dastak campaign will run alongside from July 11 to July 31. During this period, Asha and Anganwadi workers will visit each household to raise awareness about prevention of mosquito-borne diseases. Simultaneously, a 'Stop Diarrhoea Control Campaign' is scheduled to run for two months. The DM instructed that updates about ongoing work in rural areas be provided to the respective village chiefs to keep them informed and ensure their cooperation. The health department teams will also conduct door-to-door checks for mosquito breeding grounds such as coolers, tyres, pots, and refrigerator trays. Since January, mosquito breeding has been detected in 195 houses, with 73 homes challaned and the remaining warned.

Officials inspect Rath Yatra route, review preparations
1 2 Kanpur: District magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh on Thursday conducted a site inspection to review the preparations for the Jagannath Rath Yatra to be taken out on Friday. The Rath Yatra has been a part of the city's culture for about 250 years, Singh said, adding, "Rath Yatra is not only a symbol of devotion but also a living example of social harmony and cultural unity. " The Rath Yatra will be taken out on Friday at 5pm and will pass through various city localities on its 5.5km route. The DM stated that in view of the large scale of the event and the number of devotees, the preparations for the Rath Yatra were reviewed by the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on June 25 and clear guidelines were given to the concerned departments regarding the same. This tradition was like a cultural bridge between Uttar Pradesh and Orissa, the DM said. The DM said that most of the preparations like cleaning, drinking water, electricity, lighting etc. have been completed and the remaining work will be completed by evening. Singh urged the citizens to participate in the Rath Yatra enthusiastically while maintaining discipline. Additional municipal commissioner, additional district magistrate city, police administration and other officers were present during the inspection. Mayor Pramila Pandey and municipal commissioner Sudhir kumar and other officials also inspected the route of Jagannath Yatra and Muharram on Thursday morning. The mayor first reached Generalganj from where she inspected the traditional Jagannath Rath Yatra route passing through Express Road, Nayaganj, Sirki Mohalla, Chatai Mohalla, Kamala Tower, Dhankutti etc and gave instructions for proper lighting and patchwork. Later, the mayor and the officials inspected the Muharram Tazia procession route in Patkapur Parade and other areas and gave necessary instructions regarding cleanliness. The DM also inspected the Bari Karbala located at Nawabganj in view of the upcoming Muharram procession. During the inspection, he gave instructions to ensure proper arrangements keeping in mind the huge crowd coming to Karbala. He directed the district administration to set up a medical camp in the presence of KESCO and Municipal Corporation officials so that immediate help could be provided in case of any emergency. Besides, he directed the concerned officers to ensure arrangements for additional ambulances, mobile toilets and pure drinking water.

Lekhpal suspended for taking bribe
Kanpur: Taking seriously the complaints received during the Sampoorna Samadhan Diwas organised at Narwal Tehsil last Saturday, district magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh suspended consolidation lekhpal Kamal Kant Maurya with immediate effect. Apprising the DM, Mohd Aslam, settlement officer (Consolidation) said that one Rakesh Prajapati alleged that in lieu of measuring two plots, lekhpal Maurya had taken a bribe of Rs 90,000. The measurement of one plot had already been completed, while an additional demand of Rs 20,000 was being made for the other. Another complainant, Manish Singh Chauhan, alleged that the said lekhpal had demanded Rs 20,000 for registering the inheritance. Taking the cases seriously, the district magistrate had directed the settlement officer (Consolidation) to conduct a proper investigation and ensure prompt action. In the investigation report, it was found that there was no provision for measurement and change of possession of any land before the notification of provisions of section 24 under the Consolidation of Holding Act. Construction firm penalised for slow pace of CETP construction
Kanpur: District magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh took cognisance of the slow construction process of the 20 MLD Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) and ordered immediate realisation of a Rs 30 lakh penalty from the construction company VA Tech Wabag. The DM was reviewing the progress of the CETP with the project manager, secretary JETTA and other departmental officials on Thursday evening. The project manager informed the meeting that during the past 55 days, the construction work of the CETP had been very slow and said that a penalty of Rs 30 lakh had already been imposed earlier. All work should be completed at war level and secretary JETTA has to ensure the realisation of the penalty, Singh said. When the officials said that around 80 tanneries have not made payment on their part, an annoyed DM directed that the list of defaulters be sent to the UP Pollution Control Board headquarters . He reprimanded the company VA Tech Wabag for its negligence in sludge management. The DM further directed the JETTA secretary to prepare a detailed report of the obstacles being faced in CETP operation and send it immediately to the "Namami Gange Project Office" through a letter, to resolve the issues.

After standoff with DM, Kanpur chief medical officer suspended
Following a high-profile bureaucratic standoff, the state government has suspended Kanpur's chief medical officer (CMO) Dr Hari Dutt Nemi who was embroiled in months of tension with district magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh. The suspension order also attaches Dr Nemi to the state headquarters and initiates a departmental inquiry into alleged irregularities in the appointment of doctors, as well as procedural and administrative lapses. Dr Nemi has said he will challenge his suspension in court. Dr Udaynath, additional CMO from Shravasti, has been appointed as the new Kanpur CMO. The administrative action comes a day after Hindustan Times prominently featured the controversy. The state government has cited three key grounds for Dr Nemi's suspension: failure to publish recruitment notices on the National Health Mission's website, delay in releasing interview results despite specific directives, and relieving a senior finance officer from statutory responsibilities in violation of protocol. After his suspension, Dr Nemi sent a letter to chief minister Yogi Adityanath and held a press conference. During the press conference, he alleged caste-based discrimination and extortion demands by the district magistrate. He claimed that the DM was angered when he refused to reverse the transfer of Dr Subodh Prakash Yadav—an ACMO accused of corruption and political bias—and that he was repeatedly humiliated for being a Dalit. 'The DM told me I lacked intelligence, could not understand the system, and didn't know how to earn money,' Dr Nemi alleged during the press conference. Reacting to Dr Nemi's allegations, district magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh said that publicly criticising an official suspension order and levelling baseless allegations against fellow officers amounts to gross indiscipline. He also said all relevant facts have been communicated to the competent authority and that appropriate action will be taken in accordance with procedure. The tensions reportedly began on February 5, 2025, when the DM conducted a surprise inspection at the CMO's office and found 34 employees absent, prompting a public reprimand and salary deductions. Since then, administrative hostilities intensified, with mutual accusations of insubordination and corruption. One of the most serious allegations levelled by Dr Nemi is that the DM pressured him to clear a payment of over ₹1.6 crore to JM Pharma—a firm reportedly chargesheeted by the CBI. The CMO claimed to have resisted the order, citing a 125-page departmental report and a warning letter issued by the senior finance officer. The controversy soon spiralled. While a section of BJP MLAs from Kanpur had reportedly expressed support for Dr Nemi, others wrote to the chief minister demanding his immediate removal on grounds of alleged irregularities and insubordination. Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav had also publicly taken a jibe over the issue. Audio recordings purportedly featuring Dr Nemi and his driver had also surfaced. In one clip, Dr Nemi was heard criticising the DM in strong language.
