ALOR SETAR, July 13 — Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) has approved an allocation of RM1.15 million to completely repair the Kubang Pasu MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) in Jitra this year. Its chairman, Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said, RM800,000 was allocated for the upgrade of equipment for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning, and that repairs would include upgrades to furniture in the academic block, waterproofing, courtyards, walkways and recreational areas as well as sports courts. 'RM180,000 is allocated for maintenance of the dormitories and student facilities, ceilings, toilets, closets, water tanks, food court and pest control as well as a UPS Server system costing RM50,000. 'Also, RM70,000 is allocated for electrical maintenance and basic amenities and RM50,000 for the maintenance of teachers' quarters,' he posted on Facebook yesterday. He said he had visited Kubang Pasu MRSM today and ensured immediate action would be taken after receiving a lot of social media comments from parents urging him to visit the junior college, as well as feedback on the lack of electricity supply and damaged facilities in the dormitories. He stressed that the junior college management should expedite the repairs for the comfort of students and teachers, adding that MARA's senior management would continue to monitor to ensure all approved projects would truly benefit the Kubang Pasu MRSM's students and staff. — Bernama

Temporary warning poles to be installed at Kedah's Sungai Korok after fatal plunge kills six

ALOR SETAR, July 9 — Temporary warning poles will be installed along Jalan Sungai Korok in Jitra as an immediate safety measure, ahead of more permanent infrastructure improvements such as guardrails and other road safety features that require budget approval. Kedah Public Works, Natural Resources, Water Supply, Water Resources and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Mohammad Yusof Zakaria said the measure is part of several proposals submitted by the Public Works Department (JKR) to enhance road safety in the area. 'Yesterday, we visited the site where six family members tragically lost their lives after their vehicle is believed to have veered off the road and plunged into the river. We are reviewing possible improvements to safety infrastructure in the area. 'As an initial step, temporary warning poles will be installed today to alert motorists,' he told Bernama. He added that JKR's recommendations include the construction of guardrails, installation of street lighting, reflective road studs, directional signage, warning boards, flashing lights, and clearer road markings. He noted that these enhancements are proposed for several identified high-risk areas along the road, subject to the availability of funds. Mohammad Yusof also expressed appreciation to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who announced that the federal government will consider proposals to install guardrails and street lighting along the stretch. On Saturday, a couple — Mohamad Azim Izat Ishak, 32, and Nurul Hidayah Khadijah Razman Efendi, 31 — along with their four children, Putra Rayyan Nur Izzat, 9, Hawa Adriana Nur Izzat, 8, Annayla Humaira Nur Izzat, 7, and Tuah Haydar, six months, were reported missing after leaving a relative's home in Taman Sri Aman, Jitra, around 5.30am. The tragedy unfolded when all six were later found dead inside a vehicle submerged in Sungai Korok, near Kampung Kemboja, early Monday morning. — Bernama

Putri Qisya, 12, vows to stay strong after losing parents, four siblings in Sungai Korok tragedy

JERLUN, July 9 — The eldest child of the couple who drowned in Sungai Korok, Jitra on Monday, 12-year-old Putri Qisya Nur Izzat, is determined to stay strong and move forward with her life. She said athough she felt immense grief over the loss of both her parents and four younger siblings, she is grateful for the support and encouragement she has received. 'Many teachers and ustazah came and gave me words of encouragement. They also advised me to always pray for my umi (mother) and walid (father),' she said when met by reporters at her grandmother's home in Kampung Bohor Karang here yesterday. Putri Qisya's parents, Mohamad Azim Izat Ishak, 32, and Nurul Hidayah Khadijah Razman Efendi, 31, were found drowned with their four children, Putra Rayyan Nur Izzat, 9; Hawa Adriana Nur Izzat, 8; Annayla Humaira Nur Izzat, 7; and Tuah Haydar, six months, on Monday. The family's car is believed to have veered off the road and plunged into the Sungai Korok early Saturday morning before it was discovered yesterday morning. Putri Qisya survived because she was at her grandmother's house at the time of the incident. Meanwhile, her grandmother, Roswati Zainol, 52, said her granddaughter is trying to stay strong in facing the tragedy. 'Qisya seemed strong yesterday, but today she looks downcast. I told her to let her emotions out because I'm worried she might fall sick if she keeps everything bottled up,' she said. When asked about who would care for Putri Qisya, Roswati said she would let her granddaughter decide when she is ready. 'I'm not forcing her to choose. She can follow her heart and stay with whoever she feels comfortable with. If she wants to stay with 'Tok Umi', that's fine; if she chooses to stay with her aunt, that's okay too,' she said. Meanwhile, Roswati's home continued to receive visits from various parties today offering support and aid to Putri Qisya, including Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. During the visit, Ahmad Zahid announced that Putri Qisya would be adopted by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) to help with her education until she reaches university level. — Bernama

Malaysian girl recalls father's dream message before 6 bodies found in submerged car

The sole surviving member of a family of seven who drowned when their car plunged into a river in Kedah last week has recalled seeing her father in a dream, telling her not to be sad, in a tragedy that has gripped Malaysia. Putri Qisya Nur Izzat, 12, had stayed behind at her grandmother's house on the day of the accident. She recounted on Monday dreaming of her father, 32-year-old Mohamad Azim Izat Ishak, who told her he could only watch over her from afar. 'Dad said, don't be sad or I won't be at peace,' she told reporters. 'When I woke up, I found out they had found the vehicle and everyone was gone.' Putri Qisya's six family members, including her nine-month-old baby brother, were returning home on Friday when they were reported missing the next morning. Their sedan was discovered on Monday submerged in the seven-metre-deep (22 feet) Korok River in Jitra district, just a metre from the riverbank. Ahmad Aminuddin Abd Rahim, a senior fire and rescue officer, said authorities received calls from the public who spotted the car floating in the river on Monday. Rescuers had to break the vehicle's windows and cut open the roof to retrieve the bodies, all found packed in the back seat, indicating the family could have been trying to escape through the rear window. Speaking stoically in front of press cameras at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar, Putri Qisya also recalled her mother, 31-year-old Nurul Hidayah Khadijah Razman Efendi, once giving her the same advice – to be strong as the eldest child so her siblings would not feel sad seeing her sorrow.
