Tanker overturns in Cape Winelands, rain hampers recovery efforts
A tanker carrying nitric acid has overturned outside Wellington, and heavy rain is hampering recovery efforts.
Cape Winelands District Municipality spokesperson Jo-Anne Otto said fire services officials responded to the incident in Rooshoek Road, outside Wellington.
'A tanker truck left the gravel road and overturned late last night. Fortunately, the tanker has remained intact, and all diesel has been contained. No injuries were reported,' she said.
Nitric acid could react explosively with diesel fuel.
The road is likely to remain closed for a few hours as the weather hampers recovery efforts, according to Otto.
'Learners attending Groenberg Primary School will have access to the grounds. Motorists can make use of the alternative route via Hermon Road. Services are doing their best to work as swiftly as possible,' she added.
A cut-off low weather system brought heavy rain, wind, and cold temperatures across the Western Cape, causing chaos on Wednesday.
