AFL world praises Joel Selwood for ‘brave' act as footy great returns after death of his brothers
The AFL world has showered Geelong legend Joel Selwood with praise as the 37-year-old made his return to the commentary box on Sunday. Selwood has been on a break from his media commitments after the sudden death of his brother Adam in May, aged 41. FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Join now and get your first month for just $1. His death came just three months after his twin brother Troy took his own life. The surviving Selwood brothers – Joel and Scott – were understandably left devastated by the loss, and Joel decided to take a break from his media obligations. Scott also took a short break from his role at Collingwood, but returned to his duties last month. And earlier this week it was revealed that Selwood would return for Sunday's clash between St Kilda and Melbourne, much to the delight of fans. 'Great to see you back doing what you love,' one fan wrote on Facebook in response to the news. 'Great to see Joel returning we have missed you Joel,' another said. 'So brave, welcome back! Love and prayers for you and your family love you Joel,' a third added. While a fourth wrote on X during the first quarter: 'Good to hear Joel Selwood in Comms again this afternoon. Lots of love on your return.' Joel Selwood's touching tributes to twin brothers Following the death of Adam, Joel wrote a touching tribute message on social media. 'Rest up, love you brother. Look after each other'. It came after his heartfelt speech at Troy's speech in February. 'He was dealt some pretty tough cards over his lifetime. Some he found a way to deal with, but sadly, there were others, no matter how hard he tried, he could never fully control – and he did try,' Joel said. 'He tried so hard. He put up a hell of a fight for mum and dad, for his kids, for his brothers, for his friends and for others who are fighting the same fight, just as he was. 'He fought for all of us. 'He wanted to keep fighting, as he always did in life, but in the end, he simply couldn't lift his arms to throw another punch back. He'll be missed by so many.'

Footy legend Joel Selwood takes a brave step after losing two of his AFL star brothers in twin tragedies
Former Geelong AFL star Joel Selwood will return to work in commentary this weekend after taking time off when his brother Adam's tragic death shook the footy world to its core. The AFL community was left reeling after the suicide of the former Eagles premiership star on May 17, just three months after the tragic suicide of his identical twin brother, Troy. Joel was devastated by the double tragedy, later posting a social media tribute to Adam saying alongside photos of the family and the words: 'Rest up, love you brother. Look after each other.' Joel has been on leave since the shocking incident, but will be back with the Channel Seven commentary team on Sunday for St Kilda's clash with Melbourne at Marvel Stadium. The Selwoods are widely regarded as one of the most celebrated families in the sport with brothers Joel, Adam, Troy and Scott, each enjoying distinguished footy careers. Troy played 75 games for the Brisbane Lions between 2003 and 2010, before becoming an assistant coach with Geelong. Throughout his career, the Lions tagger never took a backward step. He was courageous, showed an elite footballing intelligence and competed for every challenge that presented itself. Off the field, he was seen by many as an outstanding individual, who was compassionate, kind and loved the game. Adam made 187 appearances for the Eagles during his career and played a key role in helping the club win the 2006 AFL Grand Final. He joined the footy club in the 2002 National Draft and would enjoy a 10-year career in footy's top-flight competition, mostly playing as a tagger, before hanging up his boots in 2013. Adam had led the tributes for his twin brother Troy, at his memorial service at Geelong's GMHBA stadium earlier this year. Adam described his brother as 'full of life, full of love, full of wisdom beyond his years.' 'Having an identical twin is a both a rare privilege and wonderfully complex,' he said. 'A twin is more than a sibling. They are a constant presence, a built-in mate. 'He was my mirror, my fiercest competitor, my greatest ally and the one person who knew what I was always thinking.' After his retirement in 2013, Adam would continue to work in football taking up a role as a development coach with the West Coast. He'd later become the inaugural head of the Eagles women's footy side and was pivotal in bringing key AFLW players to the club.

Scott Selwood runs solo marathon for charity to continue legacy of late brother Adam
Former AFL star Scott Selwood completed a grueling solo marathon in Melbourne on Saturday to continue the legacy of his late brother, Adam. Selwood, now assistant coach of Collingwood, had been planning to run in South Africa 's Big Five Marathon but was forced to pull out due to the tragic death of Adam in May. Adam's death at the age of 41 came just three months after his identical twin and fellow former AFL player Troy Selwood died. Scott's commitment to the cause remained, with him completing 42.2km around Albert Park on Saturday - raising money for Carrie Bickmore 's Beanies 4 Brain Cancer in the process. 'You would have been forgiven if you weren't up for it today brother,' Joel Selwood posted to social media, praising his brother. 'But instead you did it the hardest way possible — underprepared, freezing cold and ran alone against the clock. '42.2km and smashed it. Proud of you Uncle Scooter.' Scott, who has been rocked by the recent tragedy, managed to run the distance in three hours and two minutes. 'Not Africa but the importance to the cause stays the same!' Scott posted to social media. 'I learnt some very hard lessons about being underprepared for a marathon also! So did my toenails! 'To everyone who has donated.. a very big THANK YOU. This is an incredible cause and with incredible people. 'It wasn't mean to be for me in Africa but that's when you're lucky to have great people to step in and support (like) Isaac Smith. Good luck team!' Scott was referring to former AFL star Isaac Smith who stepped up and ran the South African marathon in his stead. Aussie Nedd Brockmann won the event in 3.15.31, with Smith finishing in 5.33.22. Smith, who has a newborn at home, said stepping up to run the race was a no-brainer for him. 'There wasn't really a question because they've done so many amazing things for so many people,' he said. 'They're a beautiful family and I'll do anything to help them out.' Before his death, Adam Selwood was meant to run a half-marathon to honour his brother Troy. He hoped to raise $10,000 for WA charity zero2hero, which supports mental health leadership and suicide prevention. A group of Adam's friends – including West Coast teammates – finished what he started by running the race.

'I love you boys, you are magic right now,' Brit captioned a series of candid photos and videos featuring her children smiling and playing. The post quickly attracted an outpouring of support from friends, fans and fellow WAGS. Rebecca Judd, Lana Wilkinson and Brooke Warne were among the stars who flooded the comments with love heart emojis and heartfelt messages. 'Children get us through the toughest of times. Sending so much love to your family,' wrote one follower. Another added: 'Hold them tight honey so much love to you and your family xx.' A third said simply: 'Thinking of you and your family Brit. Xx' A forth commented: 'Sending so much love', while others praised the 'unconditional love' that children bring during moments of despair. The Selwood family has been rocked by a string of tragedies, beginning with the devastating death of Joel's twin brother Troy Selwood, who died by suicide at the age of 40 on February 4 at a property in Geelong. Just three months later, the heartbreak deepened with the passing of Troy's identical twin, Adam Selwood, who died in Perth on May 17 at the age of 41. Adam was a former premiership player for the West Coast Eagles and much-loved figure in the AFL community. As the family attempted to come to terms with their unimaginable grief, Brit shared another sorrowful update just weeks later - the passing of her beloved grandmother. 'Rest peacefully Grandma. You were a great grandma,' she wrote in a simple but emotional tribute. Police have confirmed Adam's death, which came just three months after his twin Troy passed away, is not being treated as suspicious. Joel, a Geelong premiership captain, took to Instagram following the tragedy to publish a series of pictures of himself and Adam and his other brother Scott. He captioned the post: 'Rest up, love you brother. Look after each other.' Last month, the footy great celebrated his 37th birthday - and his wife marked the occasion with a simple post on social media. Brit posted a black and white photo of the family alongside the caption: 'Happy Birthday @joelselwood14. We love you.' Adam passed away a week before he was supposed to take part in HBF Run for a Reason, raising funds for mental health charity zero2hero in memory of Troy. A group of his closest friends decided to finish what he had started and complete the race. The group running included former players Drew Banfield and Quinten Lynch, as well as current stars Brad Dalziell, Travis Gasper, Sharrod Wellingham and Matt Rosa. The Eagles star had raised more than $21,000 at the time of his death, but that number has risen to more than $76,000 on Sunday. Adam made 187 appearances for the Eagles during his career and played a key role in helping the club win the 2006 AFL Grand Final. He joined the footy club in the 2002 National Draft and would enjoy a 10-year career in footy's top-flight competition. Adam mostly played as a tagger before hanging up his boots in 2013. After his retirement in 2013, Adam would continue to work in football taking up a role as a development coach with the West Coast. He'd later become the inaugural head of the Eagles women's footy side and was pivotal in bringing key AFLW players to the club.
