PFF shares bold take on Steelers' best offseason move

The Steelers completely overhauled their secondary in 2025 — and one major sports outlet has taken notice. Over the past five months, Pittsburgh signed six-time Pro Bowl CB Darius Slay and traded for three-time All-Pro CB Jalen Ramsey to pair with underrated lockdown CB Joey Porter Jr. — acquisitions that Pro Football Focus believes were the Steelers' best offseason decisions. Advertisement "Most of the Steelers' defense played at a high level last season," PFF's Dalton Wasserman wrote. "The lone exception was a cornerback unit that ranked 30th in the NFL in PFF coverage grade. They did well to fix that, acquiring a couple of outstanding veterans. Former Eagle Darius Slay earned a 75.5 PFF coverage grade that ranked 16th in the NFL last season. Recent trade acquisition Jalen Ramsey recorded the 11th-best PFF overall grade among qualified cornerbacks in his final season in Miami. If both of these moves pan out, the Steelers could have the best defense in the NFL this season." Following the blockbuster Ramsey trade, one of our takeaways at Steelers Wire mirrored PFF's high hopes for Pittsburgh's defense — which could realistically become one of the best units in 2025. Steelers fans will get their first glimpse at the retooled secondary when training camp action kicks off in Latrobe on July 24. Ray Fittipaldo says Joey Porter Jr.'s development caused one Steelers coaching change

Joey Porter Jr. has had an up-and-down first two years in the NFL — and according to insider Ray Fittipaldo, ex-Steelers DB coach Grady Brown may be at fault. On a recent episode of 93.7 The Fan, Fittipaldo connected Porter's development issues to Brown losing his job in Pittsburgh: Advertisement "[Steelers DB coach Gerald Alexander] said he thinks [Joey]'s elite at the line of scrimmage, in terms of disrupting, but it's everything that happens after that where Joey still struggles. Like, your transition to your coverage, then once you're close to your guy — don't put your hands on him, and then be more opportunistic when the ball's in the air. He's been kind of behind the eight ball in all three of those things. "That's Gerald's job. That's why Grady Brown is no longer here. Joey Porter has not developed the way they hoped he thought he would as a No. 32 overall pick in that draft." The Steelers hired Alexander in February to serve as the new defensive backs coach, while Brown was picked up by the Saints to serve as their new cornerbacks coach. Porter could be in for a major breakout in 2025 alongside newly signed CB Darius Slay Jr., who's taken the third-year Steelers corner under his wing this offseason. 3 Steelers named to Bengals WR Ja'Marr Chase's top NFL cornerbacks list

The AFC North might host some of the fiercest rivalries in the NFL — but that hasn't stopped Bengals All-Pro WR Ja'Marr Chase from paying respect to the revamped Steelers secondary. Chase recently appeared on the July 11 edition of The Sitdown w/ Malik Wright, and was asked to create a top cornerback list. Browns CB Denzel Ward — who made his fourth Pro Bowl last season — was his first selection, but three Steelers rounded out the remaining spots. Advertisement "Joey Porter [Jr.'s] pretty smooth,' Chase said. 'He's just long. … It's gonna be fun going against [Jalen] Ramsey and Darius Slay. I had an opportunity to go against [Slay] this last year and [Ramsey] my rookie year. That's four. I'm gonna go with four.' After winning Super Bowl LIX with the Eagles, Slay signed with the Steelers this past offseason — while Ramsey was part of a blockbuster trade to Pittsburgh from Miami just a few weeks ago Chase knows what the majority of the NFL and Steelers fans already know — the 2025 Pittsburgh secondary is loaded. Taking a closer look at the fiercest cornerback trio in the league, Porter is one of the most underrated lockdown corners in the NFL, and there are thirteen Pro Bowls and four All-Pro selections between Ramsey and Slay. The new Steelers cornerback trio will first meet Chase and the rest of the Bengals offense when they head to Cincinnati on Thursday Night Football in Week 7. Insider reveals how Steelers plan to replace Minkah Fitzpatrick post-Jalen Ramsey trade

Trading away Minkah Fitzpatrick left a void in the Steelers secondary — one that insider Gerry Dulac believes Pittsburgh has already filled. Hours after the blockbuster trade, Dulac took to social media to reveal how the Steelers will fill the vacancy left by Fitzpatrick's departure — and CB Jalen Ramsey's versatility will play a huge role: Advertisement "How will Steelers replace Minkah? Their new defensive plan will include Jalen Ramsey, Darius Slay, and Joey Porter Jr. on the field all the time, with few exceptions, per sources." Predicting how the Steelers will use their trio of talented DBs 'all the time' seems simple on paper. If opposing offenses are running a three-receiver set, Ramsey will slide into the slot, while Slay and Porter play outside. If offenses roll out a heavy package, Slay and Porter will stay outside, while Ramsey will move up to free safety. Trading away Fitzpatrick shocked the Steel City faithful, but whether the Steelers can replace him with their in-house strategy — or with a veteran free agent — remains to be seen. Steelers CB Jalen Ramsey revealed what jersey number he'll wear in Pittsburgh

Roll out the red carpet, Pittsburgh — former Dolphins superstar CB Jalen Ramsey has arrived! The Steelers shocked the NFL world with their blockbuster acquisition on Monday — and it didn't take long for Ramsey to reveal what number he'd wear in Pittsburgh: No. 5. Ramsey wore No. 20 with the Jaguars and Rams, but switched to No. 5 when the new NFL jersey rule came into effect in 2021 — which allowed more positions to wear single-digit numbers. Advertisement The Steelers will lean on Ramsey, Darius Slay Jr., and Joey Porter Jr. to carry the Black and Gold secondary — a trio of talented defensive backs that will definitely have their hands full in a competitive AFC North environment.
