PFF shares bold take on Steelers' best offseason move
The Steelers completely overhauled their secondary in 2025 — and one major sports outlet has taken notice. Over the past five months, Pittsburgh signed six-time Pro Bowl CB Darius Slay and traded for three-time All-Pro CB Jalen Ramsey to pair with underrated lockdown CB Joey Porter Jr. — acquisitions that Pro Football Focus believes were the Steelers' best offseason decisions. Advertisement "Most of the Steelers' defense played at a high level last season," PFF's Dalton Wasserman wrote. "The lone exception was a cornerback unit that ranked 30th in the NFL in PFF coverage grade. They did well to fix that, acquiring a couple of outstanding veterans. Ray Fittipaldo says Joey Porter Jr.'s development caused one Steelers coaching change
Joey Porter Jr. has had an up-and-down first two years in the NFL — and according to insider Ray Fittipaldo, ex-Steelers DB coach Grady Brown may be at fault. On a recent episode of 93.7 The Fan, Fittipaldo connected Porter's development issues to Brown losing his job in Pittsburgh: Advertisement "[Steelers DB coach Gerald Alexander] said he thinks [Joey]'s elite at the line of scrimmage, in terms of disrupting, but it's everything that happens after that where Joey still struggles. Like, your transition to your coverage, then once you're close to your guy — don't put your hands on him, and then be more opportunistic when the ball's in the air. He's been kind of behind the eight ball in all three of those things. "That's Gerald's job. That's why Grady Brown is no longer here. Joey Porter has not developed the way they hoped he thought he would as a No. 32 overall pick in that draft." The Steelers hired Alexander in February to serve as the new defensive backs coach, while Brown was picked up by the Saints to serve as their new cornerbacks coach. The AFC North might host some of the fiercest rivalries in the NFL — but that hasn't stopped Bengals All-Pro WR Ja'Marr Chase from paying respect to the revamped Steelers secondary. Chase recently appeared on the July 11 edition of The Sitdown w/ Malik Wright, and was asked to create a top cornerback list. Browns CB Denzel Ward — who made his fourth Pro Bowl last season — was his first selection, but three Steelers rounded out the remaining spots.
