Will Be "Trying To Hit India Hard": England Captain Ben Stokes' Massive Warning Ahead Of Lord's Test
With the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy perfectly poised at 1-1 heading into the third match of the series at the mecca of cricket, the Lord's, England skipper Ben Stokes claimed his side will be aiming to hit India hard in the five-day Test that begins on July 10. Stokes admitted that, given the standard of quality the two teams possess, he expected the series to be a balanced encounter with both sides facing ups and downs. "This was always going to be a series (in) which moments ebb and flow, the results were going to ebb and flow because there are two very good teams going at each other. "We came out on top at Headingley, and they came out on top in the last game. When you have two good sides going at it against each other, you are going to see that. I don't think we feel like we have the edge over anyone. We respect our opposition, whoever that may be. We'll be coming out this week, trying to hit them hard and obviously trying to come away with a win," said Stokes in the pre-game conference. England made history by completing the second-highest run chase on English soil in Test cricket as they chased down 371 with five wickets to spare at Headingley in the first Test. India returned the favour by winning their first-ever Test at Edgbaston in the second Test on the back of inspiring batting by Shubman Gill. Earlier on Wednesday, England announced the playing XI for the Lord's Test. Sussex fast bowler Jofra Archer replaces Josh Tongue for the third game of the five-Test series, starting on Thursday, July 10. Archer has played 13 Tests for England and picked 42 wickets at an average of 31.04. He has made a return to the England Test set-up for the first time since February 2021. Stokes acknowledged it was pretty exciting to have the quick back in the team and at his disposal. "Really exciting. I think it's great for English fans, but also for Jof. It's been a long time coming for him. The way in which he's handled injury setbacks over that period it's been very commendable, and the way in which he's gotten himself back onto the field and playing cricket over a long period of time now, it's exciting to have him back. "I think Jof's going to be pretty proud of himself that he's managed to get himself back here after two pretty big injury scares," added Stokes.

Archer makes hotly-anticipated return to England team for third test v India
England's Jofra Archer has been named in the team to face India in the third test of the series at Lord's, England's cricket board (ECB) announced on Wednesday, as the fast bowler prepares for his first test in more than four years. Archer will replace fellow seamer Josh Tongue, the only change England have made, for the third test that starts on Thursday. Tongue picked up only four wickets and conceded more than 200 runs in the two innings. Archer has not played in the longest format since England faced India in Ahmedabad in February 2021. The 30-year-old has taken 42 wickets in 13 tests and although he was added to the squad for the second test, he was not included in the team. However, England coach Brendon McCullum said Archer was in the frame for the third test after putting his fitness woes behind him. A series of physical problems kept delaying his return to red-ball cricket, including elbow injuries, back issues and a thumb injury. "Really exciting, it's great for English fans, but also for Jof. It's been a long time coming for him. I think the way in which he's handled the injury setbacks over that period has been very commendable," England skipper Ben Stokes told reporters. "And then the way in which he's got himself back onto the field and playing cricket over a long period of time now. It was exciting to have him back in the squad and in contention for last week, but now we can say he's in the playing 11. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Stokes had also said they would consider fresh legs with such a quick turnaround time between the second and third test, especially after England's bowlers bowled 234 overs in the second test that India won by 336 runs. England struggled to take wickets against India, who scored more than 1,000 runs in a test match for the first time in history in the second match and the hosts will hope Archer's pace can be a lethal weapon at Lord's. England will also be wary of India's record at Lord's, where they have more wins (three) than any other venue in England. The series is tied at 1-1 after England won the first test at Headingley before India won a test for the first time at Edgbaston on Sunday. Same again for England as Jofra Archer misses training due to family emergency
The 30-year-old is expected to rejoin the squad on Tuesday in preparation for the second Test at Edgbaston as England look to strengthen their grip on the five-match series, but captain Ben Stokes will be leading an Archer-less side into battle. Archer was called up to England's squad after the side secured a thrilling five-wicket victory in the series opener at Headingley last week. Jofra Archer is 𝑩𝑨𝑪𝑲 🔥 Our squad to take on India in the second Test has just dropped 📋👇 — England Cricket (@englandcricket) June 26, 2025 Archer has not played Test cricket since February 2021 and played his first red-ball match after four years in Sussex's County Championship draw against Durham at Chester-le-Street last week. Whenever his Test return comes, fellow England bowler Chris Woakes is excited to have Archer back around the team and believes his best days are still ahead of him. He said: 'Brilliant for Jof, brilliant for us as a team. It is a big boost to have him back. 'When Jof is around he adds a lot to the group, not only as a player but as a person and as a character. He's obviously had a tough journey over the last few years with his injuries and it's credit to him the hard work he's put in to be back in this position to be able to hopefully play Test cricket again. 'More delighted for him than us really because I know how hard it is to go through long spells of injuries. We haven't had the lay offs he's had but even just a niggle here and there it can be hard mentally, so full credit to him and the opportunity to play for England again. 'His best is probably still ahead of him. I'm sure he's chomping at the bit to get back out there and show people what he has already done in the whites. 'We all know how good he can be but he's at an age where his best is still ahead of him, which is exiting for him and us. 'Hopefully when he does get back out there it will be great to have him back and great for the fans.' England will look to take a 2-0 series lead over India with victory this week but the side have had a mixed bag of results at the venue over the last five years. A defeat by New Zealand in 2021 along with a pair of Ashes losses in 2019 and 2023 show it could be tough work for England. But Woakes, who was born in Birmingham and plays his domestic cricket for Warwickshire, is excited to play in front of his home crowd. He added: 'Whenever I come here for an international it's got that extra buzz and a real good feeling turning up at your home crowd and being part of a big series, it's exciting. 'We get great support here. The Hollies (stand) will be rocking and there will be a lot of Indian fans here as well so it makes for a great atmosphere for both teams. I'm glad to be a part of it.' James Anderson and Stuart Broad's retirements mean Woakes is now a more senior figure in the England bowling attack and the 36-year-old is enjoying his role as one of the most experienced members of the group. 'I'm enjoying it and I played a lot of my England games with Jimmy and Broady so it is different not having them around but also it's a great opportunity for myself,' he said. 'I've enjoyed that role so far and it's good to pass on some knowledge to the younger guys that haven't played as much Test cricket. 'I'm still in that position where I'm trying to get better and improve every time I go out there. People like to talk about age a lot but it is just a number. If I feel like I'm performing well, I'll carry on.'
