Askey still aiming to strengthen Truro City squad
Truro City manager John Askey says he is still looking to strengthen his side ahead of their first season in the National League. The Tinners have already brought in a number of new players such as Harry Kite, Lirak Hasani and Max Kinsey, while Luke Jephcott has moved on a permanent deal after being on loan at Truro last season. City begin their first-ever campaign in the fifth tier at Wealdstone on Saturday, 9 August after winning National League South last season. "We still need another goalkeeper along with Lavs (Dan Lavercombe), we need another centre-back, another centre-forward and probably a couple of lads who can play in different positions," Askey told BBC Sport. "We're only a small squad and if we want to compete then we need to bring in one or two more experienced players." Askey is hoping he can strengthen his side before the start of the season. But he says he understands that he may have to wait until later in the summer transfer window for the right players to become available as other clubs make decisions on their squads. "We're pretty close on one player, he's just got past his medical," he added. "Then what you find at smaller clubs is you have to wait until you get towards the start of the season and you'll pick up probably better players than what you would at the start of pre-season. "Truro is not going to be players' first choices, so we have to wait and then when lads feel as though they've got something at an elite club, then all of a sudden the contract gets taken away or they're not taken on, then hopefully we can step in and pick up one or two bargains." Truro City boss ready for 'hard work' after promotion
Truro City manager John Askey says he is ready for the "hard work" to begin after his side's promotion to the National National League South champions enjoyed an open-top bus parade around Truro on Saturday to celebrate their guided the club to promotion in his first season in charge, the experienced Askey is planning for a season in the fifth tier with logistical issues a priority. "I could never have envisaged when I started that we were going to do this," Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall."But it'll sink in next week when we have to start finding out where we're going to train."We've got to get new players in and work out how are we going to travel to away games; that's when the hard work starts."Truro will face the longest away trip in English football next season when they go to Gateshead - a round-trip of around 930 will also face an 880-mile round trip to Carlisle United and a similar journey to Hartlepool United and Askey is hopeful that his experience - he led Macclesfield Town to a National League title and York City to promotion from National League North - can help Truro stay up in the fifth tier."Every team that is in the league above, I've either played against when I was a player or have managed against, so I know what to expect," he added."It's a big jump from the National League South to National League, but hopefully the players can do what they have done this season and do what nobody expects, and that is for us to stay in the National League next season and build."
