Wreck of the SS Stolwijk: 10 crew members lost off the Donegal coast in 1940

In December 1940, the SS Stolwijk, a Dutch cargo ship, was wrecked off the coast of Co Donegal in hurricane-force winds. The ship's rudder was damaged in the storm on its journey from the Dominion of Newfoundland to Liverpool, England. Advertisement Attempts to rescue the ship by its destroyer failed, and it went on the rocks off Tory Island, Co Donegal. 10 crew members were lost, but the remaining 18 were rescued by the crew of the Arranmore lifeboat. Monuments and plaques remembering the bravery of the lifeboat crew are scattered around Arranmore island. Shortly before it struck the rock, a large wave washed the ship's radio officer, Paulus Vierkant, from the deck. He was the first to die. Another nine died when they jumped into the water and swam to a ship's lifeboat that had been washed overboard. The lifeboat was swept away. Advertisement The other 18 stayed on board until they were rescued. The rescue of the survivors was conducted in terrible weather conditions and both the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands awarded medals to the lifeboat crew. A Gold Medal was awarded to coxswain John Boyle, a Silver Medal was awarded to motor mechanic Teague Ward and Bronze Medals were awarded to crew members Philip Boyle, Philip Byrne, Neil Byrne, Bryan Gallagher, Patrick O'Donnell, and Joseph Rogers. The RNLI said this was a rescue of great daring, gallantry and endurance carried out in weather of "exceptional severity". Advertisement Each medal was accompanied by a copy of the decree making the award, in which Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands said the medal had been awarded for 'exceptionally outstanding courage, unselfishness and devotion to duty'. The owners of the Stolwijk, the Netherlands Shipping and Trading Co, gave £20 to be divided among the crew. The three bodies recovered following the tragedy were originally buried in the Church of Ireland graveyard in Killult, Donegal. In October 2000, the bodies were exhumed and re-interred at the National Cemetery of Honours in Loenen, Netherlands. In 2015, Jerry Early, a native of Arranmore and the last eye witness on the island to remember the day, released a song called 'I'll Go' to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the wreck and rescue.

The latest research by property firm Rettie shows that there were 514 sales of high-end homes in 2024, versus 506 transactions in 2023. Gloucester Place lies within EH3 Edinburgh. The east of Scotland, including Edinburgh, accounted for about 80 per cent of £1m-plus sales during 2024. EH4, encompassing Barnton, Cramond and Cammo, saw a significant rise with sales increasing by nearly 50 per cent, to 49. Other key Edinburgh postcodes - EH10, EH9 and EH12 - round out the top five, accounting for more than 40 per cent of sales. Postcodes outside Edinburgh that make up the top ten include KY16 (St Andrews) and G61 (Bearsden). Simon Rettie, managing director, Rettie, said: 'Scotland's prime residential market continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience, with 2024 marking a record-breaking year for £1m-plus home sales. While Edinburgh and the east remain dominant, it's encouraging to see continued activity emerging in the west. 'Buyers are showing confidence again - a trend we expect to build through 2025,' he added. Northumberland Street in Edinburgh's New town. The uptick, according to the firm, reflects improved affordability as mortgage rates stabilise and buyer sentiment recovers. Property experts say this is also an indicator of future growth at the top end - as values appreciate and more homes move into the £1m-plus bracket. John Boyle, director of research and strategy at Rettie, said: 'The Scottish £1m-plus market has weathered recent economic headwinds and emerged with renewed strength, culminating in a record number of sales in 2024. Edinburgh continues to lead the way, underpinned by its established prime districts and resilient buyer demand, while the wider east of Scotland market has consolidated its position as the engine of high-value transactions. 'The overall Scottish residential market modestly improved through 2024 and into this year after a tumultuous 18 months in late 2022 and 2023, when the cost of living crisis and the infamous UK mini Budget saw it caught in a swirl of rapidly rising mortgage rates and much market uncertainty.' One part of the country dominated the list THE NUMBER of millionaire housing rows in Scotland is increasing after a new record was set for £1million-plus sales. New figures have revealed 514 properties around the country fetched more than seven figures in 2024 - a rise from 506 the previous year and a new high. 4 Edinburgh's Morningside ranked high on the list Credit: Getty 4 The harbour at St Andrews in Fife Credit: Alamy 4 Homes in Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire, were also high on the list. Credit: Alamy Edinburgh's New Town, West End and Morningside dominated the sales with St Andrews and Bearsden also featuring. The research from estate agents Rettie & Co shows the market remains dominated by the East of Scotland, including Edinburgh, which accounted for nearly 80 per cent of £1 million-plus sales in Scotland in 2024. The EH3 postcode in Edinburgh, which includes the New Town and West End, is the number one location for seven figure sales with 53 in 2024. Its appeal is said to reflect sustained demand for 'centrally located, architecturally significant homes within walking distance of key city amenities, excellent schools, and cultural institutions'. The EH10 Edinburgh district, which includes Morningside, took second spot with 50 sales. St Andrews in Fife continues to be a strong performer with 24 sales over £1 million in the KY16 postcode last year. The G61 postcode in Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire, was the only West of Scotland area to feature in the top 10 with 16 sales. Simon Rettie, managing director of Rettie & Co, said: 'Scotland's prime residential market continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience, with 2024 marking a record-breaking year for £1 million-plus home sales. 'While Edinburgh and the East remain dominant, it's encouraging to see continued activity emerging in the West. 'Buyers are showing confidence again - a trend we expect to build through 2025.' This house has appeared on dozens of hit TV shows - but would YOU recognise it? The research showed just five Edinburgh postcodes accounted for nearly 40 per cent of all sales over £1 million. The top 10 postcodes in Scotland are EH3, EH10, EH4, EH9, EH12, KY16, EH1, G61, EH16 and EH13. Dr John Boyle, director of strategy and research at Rettie, said: 'The Scottish £1 million-plus market has weathered recent economic headwinds and emerged with renewed strength, culminating in a record number of sales in 2024. 'Edinburgh continues to lead the way, underpinned by its established prime districts and resilient buyer demand, while the wider East of Scotland market has consolidated its position as the engine of high-value transactions. 'Encouraging signs are now emerging in the West, with areas like Bearsden showing growth. Meanwhile, the sharp increase in sales just below the £1 million threshold points to a strengthening middle-prime segment, likely to feed future growth in the top tier. 'This is reflected on the ground, with strong demand continuing to drive competition in desirable neighbourhoods. 'With interest rates stabilising and market confidence improving, the outlook for Scotland's high-value residential market in the remainder of 2025 is one of cautious optimism.'

Irish bookmaker to become West Ham shirt sponsor in £13m deal

Irish bookmaker BoyleSports is due to be unveiled as the new shirt sponsor for West Ham football club on Tuesday, as it launches a big push into the UK market. The sponsorship deal, which cost up to £13m (€15.1m), coincides with a rebrand of BoyleSports, and with talk of the company investing £100m on opening 200 new shops in Britain. Rival bookmakers, such as William Hill and Ladbrokes, have been closing their shops there and focusing on the US and on online platforms. BoyleSports, the largest independently owned bookmaking brand in Ireland, will only have a year to activate their full West Ham sponsorship, because a ban on bookies putting their names on the front of shirts comes into effect next summer for Premier League clubs. At that point, the Irish company's name will switch to the shirt sleeves. Founded by John Boyle, the chain opened its first shop in Markethill, Co Armagh in 1982. The company now has a total of 390 outlets, with 70 of them in Britain. Vlad Kaltenieks, the Lativan law graduate who was appointed chief executive in December 2022, has said that the planned UK expansion will be funded by shareholders. Because of the exodus of other bookie chains, he believes the UK is an under-appreciated market. 'As a family-owned, independent business, we've built a loyal customer base in Ireland by focusing on trust, service and a seamless experience and now we're rolling that approach out even more widely across the UK,' he told the Sunday Times last weekend. Although he had a track record of building online platforms at other gambling companies before he joined BoyleSports, Mr Kaltenieks has previously described himself as a 'strong believer in retail'. BoyleSports has previously had sponsorship deals with other English football clubs, including partnerships with teams in the midlands and north-east of the country such as Newcastle, Sunderland and Birmingham. However, this will be the first time its name will appear on the shirt of a Premier League outfit. The culture of bookie shops in England is quite dingy The tie-up with West Ham has come as a surprise, as BoyleSports does not have a significant presence in the east of London. It was also thought that the company was pulling back from football. 'The culture of bookie shops in England is quite dingy, so BoyleSports is looking to improve the experience,' an industry source said. 'There's talk about having one 'super shop' in London, in the style of Nike or Apple, rather than a series of kiosks.' Two years ago, amid talk of a legal ban, Premier League clubs agreed voluntarily to take the names of bookies' firms off the front of shirts, and this takes effect at the end of the 2025/26 season. Were West Ham to be relegated from the Premier League next season, BoyleSports could seek to put their name on the front of the jersey again, as the voluntary ban does not extend to the Championship.
