You might not know 97-year-old star citizen Jack Edwards — but here's why you should
At 97, John (Jack) Edwards is a star citizen of Amherstburg, Ont. He doesn't miss a council meeting, sits on the local economic development advisory committee, and every two to three weeks has lunch with the mayor. "I like people. I've always loved being with people," Edwards said, explaining his passion for political volunteerism. "I have always enjoyed being on small committees, very intimate, and that's what this is all about." Passion for local politics Edwards is a beloved member of the community and a close friend of Amherstburg Mayor Michael Prue. "Jack is a character. Jack is lovable. Jack is fun.... He's just a good, good guy," Prue said. "I'm so proud he's my friend." Edwards's passion for local politics began many years ago when he lived in nearby Windsor. He joined committees when Bert Weeks was the mayor in the 1970s. Throughout that time, he also went on some exciting "twin city" visits to Europe, including a 1977 trip to England, during which time the group from Windsor in southwestern Ontario was invited to attend a celebration at Windsor Castle for Queen Elizabeth II's 25th anniversary of her coronation. "It was a sensational trip," he recalled. He eventually moved to Toronto to work in the pharmaceutical industry and his political volunteerism was put on pause. Twenty-five years ago he eventually made his way back to Windsor-Essex in retirement and settled in Amherstburg. Appointed every year Meeting Prue drew Edwards back into politics. Prue knocked on Edwards's door while campaigning when he was running for town council (he was elected in 2018). That meeting marked the beginning of their friendship and Edwards's return to politics. "He is such a regular, and the town and the council love him," Prue said. "He gets appointed every single year to serve on the [development] committee because he's a fountain of knowledge. He knows everything that has happened around this community for the last, I don't know, 50 or 60 years." During their lunch meetings, Edwards offers advice and helps inform the mayor on what's best for the town. "It's like listening to a whole bunch of really good ideas of what I should do, what the town should do and what he wants to do for economic development. It's just a joy to come with him," Prue said. "Some people don't like modernization, or movement or the town to change, and Jack is steadfast in saying this is what the town needs." Won a special award His efforts haven't gone unnoticed. The mayor explained that earlier this year, the town chose two individuals to receive the King Charles III Coronation Medal, given to someone who has made a significant contribution to their community. Prue said the town made sure Edwards was a recipient. "It was humbling," Edwards said. "I'm so proud of it." The mayor also said he believes Edwards is the oldest contributing member to any council committee in all of Ontario. "He comes religiously. He knows what he's talking about. He commands the show," Prue said. Aside from his passion for community engagement, Edwards is deeply proud of his family: his wife, six children, 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. As for what keeps him going, good health and keeping an active mind are key. "It's when you lose the ability to recognize, to remember — that's when the pain steps in. And that hasn't happened to me yet," he said. "I keep active. I'm on committees, I meet with people, and that's what keeps me feeling great."

Hamilton police concerned for missing 62-year-old man who was last seen nearly 2 weeks ago
Hamilton police say they are still searching for a 62-year-old who was reported missing nearly two weeks ago, with officials expressing concern about the man's situation due to the recent heat wave. Police say John Edwards was reported missing from St. Joseph's Villa, a retirement home in Dundas, Ont., on June 11. Officials say Edwards lives with cognitive impairments that are comparable to dementia and, as a result, are growing 'increasingly concerned' for his safety. Investigators say they have explored numerous tips since Edwards's disappearance, including collecting footage and reviewing potential sightings. They add that many of those tips have been ruled out. Police say the last confirmed sighting placed Edwards in the area of Milgrove Side Road, walking south from Highway 6, shortly after 4 p.m. on the day he was reported missing. Video captured Edwards walking west on Concession 5 West, heading toward Carey Road, just a few minutes later. On either June 20 or June 21, around 11 a.m., police say a man resembling Edwards was seen walking east along the pipeline between Bennett Boulevard and Thompson Road South in Milton. Police say they have been knocking on doors, but nobody has been able to provide relevant information or footage so far. Investigators are asking anyone with video of these potential sightings to contact them. 'Police are continuing to appeal to the public and businesses as Mr. Edwards' movements appear erratic and unpredictable, with no discernible pattern,' Tuesday's release reads. John Edwards map A map of all reported sightings of 62-year-old John Edwards, who was reported missing on June 11. (Hamilton Police Service) Edwards does not have a cell phone, money, identification or any means of tracking, police say, which is posing a challenge in finding him without the public's help. 'At this time, there is nothing to indicate foul play; however, the recent heat wave makes Mr. Edwards' situation even more urgent and concerning.' Police describe Edwards as a white man, standing at five-foot-11, weighing 214 pounds with shoulder-length brown hair and brown eyes. They say he walks with a 'slight shuffle,' and may be carrying a small, light-coloured ball in his hand. Officials say he was last seen wearing baggy shorts, a striped blue T-shirt, white socks, running shoes, and possibly a ball cap. Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact police at 905-546-3886 or the Missing Person Unit at 905-540-8549, or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

Hamilton police release video of missing man as search enters second week
John Edwards captured on security camera walking at an Esso gas station in Hamilton on Wednesday, June 11, 2025. (Hamilton Police Service) Hamilton police have released a new video of a missing 62-year-old man as the search for him enters a second week. A security camera caught John Edwards walking at an Esso gas station at 947 Centre Road at 3:10 p.m. on June 11. 'Over the past several days, officers and community partners have conducted extensive ground searches and reviewed hours of surveillance footage in an effort to retrace Mr. Edwards' movements and locate him safely,' Hamilton police said in a news release accompanying the video on Thursday. 'Investigators have positively tracked Mr. Edwards through various locations in Dundas throughout the morning of June 11. His movements included frequent stops, seemingly to pick up items from the ground, and lacked a clear destination.' Police said Edwards left St. Joseph's Villa at 9:15 a.m. that day. Just before 10 a.m., he was seen walking west on the north side of Baldwin Street, passing the McDonald's on Cootes Drive. He passed Memorial Square at 10:14 a.m., police said. Edwards turned south onto John Street and was seen on video walking west on King Street at Peel Street at 10:39 a.m. After walking through the Esso parking lot to Concession 6, he proceeded southwest, police said. 'John is known to enjoy walks through local trails and parks in Dundas and is familiar with the area. It is unusual for him not to return home, and there is growing concern for his well-being,' police said in a previous news release. Edwards is described as five-foot-eleven, weighs about 214 pounds, has shoulder-length brown hair and brown eyes, and walks with a slight shuffle. He may be carrying a small, light-coloured ball in his hand. Police said he was last seen wearing baggy shorts, a striped blue T-shirt, white socks, running shoes and possibly a ball cap. They are asking residents in Dundas, Flamborough and Waterdown to check their properties and review security, doorbell or dashcam footage recorded on June 11. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Missing Persons Unit at 905-540-8549 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
