John Goodman Reveals the 4 Words He'd Say to Roseanne Barr If She'd Talk to Him
John Goodman revealed what he would say to his former co-star Roseanne Barr if he saw her today. After years of estrangement from his TV wife, the actor told Entertainment Tonight he would say four words to Barr if he could: 'Hi, how you doing?' Goodman, who co-starred with Barr on the 1980s sitcom Roseanne for a total of 10 seasons, including a 2018 revival, left it at that as interviewer Kevin Frazier nodded and said, 'I hear you, I hear you.' Goodman's four-word response came days after he told The Hollywood Reporter that he hasn't spoken to Barr in nearly a decade. 'I'd rather doubt if she wants to talk to me,' he said. 'We haven't talked for about seven or eight years.' Of his past friendship with Barr, he added, 'We hit it off from jump street. She made me laugh, and I made her laugh, and wow, it was so much fun. …Things are so different now, but it was a special time.' Barr stopped speaking to her former co-star in 2018 after she was fired by ABC amid a racist Twitter scandal. Her lead matriarch character was killed off the Roseanne series. Goodman and the rest of the cast went on to star in The Conners spinoff, which ran for seven seasons, ending in April 2025. Goodman previously defended Barr to the Sunday Times, telling the outlet that he knew 'for a fact that she's not a racist.' In an interview with Variety, the actor said he felt 'bad" for his longtime co-star amid the scandal. 'I just feel terrible about the whole thing,' Goodman said. 'We had a great time. And I love her. She's just her own person. … I miss her. I wish her well.' In June, Barr, 72, confirmed that she no longer speaks to Goodman or her former Roseanne co-stars Laurie Metcalf, Lecy Goranson, Sara Gilbert, and Michael Fishman. She also expressed outrage over her character being killed off the show she helped create nearly 40 years ago. "No, I'm not friends with none of them. They're all in the past,' she told Fox News Digital in an interview. 'We don't talk. … They f---ed it all up with their greed and ridiculous stupidity …. F--k them, but I wish them well.'John Goodman Reveals the 4 Words He'd Say to Roseanne Barr If She'd Talk to Him first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 15, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword

John Goodman Reveals Elizabeth Taylor Talked About Epic Hollywood Love Affair on Movie Set
John Goodman revealed that Elizabeth Taylor talked about her tumultuous romance with Richard Burton when they worked together in the 1994 film, The Flintstones. The Hollywood legend played Wilma Flintstone's mother, Pearl Slaghoople, in the 1994 live-action comedy, marking her final film role in an iconic 60-year career. According to Taylor's official website, the famed actress spent five days shooting The Flintstones, where she 'navigated the set like the pro she was.' 'She made final touches to her own makeup, received daily gag gifts from the crew, and made light of stressful situations,' the site teased. Goodman, who played Fred Flintstone in the film adaptation of the classic 1960s cartoon series, told People magazine that he was starstruck when Taylor spoke to him about Burton during a filming break. "Elizabeth Taylor was my mother-in-law in The Flintstones," the actor recalled. "She took a fall in the film, so we were just squatting around her, talking to her. I just got her talking about [Richard] Burton a little bit when she was on the floor, and it was wow." "There's old-school movie stars and then there's Elizabeth Taylor,' Goodman added. 'She was at the zenith in her life and in films. I never thought I'd ever get to meet her." Taylor and Burton were the most iconic celebrity couple of the 1960s and '70s. They met on the set of Cleopatra in Rome in 1961 when they were both married to other people (him to Sybil Williams and her to Eddie Fisher). The two made 11 films together, including The Taming of the Shrew and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? They married for the first time in 1964. Taylor and Burton's legendary romance ultimately ended in two divorces—one in 1974 and another in 1976 In the 2010 book Furious Love: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and the Marriage of the Century, Taylor told authors Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger that Burton was her greatest love and continued to send her passionate letters up until his death at age 58. Burton's final love letter to Taylor was sent to her Bel-Air, CA, home three days before he died in Switzerland on August 5, 1984. 'In my heart, I will always believe we would have been married a third and final time,' Taylor reflected in the book. 'From those first moments in Rome, we were always madly and powerfully in love.'John Goodman Reveals Elizabeth Taylor Talked About Epic Hollywood Love Affair on Movie Set first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 21, 2025

John Goodman Reveals ‘Roseanne' Co-Star Was His ‘Acting Hero'
John Goodman revealed why it was an easy decision for him to sign on to the Roseanne spinoff, The Conners, in 2018. In a video chat with People magazine, the actor said that his co-stars from the ABC sitcom are some of his 'favorite people" in the world. The sitcom, which ran for seven seasons, from 2018 to 2025, starred several of Goodman's castmates from the long-running Roseanne series, including Sara Gilbert and Lecy Goranson. But Goodman, 73, told the outlet that working with Laurie Metcalf, the Academy Award-nominated actress who played his TV sister-in-law, was the biggest bonus. 'My acting hero Laurie Metcalf was worth the price of admission,' Goodman said. 'It was worth showing up every day for work just to see what that woman would do. She's magic. She's just she's amazing. And God, she made me laugh. You know, my jaw would drop when I'd watch her. She's so good.' The Conners spinoff was developed after a 2018 Roseanne revival was cut short when series star Roseanne Barr became involved in a racist Twitter scandal. Her iconic character, whom she played from 1988 to 1997 on the ABC sitcom Roseanne and then for one season in a 2018 reboot, was killed off the series while the rest of the cast moved on with The Conners spinoff. Goodman, who is no longer in touch with Barr, told People that he had 'so much fun' in the early years of the show. 'And Roseanne and I have always been able to make each other laugh,' he said. 'I would try to get her to pee her pants laughing, and she obliged me from time to time.' Goodman has admitted that he has not spoken to Barr in years. In a July 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he admitted that. 'I'd rather doubt if she wants to talk to me. We haven't talked for about seven or eight years.' Barr, 72, has said her Conner family is in her past. "No, I'm not friends with none of them,' she told Fox News Digital in June. 'They're all in the past. We don't talk.'John Goodman Reveals 'Roseanne' Co-Star Was His 'Acting Hero' first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 22, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword

John Goodman Lost 200 Pounds Thanks to This Simple Lifestyle Change
After embarking on a healthier lifestyle in the early 2000s, John Goodman is still maintaining his weight loss nearly two decades later. Despite a recent hip injury the 73-year-old sustained in the U.K. earlier this year, the 'Conners' star still looked sleek and slim while attending the Los Angeles premiere of the new 'Smurfs' movie on July 13. The actor has experienced many ups and downs in his weight-loss journey over the years, and once weighed close to 400 pounds. As he's progressed, Goodman has been quite open about the secrets to his success and the setbacks he's encountered along the way. Below, we're outlining some of the weight-loss and maintenance methods he's followed. Goodman Jumpstarted His Weight-Loss Journey When He Got Sober Throughout his career, Goodman has been known for his comedic chops and his stature. In the early 2000s, however, the actor started to noticeably slim down. During the early days of his health transformation, Goodman began speaking out about his decision to stop drinking. During a 2012 interview with The Guardian, the actor explained why he decided to stop drinking in 2007. 'It was getting to be too much,' he said. 'It was 30 years of a disease that was taking its toll on everyone around me and it had got to the point where, every time I did it, it was becoming more and more debilitating. It was life or death. It was time to stop.' The actor addressed his sobriety again in 2018 while speaking with TODAY's Willie Geist, revealing that he used to drink on set and experience "slurred" speech. After enlisting the help of a rehabilitation facility, Goodman began to work toward sobriety. Goodman Went On To Lose 100 Pounds While speaking with People in 2010, Goodman opened up about his recent 100-pound weight loss, explaining that his approach was quite simple. 'It takes a lot of creative energy to sit on your ass and figure out what you're going to eat next … I wanted to live life better,' he said. For Goodman, making an effort to get up and move around more made a world of difference as he embarked on his weight-loss journey. At the time, the actor was working out six days a week with personal trainer Mackie Shilstone. 'I'm breaking a sweat but I'm not going nuts,' he said. Meanwhile, Shilstone told the publication that his client was 'very agile' and determined to reach his health goals. 'He remembers what it feels like to be extremely heavy and it's something he doesn't want again,' he said. Goodman also told People he cut sugar from his diet in an effort to eat healthier. Goodman Continued His Slow and Steady Approach to Weight Loss For Goodman, living a healthy lifestyle is an ongoing journey, not a race. In 2015, his personal trainer told the New York Post his client had been diligent about improving his health. 'This didn't happen overnight — it's been an ongoing process,' Shilstone said. The personal trainer also noted that Goodman had found success following a 'Mediterranean-style eating plan' that prioritized fish, fruit, vegetables, nuts and olive oil. When it came to his ongoing fitness routine, Goodman aimed to take 10,000 to 12,000 steps a day and relied on the treadmill and elliptical bicycle, per Shilstone. 'There needs to be strategic planning,' he said. 'This time, he really wanted to do it.' As anyone who's ever lost weight knows, it's not a linear journey. Goodman understands that all too well, as he told AARP in 2018. 'I don't want to be an example to anybody when the weight comes thundering back on — when I start eating Crisco out of the can with a spoon and a side of confectioner's sugar,' he said. During the interview, Goodman chalked his weight loss up to one simple thing: 'It was basically just portion control, and 'I don't need it,'' he said. Before then, the actor said he 'was just shoving everything into my mouth.' Goodman Announced That He'd Lost 200 Pounds in 2023 During an interview with Rolling Stone in 2023, Goodman revealed that he'd lost 200 pounds in recent years. The star attributed simple activities, like walking his dogs, to helping him maintain his weight loss. He also said boxing was a go-to workout for quite some time, but admitted that he took a temporary break from the hardcore sport. "I was boxing up until then and I haven't been able to do that since Covid because I'm lazy. I haven't been exercising, but I'm going to start a routine again this summer where I can get some stuff done. I've just let everything go just because I haven't had the energy because of the jobs," he said. While describing his love for boxing, Goodman said he didn't really get into sparring but mostly spent his time "hitting the mitts." "I never got good enough where I would trust myself to spar because once I get whacked in the face, I don't know if I wouldn't lose it," he explained. Looking ahead, however, the actor said he had a goal of advancing his skills. "But it's usually just an hour, hour and a half of hitting the mitts, hitting the bags, learning footwork. It's great," he said. This article was originally published on
