Man in hospital under guard after armed confrontation with police on Central Coast

A 42-year-old man has been arrested following an alleged armed confrontation with police and a pursuit on the New South Wales Central Coast. Police were called to an address in San Remo at about 5am when they found a man standing in the middle of the road armed with a knife. Officers deployed a taser but the man got into his car and allegedly drove at police, ramming a patrol vehicle. Tuggerah Lakes Police District Superintendent Chad Gillies said one officer fired their gun but the man drove away. "He managed to avoid that," Superintendent Gillies said. "Then at about 7.30 this morning police managed to identify and locate him at Gorokan where he was arrested, again by the use of a taser." The man was taken to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle for assessment under police guard, Superintendent Gillies said. A woman injured during an alleged domestic assault, which took place before the stand-off, has been taken to hospital. "People, be assured that there is no threat to the community," Superintendent Gillies said.

EXCLUSIVE Eshay teen accused of hit-and-run deaths of a tourist and her daughter's unborn baby was on PAROLE at the time of the horror crash

A 19-year-old Newcastle man was on parole at the time of an alleged hit-and-run crash that killed a woman and caused another to lose her unborn baby. Leeton Bates was allegedly behind the wheel of a Holden Commodore when it collided head-on with a Hyundai sedan at North Lambton, Newcastle, about 2.40am on Sunday. The 55-year-old female passenger in the Hyundai, who was on holiday from India, died at the scene. Her pregnant 28-year-old daughter, who was driving the Hyundai, was rushed to John Hunter Hospital where she remains in a serious condition. Police were later informed that she was 25-weeks pregnant and had lost her unborn child due to the crash. Daily Mail Australia can reveal Bates had only been back on the streets for six weeks before the tragedy occurred, after he was released from jail on May 3. Further details can't be published for legal reasons. Two passengers in the back seat of the Commodore – girls aged 15 and 17 – were treated paramedics and taken to John Hunter Hospital, where they remained in serious conditions on Wednesday. Bates, who allegedly did not have a licence to drive at the time of the crash, is accused of fleeing the scene before police arrived, along with the front-seat passenger. Police Strike Force Carrarang, along with officers from Operation Utah, arrested Bates at a home in Mayfield, north-west of Newcastle, on Tuesday. He was taken to Waratah Police Station and charged with seven driving offences. Police also spoke to a 17-year-old girl believed to have been the front passenger of the Commodore. Bates' charges include three counts of causing bodily harm by misconduct - in charge of motor vehicle, one count each of aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death – escaping pursuit, aggravated dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm - escaping pursuit, using a vehicle displaying misleading number plates and never licensed person driving a vehicle on a road. Bates, from Wallsend in Newcastle's west, appeared in Parramatta Local Court on Wednesday. He did not apply for bail and it was formally refused. His matter was adjourned to Newcastle Local Court on August 20. A highway patrol officer first spotted the Holden Commodore with fake number plates on Newcastle Road in Wallsend. The officer stopped behind the car, which was carrying three other teenagers, at a traffic light before sounding the siren. The Holden Commodore sped away on the wrong side of the road, with police saying they chose not to pursue the car due to safety concerns. A short time later, a second police vehicle spotted the Commodore in North Lambton, allegedly crossing onto the wrong side of the road. While allegedly speeding on the wrong side of the road, the Commodore then crashed head-on with the Hyundai sedan travelling in the opposite direction. Police allege the Commodore was not stolen and was registered to the passenger who allegedly fled the scene with Bates. Pictures from the scene of the crash showed the Holden with red P-plates displayed on the back of the car. 'What's occurred is truly tragic, two women driving around innocently,' Acting Assistant Commissioner Paul Dunstan said. The conduct of police in the chase will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).
