Former Royal AM coach John Maduka was unveiled as Magesi'snew coach on Thursday. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix John Maduka has described it as 'a special honour' to be appointed head coach of Magesi FC and expressed his satisfaction at working alongside long-serving assistant coach Jacky Ledwaba. Speaking at his unveiling in the Limpopo capital, the former Malawian international said there was no need to bring in his own technical team, as he did not want to tamper with a successful structure. 'You don't break something unnecessarily,' Maduka said. 'I strongly believe that the technical team here has been part of the club for a long time. They helped Magesi gain promotion all the way from the ABC Motsepe League to the PSL, so they are clearly capable and know their job. "If there's no need for me to bring in someone, why should I?' Next Stay Close ✕ Maduka takes over from Owen da Gama, who parted ways with the club after failing to reach an agreement on a contract extension. Club management believe that Maduka — previously in charge of Royal AM — is the right man to take the team forward. Curiously, the club declined to reveal the length of Maduka's contract, with general manager Hero Makgamatha implying it was effectively a 'pay-as-you-go' deal. 'But we can strengthen the technical team if the need arises,' Maduka added. 'This is a special moment for me, an honour to work for Magesi, which is a very good team. It's a team that always wants to compete, and I am looking forward to the challenge ahead.' Maduka has set his sights on a top-eight league finish and hopes the club can retain the Carling Knockout title they famously won in their maiden top-flight season. He replaces Da Gama, who helped Magesi avoid relegation after joining in December as a replacement for Clinton Larsen. Larsen had guided the club to promotion and led them to Carling Knockout glory with a shock 2-1 win over Mamelodi Sundowns, but parted ways with the club after a poor run of league results. While Da Gama's tenure did not yield dramatic improvements, Magesi managed to stabilise under his leadership. Their ability to avoid defeat at their new home, the Seshego Stadium — having previously used the old Peter Mokaba Stadium — proved crucial in amassing enough points to retain their Premiership status, finishing in 13th place.

Magesi FC announces John Maduka as new coach ahead of 2025/26 season

MAGESI FC have hired Malawian John Maduka as their new coach for the upcoming Betway Premiership 2025/26 season. The Limpopo outfit revealed the former Royal AM coach, Maduka as their new coach on their social media platform X. " HE'S HERE! M agesi Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of John Maduka as head coach. Welcome to the family!" Maduka replaces Owen da Ga who could not reach an agreement with the club on the terms of a contract renewal after he saved the club from relegation. Da Gama joined Magesi in December as a replacement for Clinton Larsen who had earned the club promotion and even led them to winning the Carling Knockout, courtesy of a shock 2-1 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns. Larsen and the club parted ways as the Magesi struggled for good results in the league campaign. Under Da Gama, they did not really do much better although their ability to avoid defeats at their new home of Seshsgo Stadium - they were previously using the old Peter Mokoba Stadium as their homeground - they garnered enough points to avoid the drop. They finished in 13th place to retain their elite league status. Now Maduka, the former Malawian international who was in charge of Royal AM, takes over the baton and expectations from Dikwena. His mandate will be that he helps the team end much higher than the precarious 13th place. Maduka was with Royal AM whose season ended prematurely due to club owner Shaun Mkhize's troubles with the South African Revenue Services. He previously coached Bloemfomtein Celtic. Details of his contract will be revealed at the press conference coming up in the afternoon.

Bloemfontein Celtic looming on PSL horizon as SuperSport United speculation swirls

John Maduka Bloemfontein Celtic captain John Maduka and his team celebrate with the 2005 SAA Supa 8 trophy after beating SuperSport United at Olen Park, Potchefstroom. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix The South African football landscape is abuzz with anticipation as plans are reportedly in motion for the acquisition of SuperSport United by the now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic. This striking development emerges as speculation heats up around the future of the beleaguered PSL Tshwane outfit, who are facing uncertain times as they grapple with the challenge of relegation. Sources indicate that the blueprint for this sale is in place, yet officials remain tight-lipped about the surprising turn of events. The club's precarious position was compounded by a rocky start to the season, culminating in the departure of seasoned coach Gavin Hunt. Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Andre Arendse has stepped in as caretaker coach, guiding a side currently languishing in 13th place with just four matches left this season to prove their mettle. The spectre of relegation hangs heavily as they seek to salvage what remains of a disappointing campaign, which is set to conclude without any silverware. In August 2021, Bloemfontein Celtic sold their Premier Soccer League (PSL) status to reality TV star and businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize for R50 million. At the time, the Free State giants were one of the most supported teams in the country. Despite these mounting reports, SuperSport United's current management remain cautious. Stan Matthews, the CEO of SuperSport, has come forward to dismiss the speculation. 'Since 2019, there have been persistent rumours about the club being sold,' he stated. 'As far as I know, our main focus right now is to avoid relegation.' Media queries directed to SuperSport's chair, Khulu Sibiya and media officer, Brian Moshoeshoe, have gone unanswered.
