Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer ranked No. 6 QB in 'College Football 26'
Real-world sports don't play quite like they do in video games. However, the annual release of each sport's iteration always generates excitement. Even before the game comes out, fans and the players themselves are eager to see individual team and player ratings. With the latest iteration of EA Sports College Football 26 set to be released on July 10, the ratings for individual players have begun leaking. Oklahoma is well represented with nine players rated 87 or higher, including two at 90 or above. Advertisement Washington State transfer John Mateer is tied for the sixth-highest rating at quarterback in the entire game. The new Sooners signal-caller received a 91, behind only Penn State's Drew Allar, LSU's Garrett Nussmeier, and Clemson's Cade Klubnik, all of whom received a 92 rating. Another transfer into the Oklahoma program, running back Jaydn Ott, rated at a 90. Ott was a first-team All-Pac 12 selection at California-Berkeley two seasons ago, but injuries dropped his rushing total to just 385 yards and four touchdowns on 116 carries last year. The next three highest-rated Sooners players are on the other side of the ball. Defensive back Robert Spears-Jennings (89) finished second on the team with 66 tackles last year and added 2 1/2 sacks, two fumble recoveries, and four forced fumbles. Defensive end R Mason Thomas (89) was a second-team All-SEC pick after registering 12 1/2 tackles for loss, including nine sacks. And defensive back Eli Bowen (88) finished as an ESPN Freshman All-American last year upon finishing with 30 tackles, an interception, and four pass break-ups. OU wide receiver Deion Burks rated as an 88, while defensive lineman Gracen Halton, linebacker Kip Lewis and defensive lineman Damonic Williams all rated as 87s in this year's version of the game. Washington State Football Preview 2025: Cougars Season Prediction, Win Total Projection, Top Players
Washington State Cougars Key to the Season Get that ground game not that Washington State didn't have a rushing attack over the years. It just wasn't emphasized as much as the high-octane passing game, especially when you have Cam Ward under center. John Mateer went off, but the running backs now have to become a bigger a pivot for a program that didn't hit the 2,000-yard rushing mark in over a decade, and then had a fantastic 2025. This year's offense needs Johnson and the rotation of runners to take over. Washington State Cougars Top Transfer, Biggest Transfer Loss Top Transfer In: Caleb Franci, LB of all the terrific players coming in from South Dakota State, Franci should be the most productive new star. He's only 6-1 and 190 pounds, but he's a big hitter with wonderful range, making 78 tackles with seven broken up passes and 11 tackles for loss last Transfer Out: John Mateer, QB Jr.A whole slew of players followed former Cougar head coach Jake Dickert to Wake Forest, including offensive tackle Fa'ailili Fa'amoe, guard AJ Hasson, and receiver Carlos Hernandez. But Mateer was a Heisman-caliber playmaker last year who led Wazzu in rushing and was one of the nation's most effective passers. Now he's about to be a superstar at Oklahoma. Washington State Cougars Key Game Washington, Sept. 20There's no Pac-12 Championship to play for, and it's not getting into the College Football Playoff with a few too many tough road games, but beat the arch-rival for the second year in a row, and the year is made in before October.- 2025 Washington State Schedule Breakdown Washington State Cougars Top 10 Players 1. New Oklahoma QB Comments on Red River Shootout Against Texas
New Oklahoma QB Comments on Red River Shootout Against Texas originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It seems like every year now Oklahoma has a different quarterback under center for the Red River Rivalry. Advertisement Especially recently with Sooners quarterbacks Michael Hawkins Jr., Dillon Gabriel, Davis Beville, and Caleb Williams starting against Texas the last four years. Assuming there are no injuries before the anticipated matchup, Oklahoma will field another new face against Texas this year in transfer quarterback John Mateer. It will be Mateer's first time participating in the rivalry game and it would also become Texas quarterback Arch Manning's first start against Oklahoma. Mateer spoke with the media this week and shared his excitement for one of the most unique environments in college football. "I only went to one (Red River Shootout) growing up, I don't remember which one it was. But I watched all of them, all of the highlights," Mateer began. "I've watched some film on it and all you see is a sea of people and it's like - this is insane. And I am so excited," he said. While the passion and hatred between the schools will always remain high, the two football programs appear to be on different paths. Texas has reached the College Football Playoff semifinals the last two seasons while Oklahoma finished unranked in 2024 and No. 15 in the AP Poll in 2023. Advertisement However, it doesn't matter where you're ranked in these particular rivalry games. Oklahoma handed Texas a 34-30 loss in 2023 despite the Longhorns being ranked the No. 3 team in the country. The kickoff for Texas vs. Oklahoma is set for 2:30 p.m. CT on Oct. 11. OU football lands Bowe Bentley, beats LSU for 4-star QB in Sooners' 2026 recruiting class
NORMAN — Offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle found his 2026 quarterback. Four-star Bowe Bentley, the No. 10 quarterback in the 2026 class, announced his commitment to Oklahoma over LSU Friday evening. Advertisement Bentley is the No. 94 overall recruit in the 2026 recruiting class, according to 247Sports' Composite ranking. A 6-foot-2, 200-pound rising senior from Celina, Texas, Bentley previously stood as the cycle's third-ranked uncommitted quarterback. After gaining interest from a plethora of Power 4 programs, Bentley narrowed his finalists to LSU and OU in May before taking official trips to see each program in the following weeks. A dynamic dual-threat with 4,200 total yards and 63 touchdowns as a junior at Celina High School, Bentley joins the Sooners as the top-ranked member of the program's 2026 class. Bentley's commitment comes less than 24 hours after the No. 14-ranked 2026 quarterback Jaden O'Neal decommitted from OU. Shortly after hiring Arbuckle this offseason, the Sooners offered Bentley while O'Neal was committed. Bentley took two unofficial visits to Norman — one in February and another in March — before officially visiting earlier this month. Advertisement Bentley visited Florida State, Georgia and Ohio State in March before zeroing in on LSU and OU. Bentley, who led Celina to a 16-0 record and state championship as a junior, becomes the Sooners' potential quarterback for the future after current starting quarterback John Mateer's tenure. Arbuckle and OU previously signed three-star quarterback Jett Niu in the 2025 cycle and welcomed transfers Whitt Newbauer (Mercer) and Gavin Frakes (Virginia).
