Saratoga Opening Day Pick 6 Too Tough To Hit; $118,028 Carries Over To Friday
Saratoga Opening Day Pick 6 Too Tough To Hit; $118,028 Carries Over To Friday originally appeared on Paulick Report. Friday's card at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., will be bolstered by a Pick 6 carryover of $118,028 after the multi-race wager went unsolved on Thursday's 10-race program that opened the 40-day summer meet. Advertisement The $1 Pick 6 returned $5,620 to bettors who selected 5-of-6 winners correctly. Opening Day's Pick 6 sequence kicked off in Race 5 with a win from favored Deep Satin [No. 3, $6.70] in the first division of the one-mile inner turf restricted Listed $135,000 De La Rose with Jose Ortiz aboard for trainer Cherie DeVaux. Hall of Famer John Velazquez piloted the next winner as the George Weaver-conditioned Cy Fair [No. 10, $13.40] captured a 5 1/2-furlong Mellon turf maiden, in Race 6. The next race saw Ortiz return to the winner's circle aboard Lobby Rendezvous [No. 1, $10.80] in a nine-furlong maiden for conditioner Matt Shirer, in Race 7. In Race 8, the second division of the De La Rose, Dylan Davis navigated Ozara [No. 1, $10.20] to a ground-saving victory for trainer Miguel Clement. In Race 9, a six-furlong starter allowance, Irad Ortiz, Jr. led Spiritual Lady [No. 1, $25.40] to an 11-1 victory for conditioner Gregory Charlerie's first career victory. Advertisement With just the favored Best Impression covered heading into the Race 10 finale, a seven-furlong claimer, the Gustavo Rodriguez-trained 16-1 longshot Dream On Cara [No. 2, $34.20] prevailed with Ricardo Santana, Jr. in the saddle, triggering the carryover. Friday's Pick 6 begins in Race 5 at approximately 3:27 p.m. Eastern and includes the Grade 3, $175,000 Coronation Cup in Race 7. First post for the 10-race card is 1:10 p.m. Saratoga Live will present live coverage and analysis of the summer meet at Saratoga Race Course on the networks of FOX Sports. 2025 Ohio Derby Odds: Can Clever Again Get Back On Track?
As the summer racing season heats up, all eyes turn to Thistledown for the 2025 edition of the Ohio Derby. Traditionally held in late June, this Grade 3 event has long served as a second-chance spotlight for three-year-olds who may have missed or underperformed in the Triple Crown trail. This year's field is full of talent and redemption arcs, and I've zeroed in on one horse I believe could steal the show. But first, take a look at the race contenders. Trainer: Paul McEntee Jockey: Marshall Mendez Sire: Upstart Odds: 30/1 Trainer: Ethan West Jockey: Jareth Loveberry Sire: Preservationist Odds: 7/2 Trainer: Kim Puhl Jockey: Luis Gonzalez Sire: Laoban Odds: 10/1 Trainer: Rick Dutrow, Jr. Jockey: John Velazquez Sire: Cloud Computing Odds: 3/1 Trainer: Jason DaCosta Jockey: Rocco Bowen Sire: Gun Runner Odds: 20/1 Trainer: Steve Asmussen Jockey: Jose Ortiz Sire: American Pharoah Odds: 9/5 Trainer: Nestor Rivera Jockey: Israel Rodriguez Sire: Cajun Breeze Odds: 30/1 Trainer: Peter Miller Jockey: Mike Smith Sire: Vino Rosso Odds: 12/1 Trainer: Brittany Vanden Berg Jockey: Chris Emigh Sire: Tapiture Odds: 20/1 Trainer: Jeremiah Englehart Jockey: Joseph Ramos Sire: Complexity Odds: 6/1 The Ohio Derby offers a $500,000 purse and draws a field of improving sophomores, many coming off solid performances in spring prep races or looking to rebound from tough beats. With 1 1/8 miles on dirt, the race typically favors tactical speed, though closers have found success with well-timed rides. This year's field includes a mix of proven stakes runners and up-and-comers. Horses like Who Dey and Copper Tax have gained attention with steady form, while others are taking a big class leap. The diversity in racing styles sets up an intriguing pace scenario—one that I believe will favor a horse with versatility and grit. I'm doing it. I'm making Clever Again my top pick, despite being wary after the colt's recent defeat in the Preakness Stakes (G1). Trained by Steve Asmussen and ridden by Jose Ortiz, Clever Again brings a combination of early speed and the ability to sit just off the pace—an ideal style for the Thistledown surface. He has been facing tougher competition all season and may finally land in a spot where his class edge shines. What makes Clever Again particularly appealing is the tactical advantage. If the pace heats up early, he has the ability to rate and strike. If things get loose on the front end, he's fast enough to go gate-to-wire. That kind of dual-threat profile is rare in a field where most horses are committed to either front-running or deep-closing styles. While I do like Clever Again, he's not a lock by any means. Who Dey, who ran impressively earlier this spring, continues to improve and could be a serious threat if the pace falls apart. Meanwhile, Copper Tax, though a bit inconsistent, has the back class and the figures to make some noise if he can find racing room. I also think Kentucky Derby (G1) runner Chunk of Gold could be a horse who could take advantage of a potential pace meltdown. Longshots like Just Steel and Deposition may lack big wins, but Aaron advises not to overlook them in exotics. These types often hit the board in races like this, especially if the front-runners tire late. For bettors, the Ohio Derby is one of the more playable summer stakes races before Saratoga and Del Mar begin, with potential value throughout the field. Bet Clever Again to win, and consider boxing him in exactas with a few price horses like Who Dey or Deposition. For those playing trifectas or superfectas, using deep closers underneath could catch a nice payday. Whether you're a seasoned handicapper or a casual fan looking for action, the 2025 Ohio Derby promises a competitive field and betting opportunities galore. Jockey Of The Week: John Velazquez Won Six Stakes During Belmont Festival
Jockey Of The Week: John Velazquez Won Six Stakes During Belmont Festival originally appeared on Paulick Report. Just as the Belmont Stakes Festival of Racing got underway on June 4, John Velazquez began accumulating stakes wins at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. By the end of the five-day festival, Velazquez had won a total of six stakes including three designated Grade 1 and one Grade 3 for a total of nine wins for the week. The panel of racing experts voted the Hall of Famer the Jockey of the Week for June 2 to June 8. The weekly honor recognizes jockeys for significant riding accomplishments and who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 1,050 active, retired and permanently disabled jockeys in the United States. Advertisement On Wednesday, New York Showcase Day, Velazquez posted a 2 1/2-length win in 1:43.27 aboard Spinning Colors in the Mount Vernon Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile inner turf route for older fillies and mares for trainer Mark Hennig. Friday was one of Velazquez's single best days highlighted by three graded stakes wins. Riding for trainer George Weaver in the G1 Ogden Phipps, Velazquez was aboard Dorth Vader. Under the patient handling of Velazquez, Dorth Vader raced in third until the top of the stretch when the 5-year-old took command cruising to a 4 3/4-length win in 1:49.10 for the 1 1/8 miles over a main track labeled as 'sloppy.' The G1 Ogden Phipps is a 'Win and You're In' for the Breeders' Cup Distaff. Originally scheduled for two miles on the turf, the G3 Belmont Gold Cup was moved to the main track at 1 3/4 miles. Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, Parchment Party drew into the race as a main track only entrant with Velazquez picking up the mount last minute. The 4-year-old colt raced near the back until the field entered the backstretch when Parchment Party began to pick off his opponents to draw off powerfully and win by 8 1/2 lengths in 2:57.86. Velazquez capped his day aboard 4-year-old She Feels Pretty for trainer Cherie DeVaux in the G1 New York Stakes at 1 3/16 miles on the yielding turf. Off as the overwhelming favorite in the field of seven, She Feels Pretty stalked the pace until the top of the stretch when she engaged Beach Bomb with Luis Saez. At Velazquez's urging, She Feels Pretty gained the upper hand to win by a half-length in 2:00.76. Velazquez added another stakes win on Saturday aboard 3-year-old A.P. Kid for trainer Todd Pletcher in the off-the-turf Pennine Ridge moved to the main track at one mile. A.P. Kid drew away from his five opponents to post a 6 1/4-length win in 1:36.83. On Sunday, Velazquez picked up the mount on the 5-year-old mare Ag Bullet from Flavien Prat who had prior riding commitments as a result of the G1 Jaipur being rescheduled from Saturday. Ag Bullet bested the boys with a two-length win in 1:03.62 for trainer Richard Baltas in the 5 1/2-furlong turf test. The race is a 'Win and You're In' for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint. Other nominees for Jockey of the Week included G1 Kentucky Derby hero Junior Alvarado with his first win in the G1 Belmont Stakes, Kendrick Carmouche who won the G1 Manhattan, Dylan Davis with wins in the G1 Acorn and G1 Just a Game, and Frankie Dettori who won the G1 Met Mile. 70-Year-Old Jockey Perry Ouzts Reaches 7,500 Career Wins Milestone
70-Year-Old Jockey Perry Ouzts Reaches 7,500 Career Wins Milestone originally appeared on Paulick Report. Jockey Perry Ouzts hit a new milestone after winning two races at Belterra Park, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Saturday, pushing his career win total to 7,500. Advertisement The first victory came in the second race, a maiden special weight event, aboard heavy favorite Calculated Move. He followed it up just two races later with a win in an allowance race riding Decree. Both horses were trained by Barbra Riley. Ouzts is the leader among active jockeys in North America, with Hall of Famer John Velazquez next with 6,703 wins. The native of Lepanto, Ark., is also the record holder as the oldest jockey to win a race in North America — a feat he accomplished last summer, breaking Frank Amonte Sr. 's record. "This could be my last summer," Ouzts said at the time after breaking the record. Nearly 11 months later, the soon to be 71 year-old is still riding – and winning. He has taken four out of his last five mounts. "I can still do it and feel good and like riding," Ouzts said last summer. "But it's getting harder to get mounts. Nobody wants to ride a 70-year-old. I don't want to be like Tom Brady and stay in two years too long." Advertisement However, Ouzts currently sits fourth in the jockey standings at Belterra with nine wins in 32 starts, and ranks third in earnings with $140,067. His 32 starts ranks sixth among all jockeys, and he's winning at an impressive 28 percent clip. Ouzts has spent most of his career riding in Northern Kentucky and Ohio. Though he has never won a graded stakes race, he was the subject of an award-winning 2015 documentary "Ironman Perry Ouzts," produced by the Hennegan Brothers. He ranks fifth all-time in wins, trailing only Russell Baze (12,842 wins), Laffit Pincay Jr. (9,530), William Shoemaker (8,833), and Pat Day (8,803). Over a career spanning more than 50 years, Ouzts has earned $52,796,464 in purses. He turns 71 on July 7. This story was originally reported by Paulick Report on Jun 1, 2025, where it first appeared.
