Jason Isaacs Has Some Thoughts About The New Harry Potter Actor Playing Lucius Malfoy
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The upcoming Harry Potter TV show is taking shape and, as part of that, the cast is being assembled. Over the past few weeks, Warner Bros. Discovery has been announcing the cast members, with the new Harry, Ron and Hermione stars even having been revealed. Earlier today, another round of supporting actors were revealed, including the actor who's set to play Lucius Malfoy. With that, Jason Isaacs – the actor who originated the role in the Potter films – took to social media to share his own take on the casting decision. It's been confirmed that British actor and musician Johnny Flynn is set to take on the role of Lucius on the highly anticipated fantasy series. Social media has apparently been set ablaze regarding the choice, with fans sharing their share of thoughts. Amid the chatter, Jason Isaacs took to X, where he retweeted a post about Flynn's casting. He also shared a sweet message of support for his predecessor as well as a humorous request: A fantastic actor, a lovely man and, irritatingly, a rather brilliant musician too. Couldn't have handed the snake-topped baton on to anyone better. Just please don't make him sing… Leave it to the always-witty Jason Isaacs to come to the party with a bit of humor. Nevertheless, he seems to be all in on Johnny Flynn taking over his famous role, and that probably shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Isaacs actually had the opportunity to view Flynn's talents up close, as they starred alongside each other in the 2021 war film Operation Mincemeat. So I wouldn't take that last comment as an insult of any kind, given it's likely more of a playful jab. More on the Harry Potter show The Incredible Way The New Harry Potter Series Is Already Coming Together (And Yes, A Real School Is Involved) This is indeed a solid acquisition for the Potter show, as Flynn is indeed a true talent. He's shown off his acting prowess in films like Emma and Stardust, with the latter featuring him in the role of late musician David Bowie. As for his TV credits, the multihyphenate has appeared on Lovesick, Genius and The Lovers among other titles. He's also the frontman and lead songwriter of the band Johnny Flynn & the Sussex Wit. So, needless to say, Flynn is a man of many talents. Jason Issacs' positive feelings about the casting definitely track, given what he's been saying as of late. In April, Isaacs joked about his version of Lucius eventually being forgotten, due to someone else playing him on the eventual TV show. Despite that, Isaacs truly seemed to be at peace with the notion of his interpretation being pushed aside. On top of that, before he made those statements, he even pitched Meryl Streep to play Lucius. (And that's honestly a fun thought.) As mentioned a host of other Harry Potter characters were cast today, joining the previously announced cast. Check out the latest batch of stars to be confirmed for the show: Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge I'm confident that Johnny Flynn will bring something unique to the role of Lucius Malfoy. Sure, it'll be different from Jason Isaacs' take on the character but, of course, Flynn's goal shouldn't be to repeat what's come before. Whatever happens though, I agree with Isaacs in that Flynn's stellar musical talents should be left at the door once he takes on this iconic role. The Harry Potter show is set to premiere sometime in 2026 and will be available for HBO Max subscription holders. In the meantime, why not take a look at the titles that lie within the 2025 TV schedule.

Jason Isaacs Supports Johnny Flynn Cast as Lucius Malfoy in HBO's ‘Harry Potter' Series
Jason Isaacs is passing the torch to the new Lucius Malfoy. On Monday, HBO announced nine more castmembers in the upcoming series, including who will play the Malfoy father and son Slytherins. Ripley actor and musician Johnny Flynn was cast as Lucius Malfoy and newcomer Lox Pratt will play Draco Malfoy. More from The Hollywood Reporter Patrick Schwarzenegger Is Done Playing Douches HBO's 'Harry Potter' Casts 9 More Roles, Including Draco Malfoy 'Big Little Lies' Creator David E. Kelley Is "Hopeful" Season 3 Will "Happen": "Everyone Is Very Committed to It" Shortly after the casting news broke, Isaacs, who played the role in the films, took to X to share his support for Flynn, 'A fantastic actor, a lovely man and, irritatingly, a rather brilliant musician too. Couldn't have handed the snake-topped baton on to anyone better. Just please don't make him sing…' Last week, Harry Potter fans also got more exciting news when it was announced on Thursday that Tom Felton, who played Draco in the films, would play Draco again — but in the Broadway show Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which begins on Nov. 11 and is a 19-week engagement through March 22, 2026. Felton attended the Tony Awards on Sunday and was a presenter, to which Isaacs took to X to confirm that he will go see his movie son on Broadway. 'Saw you presenting on the Tonys tonight son — you looked good, sounded good and did great. Tickets booked for November x,' Isaacs wrote. Prior to the award show airing, Felton spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about how it's the 'perfect' time to step back into the role of Draco, because in the play, Draco is now a Dad and the same age that Felton is in real life. 'Now, it's very much reprising the role, but also creating a new one because he's a father now. He doesn't want to make the same mistakes that Lucius made with Draco,' Felton said. 'So, it's familiar, but it's brand, brand new, so I'm really excited for that.' The star began her acting career when she was just a teenager on CBBC and in 2015 was praised for her portrayal of Princess Margaret in A Royal Night Out. BAFTA-winning actor Daniel, 42, will play her on-screen husband Vernon, though it's yet to be revealed who will play their son. Daniel scooped a gong for his leading role as Eric Morecambe in the 2011 BBC film Eric and Ernie. Fiona Shaw and Richard Griffiths played the characters in the Harry Potter film franchise. The casting news comes as Hollywood heavyweight John Lithgow was previously announced as the new Albus Dumbledore. Janet McTeer, known for her powerhouse performances on stage and screen, will step into the sharp heels of Professor McGonagall, while rising star Paapa Essiedu takes on the darker, more complicated role of Severus Snape – a part made famous by the late Alan Rickman. Actor and comedian Nick Frost will play legendary Hogwarts groundskeeper Hagrid in the adaption. The series is a reboot of J.K. Rowling 's seven-book series and is a full-scale, decade-long adaptation that promises to stick far more closely to the original storylines than the blockbuster films Nick, 53, previously revealed he's been targeted by trans activists for signing up for the popular role and even had to switch his Instagram comments off. Rowling, who is serving as an executive producer of the new series, has become a vocal presence in the transgender debate. Distancing himself from her trans views, Nick told the Observer: 'She's allowed her opinion and I'm allowed mine. They just don't align in any way, shape of form.' Previously speaking about the casting, executive producer and director Mark Mylod said: 'We're delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can't wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life.' The new series is aims to 'lead a new generation of fandom' and hopes to recapture the beloved details Harry Potter fans have enjoyed for 25 years. Filming officially kicked off last month, though the cast and crew were reportedly left 'bewildered' by producers' choice of location for the shoot. Production has been set up on the Île de Sein off the coast of Brittany where they are thought to be re- creating the famous moment that Hagrid says, 'You're a wizard Harry! ' A source told The Sun: 'This caused a certain amount of amusement among the British crew who all agreed that they could have easily got windswept in virtually any part of the British Isles. 'They've been slightly bewildered by the fact they've actually gone to France to make a show which is so British — particularly since it's the first place they've gone to and they're doing key scenes there. 'For fans it's likely to be a sign that with American producers running the show, it might not be as mindful of Harry Potter as a national treasure that shouldn't be tampered with.'
