Sultan Ibrahim meets new IGP Mohd Khalid in JB
JOHOR BARU, June 29 – His Majesty the King, Sultan Ibrahim, today granted an audience to newly appointed Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail. The King's Facebook page indicated that the meeting took place in Johor Baru, with Johor Police Chief Datuk M Kumar also in attendance. Sultan Ibrahim also serves as the Honorary Commissioner of the Royal Malaysia Police. Earlier this month, Mohd Khalid was appointed as the 15th IGP on a two-year contract beginning June 23, 2025. Prior to his new appointment, the 60-year-old served as director of the Special Branch and retired on April 8 but was reappointed on a contract basis from that date until now. He replaced Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, who stepped down from the post after a two-year term.

Johor police dismantle RM7.1 million drug syndicate in double raid, arrest three suspects including two Vietnamese women
JOHOR BARU, June 23 — Johor police have successfully busted a drug trafficking syndicate believed to have been active since the beginning of this year through two separate raids in residential areas around Johor Baru, with the value of the seizure estimated to exceed RM7.1 million. Johor police chief CP Datuk M Kumar said the special operation was carried out by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) of the Johor police contingent headquarters with Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division, at about 7.30 pm, between June 14 and 15. He said that in the first raid at a two-storey terrace house in Taman Mutiara Rini, police arrested a 45-year-old local man believed to be the mastermind along with a 34-year-old Vietnamese woman. 'As a result of the inspection, police seized 2.67 kilogrammes of powder believed to be ecstasy and 368 grammes of drugs suspected to be marijuana,' he said in a press conference today. Following the arrest, police launched a second raid on another terrace house about a kilometre from the first location, which had also been rented by the same male suspect since May 2024 and arrested a 23-year-old Vietnamese woman. 'In this second raid, police seized 38 kg of ecstasy powder and 1.37 kg of ketamine,' he said. In both raids, police also seized two cars worth RM190,000, cash RM49,150 and various jewellery worth RM17,630, with the total seizure amounting to RM265,615. He said the two foreign women were believed to have entered the country legally, but further investigations were being conducted into their travel documents. The syndicate is believed to operate in an organised manner, including using social media and delivery via 'runners' and police believe there are still members at large out there and investigations are underway to track them down. He said that apart from being used as a residence, the first house is believed to be used as a place to store drugs, while the second house is a location to package the drug powder into small packets which are believed to be sold in the local market for RM250 to RM350. Kumar said urine tests showed that the man involved tested positive for methamphetamine while the two foreign women tested positive for ketamine and benzodiazepines. All of them have been remanded until June 26 for further investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. — Bernama

Johor oil store fire: Nine out of 10 affected premises lacked valid licences, says JB City Council
JOHOR BARU, June 22 — The Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) has identified 10 premises operated by different companies within the site of a fire at a lorry and engine oil storage facility in Jalan Cenderai, Taman Kota Puteri, Masai, covering an estimated area of 64,664 square metres. Johor Baru Mayor Datuk Mohd Haffiz Ahmad said investigations found that only one of the premises, a palm oil storage facility, had been licensed by the council and the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB). He said the remaining businesses, including a car wash, vehicle parking, a used items dealer, and workshops, were found to be operating without valid licences, and the council would take further action against those involved. 'The land was leased to these premises, but we found only the palm oil storage facility to be licensed. Therefore, MBJB will take further action, including requesting the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) to act, especially since one of the tenants deals in scrap materials,' he told reporters after visiting the scene today. Earlier, Bernama's check at the scene found that the road leading to the fire site had been cordoned off by authorities. Members of the public were seen gathering in the area since early this morning to view the aftermath of the blaze. The Fire and Rescue Department's Operations Centre (JBPM) received an emergency call about the incident at 12.54 pm yesterday, and 34 personnel with assets from multiple fire stations, including auxiliary units, were deployed to the location. Five premises were affected in the fire, which destroyed an area of about 1,000 square metres and 15 vehicles. — Bernama

Thick smoke and explosions reported as Johor Baru factory burns (VIDEO)
KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 — An oil storage facility caught fire at Taman Megah Ria in Johor Baru earlier today. The blaze, which broke out around 12.30pm, sent thick black smoke soaring over 100 metres into the air, intensified by hot weather and strong winds. About 60 per cent of the premises was destroyed in fire, but no casualties reported, according to the Johor Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba). Residents in the vicinity were ordered to evacuate their homes as a safety precaution and electricity supply in the affected area was cut off to prevent any untoward incidents. According to Berita Harian, several small explosions occurred around 2pm, with oil drums seen flying through the air due to the blasts. Bomba is actively working to bring the fire under control.

Packed bays, stalled trade: JB businesses suffer as Singapore-bound workers hog city parking from dawn to night
JOHOR BARU, June 20 – Parking woes in downtown Johor Baru have reportedly been made worse by Malaysians working in Singapore, who leave their vehicles in public bays before heading across the Causeway. The Straits Times reported that businesses such as kopitiams and sundry shops have struggled to retain customers who are unable to find parking, while enforcement officers regularly tow away vehicles parked illegally on the roadside. 'A task force has been set up to study the issue involving the two city councils,' state housing and local government exco Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor was quoted saying, referring to Johor Baru and Iskandar Puteri, in response to rise in complaints from residents and business owners about the matter. 'We are closely monitoring this issue that has been raised by fellow state assemblypersons and the local business community... where motorists hog parking bays all day till late at night, causing disruption to local businesses here as customers cannot find a lot to park their vehicles.' Local authorities have so far considered measures including parking time limits and increasing parking bays, along with collaborations with bus operators to reduce congestion. With over 350,000 people crossing the border daily, transit points such as Skudai and downtown Johor Baru often see full car parks, sometimes occupied by workers in rotating shifts. ST reported that even private parking lots are packed, with 80 per cent of lots near Galleria Kotaraya taken by Singapore-bound workers. Businesses can pay RM150 monthly to reserve customer spots — but other drivers still violate these spots. This has caused businesses to resort to 'reserving' spaces with their personal vehicles to carry out their trade, citing the impossibility of working without them. ST cited experts pointing to poor urban planning, car dependence, and lack of last-mile connectivity between housing areas and cross-border transit points as root causes. Low parking fees were also to blame: parking in the city costs as little as 40 sen per 30 minutes, while full-day passes are just RM6, and private bays priced at up to RM20 per day. Long-term solutions include a RM2.6 billion development near Bukit Chagar RTS station with a 1,550-lot park-and-ride facility, and a proposed light rail system linking townships to the cross-border train service set for 2027.
