Unexploded World War II bomb weighing over 200 kg found in Melaka plantation

Photo: Johor Police Contingent FB MALAYSIA: A suspected bomb has been found in Melaka, Malaysia, after a land clearing worker stumbled upon it while working at an oil palm plantation in Felda Bukit Senggeh on Monday afternoon (Jul 14). The discovery was made around 1:47 p.m., according to Malaysian daily The Star, and the police dispatched a bomb disposal team from the police headquarters to inspect the object. Following an initial investigation, police confirmed that the item was an old unexploded bomb (UXB), estimated to weigh more than 200 kilograms. The device, thought to be a 500-pound aerial bomb, had likely remained buried for decades. 'After inspection, the bomb was confirmed to be an old unexploded ordnance from World War II, weighing nearly 500 pounds (about 226 kilograms),' local police said in a statement. Authorities have since secured the area, and the bomb was neutralised through a controlled explosion today (Jul 15), in line with standard operating procedures. Officers from the Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) carried out the controlled explosion at about 1 p.m., using a low-order disposal approach known as the Vulcan Shape Charge technique that involves firing a specialised charge designed to pierce and disable the explosive safely without triggering a full detonation. See also Dr Mahathir: Malaysia has to preserve unique multi-cultural values Authorities said no injuries were reported during the operation, and the area was declared secure after the disposal. Unexploded ordnance and UXBs are explosive weapons that did not explode when they were deployed and remain at risk for detonation. UXBs from past wars can remain volatile for decades and may still pose a serious risk of detonation if disturbed. Cops bust online sextortion syndicate in Johor

Johor police chief M Kumar said the raids saw the seizure of 27 mobile phones, identity cards, flight tickets, money exchange receipts, laptops, 49 SIM cards and a modem, among others. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The police have busted a syndicate that used sexual blackmail tactics to prey on its victims with the arrest of nine suspects, including two women and a teenager. Berita Harian reported that the suspects, aged 17 to 50 years old, were arrested in an operation from June 20 to July 1 around Johor Bahru and Kulai in Johor. Johor police chief M Kumar said the syndicate, which had been operating since last November, had its female members create fake social media accounts to entice its victims into making lewd video calls. He said they would then send the victim a mobile link, which would access the victim's photo gallery and contact list when clicked. 'The syndicate persuaded its victims to commit lewd acts on video calls, which would be recorded and used to blackmail them for money. 'The victims were generally forced to make payments of RM500 to RM1,000, and threatened with the distribution of their lewd videos to their contacts, including their family,' he said. Kumar said the syndicate also recruited non-schooling teenagers on social media as workers, paying them RM2,200 to RM4,000. He said they would be trained before being forced to work in other countries, such as Indonesia, Laos, and Thailand. The raids saw the rescue of three such victims, aged 15 to 16 years old. 'These teenagers would be locked up and forced to work 12 hours a day, and beaten if they refused to cooperate. 'Though they were given two-week breaks, their movements were still controlled and their mobile phones and identity cards confiscated. 'Those looking to quit would have to pay RM30,000 to be set free,' he said. Kumar said the raids saw the seizure of 27 mobile phones, identity cards, flight tickets, money exchange receipts, laptops, 49 SIM cards and a modem, among others. The suspects in custody, including the mastermind, are being investigated under the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, as well as the National Registration Regulations 1990, Passport Act 1966, Penal Code and Societies Act 1966.

Johor police probe shooting at petrol station, links to body with multiple gunshot wounds dumped at hospital

SINGAPORE: Johor police are investigating a shooting incident at a petrol station in Iskandar Puteri, and its possible link to a body with multiple gunshot wounds that was left at a hospital in the early hours of Thursday (Jul 3) morning. Johor police chief M Kumar said in a statement that the authorities were alerted to a man's body left at Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Bahru at about 1.40am on Thursday. The body had no identification documents and closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed the deceased was left at the hospital by two individuals in a dark coloured car, he said in a statement posted on Johor police's Facebook page on Friday. A post-mortem conducted confirmed that the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen. Fingerprint records identified the victim as a 42-year-old Indian male from Sungai Petani in Kedah. The deceased was also found to have previous criminal records, Kumar said in his statement. Initial police investigations showed that before the body was discovered, a suspected robbery attempt had happened at a Shell petrol station in Gelang Patah at about 12.12am. A group of men armed with knives had attacked another group of men, one of whom was armed with a gun, which resulted in gunfire, the statement added. CCTV footage circulating on Facebook and WhatsApp showed a silver car driving up to a black Honda parked at a petrol station. A group of four men holding machetes exited the car and began smashing the windows of the Honda. A series of gunshots could then be heard, before the four men fled, three in their car and one on foot. Three men were later seen coming out of the Honda, before two of them drove off in it. Based on the information they gathered, officers from the Johor police's Criminal Investigation Department and the Iskandar Puteri district police headquarters arrested three suspects in the Dang Wangi area in Kuala Lumpur. The suspects are two Malaysians and one Indian national, aged between 30 and 40. A Glock 19 pistol, a firearm licence, a magazine containing six 9mm bullets, a black Honda Accord and spent shell casings were seized during the arrest, according to the police chief's statement. Kumar said one of the suspects works as a personal bodyguard and preliminary investigations found that he holds a firearm licence. However, further investigations will be conducted to determine the legitimacy of the firearm ownership. All three suspects have been remanded for seven days from Jul 4 to Jul 10 to assist with ongoing investigations, which include determining the victim's connection to the suspects and both incidents. The case is currently being investigated for murder, rioting with weapons and for discharging a firearm outside a shooting range. The police are still working on tracking down the other suspects who are still at large, said Kumar. He urged the public not to speculate or make comments that could interfere with the investigation or distort the facts, especially on social media. 'This is an isolated incident. There is no broader threat to public safety, and Johor remains secure,' he said.

Body with gunshot wounds found following video of JB petrol station shooting

A dramatic video showing a shooting at a Johor Bahru petrol station has gone viral - and just hours later, a man's body bearing gunshot wounds was found at a local hospital. The video, widely circulated online, shows a black car pulling into a petrol station in Gelang Patah - a rest stop near the Second Link frequently visited by Singapore drivers. While the vehicle is parked in a corner, a silver car pulls up and four masked men in black baseball caps emerge and begin hacking at the car's right windows. Gunshots ring out from inside the black car, prompting the attackers to flee - three of them scrambling back into their car, while the fourth runs out of the station and disappears from view. The incident happened at 12.12am on July 3. About 90 minutes later, at 1.40am, the body of a man with gunshot wounds to his chest and abdomen was left at the emergency department of Sultanah Aminah Hospital, said Johor Police, according to The Star. The police are now attempting to establish links between the dead man and those involved in the recorded incident. Johor police chief M. Kumar said in a statement on July 4 that CCTV footage from the hospital showed two individuals dropping off the body in a dark-coloured car before leaving. Fingerprint analysis identified the deceased as a 42-year-old man from Kedah with four previous convictions. A post-mortem has confirmed that the man died from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen. Mr Kumar added that initial investigations led to the arrests of three suspects between the ages of 30 and 40 - two Malaysians and an Indian national - in Dang Wangi, Kuala Lumpur, at around 7pm on the same day. The operation was conducted by a joint team from Johor police headquarters and the Iskandar Puteri district police. Among the items seized were the upper receiver of a Glock 19 pistol, a licensed firearm permit, six rounds of 9mm bullets, bullet casings and a black car. According to the police chief, one suspect works as a licensed personal bodyguard. While he possesses a firearms licence, authorities are still investigating the ownership of the seized pistol and whether it was used legally. The case is being investigated for murder, rioting with weapons and discharging a firearm outside of a designated firing range. "This is an isolated incident. There is no broader threat to public safety, and Johor remains secure," said Mr Kumar.
