'Amazing Race Canada' Season 11: Eliminated cousins held up by navigation challenges in Alberta
We're only on the first episode of The Amazing Race Canada Season 11 (Tuesdays at 9:00 p.m. ET on CTV, and the CTV app), but there have already been plenty of thrills. As Jon Montgomery greeted the 11 competing teams for the first time, beginning the race in Alberta, one team fell too far behind to stick around. The challenges in the first episode included rappelling over the side of the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. Then the racers had to choose a Detour, either blindfolded pottery or fencing. That was followed by the teams going to the Canyon Ski Resort in Red Deer to ride the Canyon Coaster, tasked with having to guess the time it took to run the track. And finally, learn a line dance routine with members of the Country Pride Dance Group. Unfortunately, cousins Michele Peter and Aditi Deonarine faced navigation difficulties between each of the challenges, and had to leave the race. "I think the most difficult part of the race is not necessarily the challenge, but it was the navigation and the driving," Aditi told Yahoo Canada. "For the both of us, I know that's not the biggest strength of ours, even though we prepped as much as we could." "We had a map, we were trying to study beforehand, we had no access to GPS, any kind of electronics. We stopped and asked for help along the way, we were given incorrect directions." "We had a dad and a child, the first person who we asked, and the child was just restless and was like, 'Dad, let's keep going.' And we're just like, 'No, we've got to keep going before you go, ... so please give us the proper directions," Michele added. "And then I think at one point, at the final stretch of the leg, after the line dancing, I don't think some people were even sober. ... These are not reliable sources of information." This isn't the first time the cousins have competed on TV, after previously participating in Family Feud Canada, but they have a close connection to Amazing Race. "My dad, who sadly is no longer with us, he was like Amazing Race Canada's biggest fan," Michele shared. "And both our families love the show." "We've had such hectic lives and such personal tragedies that we didn't have time, but finally we were able to come together united." While they weren't on the show for a long time, they could still tell that best friends Jesse Harink and Jonathon Braun are a strong team. "They seemed [to be] not just hilarious characters, which we enjoy, because Michele and I are always cracking jokes and we don't take ourselves too seriously, but they seemed to be extremely intelligent, extremely athletic and fit, very competent racers," Aditi said. "So I think Michele and I gravitated towards Jonathon and Jesse just because they were just full of so many strengths and skills." Getting the opportunity now to share their Amazing Race Canada journey with friends and family, the cousins see it as an "unforgettable experience." "From the feedback and the comments that we're getting, it's great to inspire young women as well and diverse groups, and it's great to be ambassadors and an [allies] for those who need it," Michele said. "It's just really good to inspire others, the next generation, all my nieces and nephews and little cousins, and show that there can be representation in the media with South Asian women from all different populations," Aditi added. "Amazing Race Canada does such a good job of being very equitable and inclusive, ... so we were just so excited to be part of the franchise."

'Amazing Race Canada' Season 11 host Jon Montgomery teases 'big time' competitive racers and dramatic season
Even in Season 11, The Amazing Race Canada (Tuesdays at 9:00 p.m. ET on CTV, and the CTV app) has more ways to surprise and delight its audience. Hosted by Jon Montgomery, 11 teams race across Canada to win the coveted title of the show's champions, along with two 2025 Chevrolet Blazer EV SS, a trip around the world, and a $250,000 cash prize courtesy of Fuze Iced Tea. The big question each season is how the racers compare to past seasons. Montgomery revealed that this year's teams are "big time" competitive. "Episode 1 you'll see some dramatic stuff that's never happened before on The Amazing Race Canada, and you can see the level of competitiveness, excitement for what lays ahead, and disregard for whatever strife might be encountered as a result of some choices, perhaps," he shared with Yahoo Canada. From a competitors standpoint, one team to look out for is Brendan McDougall and Sam May, both previous Amazing Race Canada racers, in different seasons, with different partners. After Sam appeared in Season 10, Brendan (Season 8) slid into her DMs, and now they're back for a second chance at the race as a couple. "I never get to see racers from previous seasons come back, and to be there once again to share the experience, and to capture it for everybody's viewing pleasure, ... what a brilliant piece of television," Montgomery said. "Who knows where things will go. Maybe it could be the first relationship that goes the distance on The Amazing Race Canada." While race has gone to so many places in Canada, in Season 11 the racers are headed to the Arctic Circle. "We get to go to the coastline of our third ocean, and truly be able to say from coast to coast to coast on The Amazing Race Canada," Montgomery highlighted. "Everybody in production was just tickled pink that we were able to go and do this. ... With this backdrop, with this scenery, it was just such a privilege to be able to use it and to engage with the people who get to live there. It was brilliant." But Montgomery still has one place he wants to see on the show, Alert in Nunavut, the northernmost permanently inhabited place in the world. "If you want to go to the edges, to the fringes, you got to go there," Montgomery said. "I don't think The Amazing Race Canada will ever take us to Alert, but that's one place that I can say is bucket list." "We would have to spend a week probably just getting ourselves to Alert, and then once we got there, quick run around the buildings that exist in Alert would probably have exhausted all of the physical infrastructure that we could use." For Canadians tuning into Amazing Race Canada this season, they'll be watching as tensions between Canada and the U.S. feel particularly high, with many Canadians responding by trying to support local businesses, tourism destinations and even entertainment. "Maybe there are more people out there that feel the same way that I do, which is to be Canadian puts me in an incredibly fortunate group of people in the entire world," Montgomery said. "And to take that for granted is a travesty, and maybe what's happened elsewhere has brought more people to the boat that I'm sailing on, and I have always been sailing on." "I feel like there's more people here on team pride right now than there ever has been. ... And if it gives us an uptick in viewership, if the places that we're visiting experience an uptick in tourism as a result of this type of a sentiment, then that's the best thing that could have ever happened." But Montgomery also highlighted that the continued popularity of The Amazing Race Canada really comes down to the whole crew involved in putting each season together. "We get to be surrounded by people that are the best at their craft while we make the Amazing Race Canada," he said. "All these people continually want to level up and bring to the audience more polished, more refined, better shots, better edited, on every aspect. And so the the show and the finished product continues to level up." But the question still remains, would Montgomery move from host to racer? He's definitely interested. "Gordie Howe coached and played at the same time. I don't know why I can't host and race at the same time," he said. "I have no idea what I'm in for every day I wake up on The Amazing Race anyway. ... I think I could do it." The Amazing Race Canada premieres in Edmonton, travels to Red Deer
Edmontonians will see some familiar sights as Season 11 of The Amazing Race Canada kicks off Tuesday in Alberta's capital. Edmontonians will see some familiar sights as Season 11 of The Amazing Race Canada kicks off Tuesday in Alberta's capital. The show's host Jon Montgomery talks about the Alberta contestants this season, including Oilers Superfan Magoo. The Amazing Race Canada will kick-off its 11th season at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, returning to where last season finished and crowned season 10 champions Taylor and Katie in their hometown. Three Alberta teams will be part of this season's roster, including Edmonton's Blair Gladue and his wife Skylene. Gladue is better known as Superfan Magoo, who is often seen hyping up fans at Oilers games. Jon Montgomery, the host of the competition and former Olympic gold-medallist, said the 'dynamite couple' will add to the appeal of the show. 'Anytime you get a husband and a wife team that are as deeply connected as these two are, that's compelling television for me because you know that they're probably going to have come-aparts,' he told CTV News Edmonton in an interview on Tuesday morning. 'Then watching them come back together, as good couples do, is the secret sauce.' (Credit: Amazing Race Canada) The other Albertans featured this season will be Jesse from Sherwood Park and a pair of brothers, Osas and Esosa, from Calgary. The first episode will see the racers travel from Edmonton to Red Deer. 'The locals are maybe going to have a little bit of home province advantage,' Montgomery teased about Tuesday's episode, adding that he had called Alberta home for 14 years. 'I was tickled pink to come back and reminisce about old times, but also capture something and showcase it and present it to the rest of the country (and) to show what it is that I love so much about an area.' The Amazing Race Canada will also feature new racers, like its first grandmother, and new destinations - finally making it north of the Arctic Circle and reaching the third coastline in the Arctic Ocean. 'We've always said 'coast to coast to coast,' but I guess until this year we've been lying because we haven't technically been to the Arctic Ocean yet,' Montgomery said. 'We will now.' Season 11 was filmed in April. The winners will receive $250-thousand in cash, a trip for two around the world, and two brand new Chevrolet Blazer EV SS cars. The season premiere will air on CTV July 8 at 9 p.m. local time.
