34 bodies found after tourist boat capsizes during storm in Vietnam
A tourist boat capsized during a severe storm in Vietnam's Hạ Long Bay on Saturday, July 19, resulting in at least 34 people dying, according to state media. The boat, with 53 people aboard, tipped over at around 2 p.m. local time, as Storm Wipha approached Vietnam across the South China Sea. Lightning, heavy rainfall and strong winds were reported in the area. The vessel had lost its GPS signal by 2:05 p.m., according to the Quang Ninh Provincial People's Committee, per local newspaper VnExpress. The majority of tourists on the boat were from Vietnam's capital, Hanoi, VnExpress reported. The nationality of the tourists aboard the vessel was not officially announced as emergency crews continued looking for survivors. Rescuers found 11 survivors, while 34 bodies have been recovered so far, including eight children, the state-run Vietnam News Agency said, citing local authorities. There are eight people still unaccounted for, authorities added. Storm causes flight delays at Noi Bai Airport Hạ Long Bay, around 125 miles northeast of Hanoi, attracts tens of thousands of visitors and tourists each year, with the boat tours being especially popular. Storm Wipha, which is now the third typhoon to hit the South China Sea so far this year, is expected to make landfall along Vietnam's northern coast early next week. Severe weather caused by the storm also disrupted air travel in the country. Noi Bai Airport confirmed that nine arriving flights were diverted to other airports, and three departing flights were temporarily grounded on Saturday, July 19. Reuters contributed to this story. Artisanal bread sold at Kroger, Walmart voluntarily recalled
Hartford Bakery is voluntarily recalling hundreds of loaves of one of its artisanal breads because the products may contain undeclared hazelnuts, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) said. Out of an abundance of caution, the company, headquartered in West Hartford, Connecticut, issued a recall for its 'Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style 1/2 Loaf' on July 10, according to the FDA. The company warns that "people with a nut allergy or severe sensitivity to hazelnuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions" if they consume the bread. Hartford Bakery said it had removed all products linked to the six affected production lots. The recalled bread was distributed in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee and Wisconsin retailers, including Kroger and Walmart, according to the FDA. The FDA said there had been no major reports of injury or illness related to the recalled bread. "Hartford Bakery is aware of one customer who experienced digestive discomfort after consumption," the recall reads. "Hartford Bakery also received consumer complaints from those who saw the nuts before consuming the product." What does the recalled artisanal bread look like? The recalled bread comes in a flexible plastic bag marked with the following information: How was the undeclared allergen found? Hartford Bakery initiated the recall after finding that about 883 loaves of bread from six production lots contained visible hazelnuts and were distributed in 'Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style 1/2 Loaf' packaging. Although the packaging reads "May Contain Tree Nuts," it does not say that it "Contains Hazelnuts." An investigation by the company revealed that an error in packaging led to the allergen being undeclared. Jonathan Limehouse covers breaking and trending news for USA TODAY. 2 $1 million lottery prizes go unclaimed in Virginia, Idaho
Winning the lottery is a dream scenario for many, apparently, except for two lucky ticket holders who didn't claim their jackpots and missed their chance to become millionaires. Officials with the Idaho Lottery and the Virginia Lottery confirmed to USA TODAY that two $1 million prizes went unclaimed with their claiming period expiring on Monday, June 30. The ticket in Virginia won the state's New Year's Millionaire Raffle drawing on Jan. 1, 2025, while the ticket in Idaho is from last winter's Idaho $1,000,000 Raffle. The unclaimed prize in Idaho became the fourth $1 million winning draw ticket in the state's lottery history to go unclaimed and the first in more than a decade. Now that the prizes have gone unclaimed, Idaho officials said the funds will go toward the state's public schools and the 'State of Idaho's permanent buildings – like those on our college campuses.' In Virginia, the money will go into the state's Literary Fund, which officials said provides low-interest loans to cities for 'public school construction, renovations and technology upgrades.' Where can you buy lottery tickets? Tickets can be purchased in person at gas stations, convenience stores and grocery stores. Some airport terminals may also sell lottery tickets. Frito-Lay plant in Rancho Cucamonga shutting down manufacturing operations
Frito-Lay plant in Rancho Cucamonga shutting down manufacturing operations "We are truly grateful for all the support over the last five decades from our Rancho Cucamonga manufacturing team as well as the local community," PepsiCo Foods U.S.'s statement says. Show Caption Hide Caption How to reseal bags with sealer Reseal bags with ease using a sealer. Problem Solved, USA TODAY A Frito-Lay plant in Southern California is shuttering manufacturing operations after five decades, potentially affecting hundreds of jobs. A statement from PepsiCo Foods U.S., emailed to USA TODAY on June 11, confirmed the "shutdown of manufacturing operations" at Frito-Lay's Rancho Cucamonga site. Although the plant will cease manufacturing operations, its warehouse, distribution, fleet and transportation teams will continue to operate at this location, according to the food, beverage and snack corporation. "We are truly grateful for all the support over the last five decades from our Rancho Cucamonga manufacturing team as well as the local community," PepsiCo Foods U.S.'s statement reads. "We are committed to supporting those impacted through this transition and we are offering pay and benefits to impacted employees." According to Frito-Lay, it has "more than 30 highly advanced manufacturing plants across the country." Is a pricey AI fridge worth it? One woman's rant about hers is going viral. How many Frito-Lay Rancho Cucamonga plant employees may be laid off? PepsiCo did not disclose how many employees would be affected by the shutdown of the manufacturing plant. It is also unclear when the possible layoffs will occur, as the PepsiCo facility is not in California's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) database as of June 11. The WARN Act requires employers to give 60 days' notice before a mass layoff, plant closure or relocation. Employees at the plant told KTLA that they were let go, with some not being allowed to transfer to different departments to possibly keep their jobs. The Frito-Lay Rancho Cucamonga facility also once employed Richard Montañez, an American businessman who took credit for inventing Flamin' Hot Cheetos, although the snack brand and PepsiCo have disputed his claims.
