Jonathan Smith provides injury update of Spartans on opening day of preseason fall camp
Head coach Jonathan Smith provides an injury update on the Spartans on the first day of fall camp In the words of Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith, the Spartans are starting fall preseason camp in a "solid" spot on the injury front. Michigan State opened up fall preseason camp on Tuesday, with the Spartans holding their first practice of the 2025 season. As part of fall camp opening, media was able to attend a brief portion of practice and have availability to ask questions to a number of players and Smith. One of the typically asked questions during this time of year is the injury status of the team, which Smith was able to provide a positive response. "I'd say solid," Smith said when asked about the overall team health of the Spartans. "Knock on wood, but we haven't came across the season-ending injury (or anything) to that extent. We definitely are being, I'll call it, smart with some guys in camp and we will ease them into it. But currently, we are feeling pretty solid." Now, preseason camp has just started so, of course, we are only dipping our toes into the injury front at this time. But, this is certainly reassuring knowing there aren't any offseason injuries that Smith and the Spartans were ready to announce on opening day of fall camp. This is a notable development as we get going on the 2025 season. Throughout fall camp, injuries will be something to monitor so stick with Spartans Wire for the latest updates. Hopefully, we don't have any news of any significant injuries before Michigan State takes the field on August 29 in the season opener against Western Michigan. Spartans talk about Jonathan Smith's leadership traits, 'brilliant football brain'
"He's definitely a brilliant football brain." That was what one of the three Spartans in attendance at Big Ten Football Media Days had to say about head coach Jonathan Smith. The leadership and ability to trust his staff were two notable items called out by a pair of Spartans during a round table discussion on the Big Ten Network's season preview show on Thursday from Las Vegas. "He gives the other coaches that authority," Spartans wide receiver Nick Marsh said. "He lets them take course for the team. We have a few other coaches that act like the head coach (as well)." "He's more of a reserved guy -- cool, calm and collective," Michigan State offensive lineman Stanton Ramil added. "When he really wants to make that point, it's definitely made. He's definitely a brilliant football brain." Smith is entering his second season as the Spartans head coach, with fans expecting a better outcome than year one under Smith. The Spartans failed to reach bowl eligibility, finishing the year with a 5-7 record. There seems to be more momentum, though, for Michigan State to bounce back this season and reach bowl eligibility for the first time since 2021. Michigan State football head coach announces camp will begin next
Michigan State football is gearing up for the 2025 season, the second in Jonathan Smith's tenure in East Lansing. After a 5-7 year in 2024, the Spartans are in need of a much improved year in 2025 in order to keep the Smith tenure on track. After what was a solid summer of strength and conditioning, building the MSU roster into being a bigger, faster and stronger players, it is time for the Spartans to get into the lab for fall camp and gear up for the massive season ahead. According to Smith, at media days, the Spartan team will be reporting for camp on Monday, with the first team practice taking place on Tuesday. That will give the Spartans roughly a full calendar month to prepare for their season opener on Aug. 29 against Western Michigan.
