Rhyl: Leading light in tennis & politics earns alumni award

Jonathon Dawes was recognised by King's College London (KCL) – and the wider British sporting community – for his pioneering contribution to tennis development and grassroots inclusion. The 22-year-old, already the youngest member of the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) Council, received a Distinguished Alumni Award from KCL, following in the footsteps of names such as Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Olympian Dina Asher-Smith. Having completed his A -Levels at Coleg Cambria's Deeside Sixth Form Centre in 2021 – where he achieved A*s in government and politics, economics, PE and the Welsh Baccalaureate – Jonathon moved to London to read philosophy, politics and economics. Jonathon Dawes (Image: Submitted) He has since returned to the college on several occasions to share his journey and inspire learners. 'It was Coleg Cambria that encouraged me to apply to university when I was considering other options, and I'm so glad they did,' he said. 'They nurtured my passion for tennis and gave me the confidence to think big.' While at KCL, Jonathon spent two years on its tennis committee and served as president in his final year, setting out an 'inclusive-by-design' vision to ensure every student could enjoy university life through tennis, increasing membership by 65 per cent and securing a partnership with global brand, Wilson. After graduating first-class with honours, he continued to volunteer with KCL Tennis, spearheading a programme which included its first LGBTQ+ tennis festival. In total, his post-graduation efforts have engaged 350+ students and unlocked more than £2,500 in new funding, while charity events have raised almost £1,000 for good causes. Jonathon is currently completing an MA in research methods for political science at Durham University. He will begin a PhD in September within the Department of Sport and Exercise Science, investigating politics and under-served communities in tennis. 'King's College London is a world-leading university, so to be recognised at such a young age is a huge honour,' he said. 'But this is only the beginning – I'm committed to making tennis more accessible for everyone, in Wales, the UK and beyond.'

Project Search graduates 10

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – 10 young adults celebrated a milestone! The interns graduated from the Project Search Program. Facilitated by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, Project Search gives young adults with disabilities hands-on internship opportunities with community businesses. Graduate Jacobn Johnson explains, 'My 1st rotation is Supply Chain Management. I stocked supply rooms in, like, the surgery center, ED, and also GI. And, I worked with my mentor Jonathon to restock everything in GI after it got flooded by a cut water pipe.' Mayo Clinic Talent Solutions Specialist Chelsey Steinbrecher added, 'It has been a proven workforce solution for us, truly. It's a grow-your-own, if you think about it, from start to finish of their program. We're building them up, we're training them, and at the end of the program, they're able to work.' Project Search started in 2008 and has helped over 2000 adults across the state of Wisconsin. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 'All about levels' - why Arsenal's season has been better than Spurs

We asked you whether you would swap Arsenal's season for Tottenham's given they have won the Europa are some of your comments:Jonathon: Levels! It is all about levels. Although trophies are the ultimate goal, as an Arsenal fan I'd rather be competing at a higher level for the big, but harder to win prizes than playing at a lower level competing for second-tier Asking to swap Arsenal's season for Spurs is sort of similar to asking to swap Arsenal's for Leeds. The competition Spurs won is a lower tier competition to the one Arsenal compete in. In winning the Europa, Spurs now get a seat at the same table as Arsenal but that's I thought this was a very easy question to answer as an Arsenal season ticket holder. I would not swap it. Basically because to finish second means I've enjoyed 80 percent of the games I've watched. I've walked away from the stadium generally happy. However, when I see the numbers, it makes me step back and think. Spurs fans have been distraught since October. Every weekend must have been a new low. But with those lows means the high they have now is super high. Tough one!Not an Arsenal fan? Find and follow your clubJan: Spurs have been an embarrassment this year. You could say by winning a trophy they have had a better season, but Arsenal reached a Champions League semi-final and finished second again so I would say Arsenal are better Spurs have won a trophy but let's be honest the Europa League is now a tinpot competition and in no way as prestigious as the Uefa Cup success back in the 80's. With the top five teams of most major leagues going in to the Champions League, it has left the Europa as an incredibly weak competition. Arsenal may not have won anything but they went close in the Champions League against the cream of Europe and will finish second in the league. That's a far greater achievement than winning a trophy where Spurs never faced a single top 100% no, I wouldn't swap our season. Arsenal are a couple of signings away from major trophies. They've shown they can dig deep if necessary. Ending up 17th in the league with so many losses is a telling sign of where Spurs currently are as a club.
