Steelers HC Mike Tomlin gives injury update on TE Jonnu Smith at training camp

The first practice of 2025 Steelers training camp is officially in the books — and while many new and familiar faces stole the show, Pro Bowl TE Jonnu Smith was notably absent from team drills, sparking buzz about any lingering health concerns. At Thursday's press conference, Steelers HC Mike Tomlin was asked about the status of Pittsburgh's newest tight end — and he downplayed the undisclosed injury as a short-term setback. "[Jonnu Smith] can just be described as day-to-day," Tomlin told reporters. "We'll get him out here, sooner rather than later, I'm sure." It remains to be seen what sort of injury Smith is dealing with, but more details surrounding the situation will likely come out as training camp continues to roll on in Latrobe. The Steelers recently acquired Smith and All-Pro CB Jalen Ramey from the Dolphins in exchange for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a late-round pick swap. Smith factors to play a major role on offense this upcoming season, potentially creating a three-headed TE monster with Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington — one that fans would love to see soon at camp. New Details Emerge on Steelers CB Jalen Ramsey's Contract

New details have emerged on Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsy's contract. According to Spotrac, Ramsey's contract with the Steelers is now a four-year, $84.7 million deal that includes $19.5M fully guaranteed (all in 2025). Ramsey carries a $4.904 million cap hit in 2025, and $3.5M of his 2026 salary is guaranteed for injury only. The Steelers landed Ramsey and Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith in the blockbuster trade on June 30 with the Miami Dolphins. The deal will go down as one of the biggest in team history, with All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick going the other direction. The Steelers also acquired a 2027 seventh-round draft pick and the Dolphins got a 2027 fifth-round draft pick in the trade. The Steelers are also giving Ramsey a raise in 2025, increasing his salary to $26.6 million, and giving Smith a one-year contract extension worth $12 million. Ramsey is under contract through 2028. The extension will keep Smith in Pittsburgh through the end of the 2026 season. Ramsey, 30, has been one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL over the last decade. He is a three-time first-team All-Pro in 2017, 2020 and 2021, and a seven-time Pro Bowler from 2017-23. He won Super Bowl LVI with the Los Angeles Rams after the 2021 season. Initially drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Florida State, Ramsey has now been traded three times, first to the Rams in 2019, then to the Dolphins in 2023 and now to the Steelers. Ramsey was traded to the Dolphins in 2023, and signed a three-year contact extension with the team in September 2024, but this spring both Ramsey and the team mutually agreed to part ways. The Dolphins needed to wait until after June 1 to make a trade. New Steelers TE Jonnu Smith shares honest feelings on playing in Pittsburgh

Roll out the red carpet — Jonnu Smith is a Pittsburgh Steeler, and no one's more excited than the Steel City's newest tight end himself. On July 11's episode of the Zach Smackz Show, Smith was asked to share his honest feelings on joining HC Mike Tomlin and Aaron Rodgers in Pittsburgh. And judging by his response, he's thrilled to be a Steeler. "You check all the boxes," Smith said. "What more do you want? You basically check all the boxes. You're going up there, like you said, to a historic franchise with a historic coach, with a historic QB, you know what I'm saying? If God ain't have his hands on that, you know what I mean? To be in that position, I'm humbled, I'm honored. I'm ready to get up there and get to work." Smith is coming off a breakout season in 2024 — posting 884 receiving yards and eight touchdowns on 88 receptions — earning the first Pro Bowl selection of his career. Pittsburgh's new tight end is clearly excited to start building chemistry with his four-time MVP quarterback in Rodgers — who's been staying busy this July, as seen in his Malibu workout session with Steelers pass catchers and his recent attendance at this year's American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament, the latter of which went viral for all the wrong and hilarious reasons.
