Brock Boeser says last-minute deal with Vancouver Canucks ‘was meant to be'

(AP Photo/Jeff Roberson, file) On the morning of July 1, Vancouver Canucks forward Brock Boeser went to the gym, hoping to take his mind off the monumental decision he was about to make. His contract with the Canucks was up, and there were several other teams eager to add the pending free agent to their roster. 'In my head, I think I was fully set on going somewhere else. And so I had a list of teams in my head that I thought maybe would be a good fit,' said Boeser. But when he thought of leaving Vancouver? 'I just still was kind of uneasy about everything.' As his agent fielded offers from interested teams, Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin called. 'That phone call kind of came out of nowhere, so it was definitely a shock to me,' said Boeser. 'And I kind of raised my eyebrows. I was like, OK maybe we can figure something out here.' In late February, the Canucks reportedly offered Boeser a new five-year, $40-million contract that the 28-year-old rejected. He figured that was the best deal he was going to get from Vancouver. 'When they called back, I kind of lit up even after everything that's happened,' said Boeser. 'I just listened to it, and, you know, it felt right when they started talking and trying to figure out a deal. I just started getting excited. And I just knew it was meant to be.' Just minutes before officially becoming a free agent, Boeser inked a seven-year deal with the Canucks worth US$50.75 million. While the dollar amount and additional two years were big factors, it's clear the right winger wanted to stay in Vancouver. 'I've said so many times Vancouver feels like my second home. It's just so comfortable and I love it there. So maybe I can get a house there now,' Boeser said. He also spoke about his love for Canucks fans. 'They've been so supportive of me. Not just with hockey, but away from the rink and that means the world to me,' he said. 'Everyone's so kind outside when you're just out and about.' Boeser says he's eager to play under new head coach Adam Foote. 'We have a great relationship, and we've talked a lot and he was definitely a big reason why I wanted to come back, too. And I think he's going to be a great head coach,' Boeser said. He's also ready to turn the page after the turmoil of last season. 'Obviously, we all know that there's a lot of noise in that middle part of the year, and that was tough to play through. It's tough to focus, it's tough to get ready and compete every night,' he said. 'I think this year we can focus on really bonding as a group coming together and pushing for the same goal.'

Start of NHL's free agency expected to lack frenzy with many high-profile players off the board

(AP Photo/Jeff Roberson, file) No Mitch Marner. No Aaron Ekblad. No Brad Marchand. No frenzy? With a majority of the NHL's top-projected free-agent talent already off the market, the 32 teams face relatively slim pickings entering the league's annual signing period opening Tuesday at noon EDT. Advertisement A record $7.5 million jump in the NHL's salary cap led to many teams locking up their own talent to long-term deals in advance of free agency. The Vegas Golden Knights proved the big winners, acquiring Marner in a sign-and-trade deal agreed to Monday with Toronto to land free-agency's most prized player. And the two-time defending champion Florida Panthers took Ekblad and Marchand off the board by re-signing each to a lengthy contract. As the dust settled, the top players entering the market include forwards, Winnipeg's Nikolaj Ehlers and Vancouver's Brock Boeser, Los Angeles defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov, and New Jersey goalie Jake Allen. Teams are expected to turn to the trade route in bids to improve their rosters. The Buffalo Sabres are among the candidates to be involved in those moves, not ruling out the possibility of dealing 24-year-old defenseman Bowen Byram. Another, and older, defenseman, Erik Karlsson, could be on the move from Pittsburgh. And Minnesota Wild center Marco Rossi's name has come up in trade buzz. Advertisement By no means is this year's free agency period expected to generate the headline-grabbing moves made a year ago, when the Nashville Predators spent a combined $115 million in salary to secure forwards Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault, defenseman Brady Skjei and goalie Scott Wedgewood. But plenty of money is set to be spent. San Jose is nearly $20 million below the salary floor, and teams from Anaheim to Carolina and beyond have room under the cap to get better. ___ AP NHL:

Blues re-sign Joel Hofer: What the depth chart looks like heading into free agency

ST. LOUIS — For months, St. Louis Blues fans have been worried about goaltender Joel Hofer receiving an offer sheet. It wasn't unwarranted. The Edmonton Oilers need a goalie, and what could make them happier than retaliating against the Blues, who signed Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway away from them via offer sheets last August? Advertisement But if those same Blues fans were listening to general manager Doug Armstrong last week, they were likely less concerned. Armstrong was asked about Hofer's contract situation in his pre-NHL draft news conference and made it clear that the Blues were ready to match any offer sheet if they chose to do so. 'I guess this is my shot across the bow,' Armstrong said Monday. 'You can go after him. You're not going to get him.' Hofer, 24, would've become a restricted free agent and eligible for an offer sheet if unsigned by Tuesday. On Saturday, though, he signed a two-year, $6.8 million contract extension ($3.4 million average annual value). Joel Hofer isn't going anywhere. #stlblues DETAILS ➡️ — St. Louis Blues (@StLouisBlues) June 28, 2025 The Blues' goalie tandem for the 2025-26 season is now set with starter Jordan Binnington and Hofer at a combined $9.4 million AAV. Binnington has two seasons left on his six-year, $36 million contract ($6 million AAV). Hofer had a $775,000 AAV on his expiring two-year contract, so his new $3.4 million AAV will be a sizable raise. Interestingly, with Hofer getting a two-year deal, the contracts of both netminders will be set to expire the same summer, 2027. Hofer was 16-8-3 in 2024-25 with a 2.64 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage this past season. In the past two seasons combined, he has a 2.65 GAA and .909 save percentage, which rank eighth and 12th, respectively, amongst all NHL goalies (minimum 60 games played). The $3.4 million AAV is substantial for a backup, but Hofer has been heavily relied upon the past two seasons. In 2023-24, Binnington started 55 games and Hofer 27. In 2024-25, Binnington started 54 games and Hofer 28. The load distribution could be similar in 2025-26 with the NHL participating in the Olympics and a dense schedule expected, particularly post-Olympics. Pending restricted free agents: Nikita Alexandrov, Mikhail Abramov, Tanner Dickinson Pending unrestricted free agents: Radek Faksa, Mackenzie MacEachern, Corey Andonovski Roster hopefuls: Dalibor Dvorsky ($886,666), Zach Dean ($852,500), Dylan Peterson ($867,500) Pending restricted free agents: Hunter Skinner, Anton Malmstrom Pending unrestricted free agents: Ryan Suter Roster hopefuls: Matthew Kessel ($800,000), Corey Schueneman ($775,000), Adam Jiricek ($942,500) Pending restricted free agents: Vadim Zherenko Roster hopefuls: Colten Ellis ($775,000) Cap charges: $90,834,708 Projected bonus overages: $2,153,475 Projected salary cap: $92,988,183 Projected LTIR: $6,500,000 (Torey Krug's salary) Projected salary-cap space (when using LTIR): $9,011,817 Source: PuckPedia

Blues, Joel Hofer agree to 2-year, $6.8 million contract extension

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Blues have signed pending restricted free agent goaltender Joel Hofer to a two-year, $6.8 million contract extension ($3.4 million average annual value), the team announced Saturday. Hofer, 24, would have become an RFA if unsigned on July 1 and eligible to sign an offer sheet with another club. Advertisement Blues general manager Doug Armstrong indicated earlier this week that he wasn't worried about Hofer's contract situation. The team's fourth-round pick in 2018 had a $775,000 AAV on his expiring two-year contract, so he's receiving a sizable raise. Hofer was 16-8-3 in 2024-25 with a 2.64 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage. The Blues' goalie tandem is now set for the 2025-26 season, with starter Jordan Binnington having two more seasons left on his contract ($6 million AAV).
