Mixed injury news for Magpies as flag hunt continues
Collingwood forward Beau McCreery has been sidelined by another hamstring strain, but star midfielder Jordan De Goey is a chance to make his return against Richmond. De Goey has resumed full training after exiting concussion protocols and is listed as a "test" for Sunday's clash with the Tigers at the MCG. The explosive goal-kicker had previously battled achilles inflammation, which had sidelined him since the start of May. De Goey has played just five games this season, but could yet play a key part in Collingwood's premiership push. The ladder leaders are on a two-match losing skid, which has resulted in their lead being cut to two competition points, but will start hot favourites against third-from-bottom Richmond. McCreery reported hamstring concerns after he laid 15 tackles in last week's loss to Fremantle, and scans later revealed a low-grade strain. He will miss at least two matches, having sat out three with a similar issue before returning in the Dockers clash. The Magpies are hopeful key defender Billy Frampton (calf) and defensive playmaker Dan Houston (abdominal strain) will return from injuries against Richmond. Meanwhile, Hawthorn have confirmed it is season over for Finn Maginness, who sustained a lacerated kidney in last week's win over Port Adelaide. Maginness is still in hospital in Tasmania after what Hawks coach Sam Mitchell described as a "scary" injury. "He's feeling supported but feeling pretty ordinary, so unfortunately it means his season is going to be over from an on-field sense," Mitchell said. "That's probably at the back of our minds at the moment. "At the front is making sure he can get back to full health." Hawthorn young gun Will Day is set to make his long-awaited return from a foot injury in the clash with Carlton at the MCG on Thursday night.

AFL 2025: Collingwood will be without two experienced defenders for a fortnight
The defensive stocks of premiership favourite Collingwood have been dealt a blow after Jeremy Howe and Dan Houston were both sidelined through injury ahead of Friday's showdown with finals contender Fremantle. The Magpies are also unable to pinpoint a return date for destructive but injury hindered star Jordan De Goey. Howe suffered an adductor strain during Collingwood's loss to Gold Coast while following scans also revealed an abdominal concern for Houston. Both Howe and Houston, who have been key parts of the competition's leading defence, will miss the next fortnight. The loss of Houston means Josh Daicos is unlikely to run through the midfield where he produced one of the more impressive final quarters against the Suns. De Goey has returned to training from his concussion but will need to complete a minimum two week fitness block. Collingwood head of performance Jarrod Wade said De Goey's next fortnight would determine his timeline to return. 'Jordan De Goey will shortly complete his progression through concussion protocols and is set to commence a two-week training block,' Wade said. 'A return to play timeline will be determined once the training block is complete.' Norm Smith Medal winner Bobby Hill is also set to miss a fourth straight game as he deals with personal reasons and illness. 'Bobby Hill has missed the side's last three matches due to personal reasons and was unable to train last week due to illness,' Wade said. 'Hill returned to training over the weekend. His focus is on resuming full training before a timeline is placed on his return. 'The club continues to support Hill throughout this period.'

AFL 2025; Collingwood's Jordan De Goey suffers concussion at training
The impending return of defensive bull Brayden Maynard for Collingwood's Friday night showdown with Carlton was offset by a 'sad' concussion injury for Jordan De Goey, further setting back his return from injury. As he stepped up his rehab of an achilles injury, De Goey copped an accidental head knock early in a Tuesday morning training session, forcing him off the track, and he was subsequently put in to concussion protocols. Magpies coach Craig McRae labelled it a 'sad' setback for De Goey, who has only played 18 games since the Magpies' premiership triumph in 2023. He battled groin and abdominal injuries in 2024 before more injury disruptions this season. 'Jordy got a concussion in the fundamentals … it's a bit of a sad one for Jordy, he was just starting to get there,' McRae said. 'He's obviously going to be in the protocols for the next 10 to 14 days.' Jordan De Goey has suffered a concussion at training. Picture:But while De Goey's return has been delayed, McRae said Maynard was ready to return against the Blues after a longer than expected lay-off due to a plantar fascia injury that had sidelined him for the past five weeks. Veteran Steele Sidebottom has 'man flu' and could miss the Carlton clash, while Norm Smith medallist Bobby Hill remains a week-by-week prospect after being a late withdrawal from last Saturday night's win over West Coast for personal reasons. 'It was great to see Bobby back today … we haven't seen him around for a few days, and he's trained really well. We're excited to have him back,' McRae said. 'He's a day-to-day thing at the moment … we're not sure if he'll be available this week, but it's really great to see him back in the club.' Brownlow medallist Tom Mitchell could also make his season debut having played seven consecutive games in the VFL.
