Hot Angels plate 4 runs in 8th, shut out Braves
July 2 - The visiting Los Angeles Angels broke up a scoreless game with four runs in the eighth inning and beat the Atlanta Braves 4-0 on Tuesday in the opener of their three-game series. The Angels have won five of their last seven and pulled back to the .500 mark. The Braves have lost five of their last six and dropped to eight games below .500. With one out in the eighth, Mike Trout delivered a hustle double and Taylor Ward walked. Jo Adell then lined a changeup from reliever Dylan Lee (1-3) down the left-field line for a double to drive in the first run. Former Brave Jorge Soler greeted new pitcher Enyel De Los Santos with a double to drive in a pair, and pinch-runner Gustavo Campero scored on an RBI single by Luis Rengifo. A trio of Los Angeles relievers -- Jose Fermin (1-0), Reid Detmers and Kenley Jansen -- covered the final three innings to complete the team's fifth shutout. It was the seventh time Atlanta has been blanked this season. The starting pitchers both worked six scoreless innings. Atlanta's Grant Holmes allowed three hits, three walks and struck out 10 -- his second game with double-digit strikeouts -- and departed after throwing 106 pitches. LA's Tyler Anderson gave up four hits, two walks and seven strikeouts. Both teams wasted scoring opportunities. The Angels left the bases loaded in the fourth and stranded runners on the corners in the fifth. Atlanta got a leadoff triple from Michael Harris II in the fifth inning -- his first extra-base hit since June 20 -- but were unable to drive him home. Atlanta's Matt Olson had a hit and walk and extended his career-best on-base streak to 31 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the majors. The last Atlanta player to surpass 30 games was Freddie Freeman, who reach base in 33 straight in 2020. Jorge Soler activated by Angels for series against Braves, his former team
ATLANTA (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels activated outfielder Jorge Soler from the injured list before Tuesday night's game against the Atlanta Braves. Also Tuesday, the Braves acquired right-hander Hunter Stratton from the Pittsburgh Pirates for outfielder Titus Dumitru and cash. Stratton was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett. Advertisement Braves left-hander Chris Sale, on the 15-day injured list since June 21 because of a fractured left ribcage, was transferred to the 60-day IL. Soler had been out since June 18 with lower-back inflammation. Utility player Scott Kingery was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake. 'I feel great,' Soler said before the game through a translator. 'I'm ready to play." Soler was expected to return as the Angels' primary right fielder. His return occurred just in time for a visit to his former team. Los Angeles acquired Soler from the Braves last Oct. 31 Soler is hitting .207 with eight homers and 26 RBIs in 237 at-bats. Michael Harris returns to Braves lineup for opener against Angels
Weather permitting*, the Braves will kick off a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night. Atlanta is coming off a frustrating series loss to the Phillies and has lost 4 out of 5 after picking up some momentum in previous weeks. One step forward, one and a half steps back. *The forecast looks pretty terrible tonight. We might be headed for a rainout and doubleheader later this week. Advertisement On Tuesday, Michael Harris is set to return to the lineup after sitting out the two weekend games against Philadelphia. Harris' fourth year in the majors has been a catastrophe, ranking near the very bottom of the league in almost every stat of note. We'll see if the couple of days out of the lineup do any good. The rest of the lineup remains largely the same, with lefties Alex Verdugo and Drake Baldwin in there against lefty Tyler Anderson, who has pretty drastic reverse platoon splits.
