American artist offers apology to Scots during Trump visit
STORY: :: An American artist sets up an 'apology desk' in Scotland as Trump visits to open a golf course :: Aberdeen, Scotland :: July 27, 2025 :: Joseph Delappe, Artist "This is my way of dealing with my frustration, my anxiety, my anger and embarrassment about President Trump and what he's doing and the kind of slide towards authoritarianism in the United States. And, you know, I love Scotland. I love the people. I've felt so welcome here. But I really feel bad. I really feel like... it just kind of was this organic thing was like, oh, I should say I'm sorry." :: Yvonne English, Aberdeen resident "To be honest, I went over because I found it quite amusing that there was someone here with the US apologies desk, but actually listening to what Joseph was saying was pretty interesting. I sit on the same side of the fence in respect to how we feel about Trump and yeah, good chat with him." :: Richard Finlay Fletcher, Professor, Ohio State University "It was really special, actually, because we're visiting from the U.S., we live in Ohio and are American citizens. And as the artist said, like we don't apologize enough or we don't kind of reflect on what's happening with our country right now, and so bringing that to Scotland just feels really important." American-born DeLappe immigrated to Scotland during Trump's first term. The U.S. president arrived in Scotland on Friday (July 25), with hundreds of people on hand to watch the arrival in Glasgow of Air Force One, the presidential aircraft. He told reporters that he will visit his two golf properties in Scotland - one in Turnberry on the west coast and the other near Aberdeen.
