Joseph Fiennes held newlywed as she died after 'horrific' accident

Joseph Fiennes has detailed a shocking accident that saw him comfort a woman as she lay dying. The English actor, 55, is best known for playing William Shakespeare in the 1998 film Shakespeare in Love, Monsignor Timothy Howard in American Horror Story, and Commander Fred Waterford in The Handmaid's Tale. However, this week he recalled witnessing a distressing incident while on holiday in Costa Rica. Joseph was a guest on the Travel Secrets podcast, in which he spoke about his passion for horse riding, but how a ride during a past holiday took a tragic turn. 'I was staying at this wonderful hacienda at the foot of an old volcano,' he told host Tanya Rose. 'I love horse riding, and I got on to a horse early in the morning to go with a fellow traveller who was staying at the hacienda. 'She had just gotten married, and I remember getting up on the horse. It was getting quite hot, going into the shade, looking back, seeing this lovely woman kiss her husband goodbye, and then the horse reared up, and she sadly pulled on the reins and the weight of the horse came over and the whole horse landed on her and she fell back and really broke her head on the gravel and died.' The actor shared the story after being asked about one of his 'most unexpected' travel experiences. He went on to share it was 'the most unexpected, horrific accident, and in a moment of absolute beauty and joy and the sun and Costa Rica and horses'. 'In an instant you're reminded that anything can happen. I held her for a while; her poor husband was in such shock that he couldn't comprehend or communicate. And she slipped away. And I couldn't sleep for, God, I think a month.' Although Joseph did get back on a horse again during that holiday, he said he 'galloped and went hell for leather to get it out of my system'. 'But when I got back my dad did say, 'You can never be entirely sure how horses are trained'. Maybe it saw a snake, I don't know. Maybe it got scared of something. But it could be the way certain horses are trained, it can get beaten into submission a bit, they can be very temperamental so you have to be super careful.' Earlier this week, The Cosby Show star Malcolm-Jamal Warner tragically died while on a family holiday to the country in Central America. The 54-year-old actor began his career playing Theo Huxtable, the son of Bill Cosby's character Heathcliff Huxtable, on the sitcom from 1984 until 1992. On Sunday he was swimming with his family at a beach in Limon when he got into trouble while swimming and drowned. More Trending In a statement obtained by People, the Judicial Investigation Agency said: 'The victim appears to have entered the sea and was apparently swept away by a current. The man was rescued by bystanders and taken to shore, where he received treatment from the Costa Rican Red Cross. However, he was declared lifeless at the scene.' According to the outlet, his autopsy has now been completed, and the actor died from 'accidental asphyxiation by submersion'. He is survived by a wife and daughter, who he had chosen to keep out of the public eye. Got a story? EXCLUSIVE There's only one Gareth Southgate? Don't you believe it, writes KATIE HIND... As Joseph Fiennes is the spitting image of ex-England coach in TV remake of stage hit, do the other lookalikes match up?

He was widely praised for his 'almost AI-grade exactness' in playing Sir Gareth Southgate on stage. And as these pictures show, Joseph Fiennes, with his neat beard and focused expression, has lost none of his uncanny resemblance to the former England manager. The actor is reprising his role for the BBC adaptation of Dear England. Fiennes, 53, was seen on set for the first time as filming got under way this week for the highly-anticipated four-part series, which will air next year. The Shakespeare in Love star was spotted wearing an England training kit while recording scenes at top public school Harrow, which is being used for the squad's Staffordshire training ground, St George's Park. He was joined by former Doctor Who star, Jodie Whittaker, who is playing the team's psychologist Pippa Grange, and was seen wearing an official navy polo shirt. A cast of actors has also been hired to play various members of the England team, including Will Antenbring as Harry Kane, Edem-Ita Duke as Marcus Rashford, Francis Lovehall as Raheem Sterling, and Jacob Greenway as Jude Bellingham. Wayne Rooney will be played by Bobby Schofield, who most recently appeared in Liverpool-based drug mafia drama, This City Is Ours. Dear England has been adapted for television by James Graham, who also wrote the play, and tells the story of Sir Gareth's efforts to transform the team's performance and address the nation's long history of footballing disappointments – particularly penalty shootouts. The show begins with a flashback to 1996 when Sir Gareth missed a penalty in the Euro 96 semi-final defeat by Germany at Wembley. The plot charts the successes and failures of the men's team under Sir Gareth: the 2018 World Cup in Russia, when England reached the semi-finals, the 2020 European Championships which led to defeat in the final, and the team's quarter-final exit from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Mr Graham has confirmed that the TV show will also include Euro 2024, where the team made the final, only to be beaten by Spain, Southgate's last act as England manager before resigning. Much of the action will take place in the grounds of £75,000-a-year Harrow. Josh Barrow will feature as goalkeeping star Jordan Pickford Adam Hugill will feature as centre-back Harry Maguire Lewis Shepherd will star as Como player Dele Alli Hamish Frew will play Monaco's Eric Dier Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson will be played by David Shields Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier will be played by Michael Watson Further scenes were filmed at Wolverhampton Wanderers' ground Molineux last week, which is believed to be standing in for Wembley. The play premiered at the National Theatre in 2023 to five-star reviews, winning an Olivier award for Best New Play and enjoying a sell-out run. Joseph Fiennes was nominated for an Olivier award. It returned to the National Theatre earlier this year before embarking on a national tour. James Graham said bringing football to the stage had been 'one of the most rewarding moments of my writing life'.

Award-winning actor transforms into ex-England boss Gareth Southgate for TV mini-series – can you tell who the star is?

THIS award-winning actor transformed into ex-England boss Gareth Southgate for new TV mini series. The British actor, 55, was tried to keep a low profile as he was spotted on set BBC's adaption of James Graham's play Dear England. 9 9 9 The famous face will be taking on the role of Gareth in a four-part TV series. He was seen wearing a black polo shirt and a khaki cap back to front. But have you worked out who it is yet? It's Shakespeare in Love actor Joseph Fiennes. 9 9 9 9 He will be starring alongside Doctor Who's Jodie Whittaker, who is set to star as England men's team psychologist Pippa Grange. Another photo showed Joseph in a navy jacket with his thick beard, resembling former football star Gareth, 54. There are a number of other famous faces set to star. Jason Watkins from The Game joins the cast as former FA chairman Greg Dyke and The Bay's Daniel Ryan is former assistant manager for the England men's team Steve Holland. While Sam Spruell's The Gold plays fictional coach Mike Webster and John Hodgkinson reprises his Dear England stage role as former FA chairman Greg Clarke. In 2023, Joseph took on the role of portraying Gareth in a theatre production called Dear England. It chronicled Gareth's highs and lows during his seven-year spell as Three Lions boss. It was written by acclaimed playwright James Graham and takes its name from a letter Gareth penned to supporters before the Euro 2022 final. Ex-England defender Gareth was appointed national team boss in 2016 and led them to a World Cup semi and Euros final before this winter's last-eight showing at Qatar 2022. The Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy two years ago was England's first appearance in a major final since they won the World Cup on home soil in 1966. Gareth's missed shoot-out penalty in a Euro 1996 semi-final clash against Germany made him a household name for all the wrong reasons. Two years ago, his journey was recreated at the National Theatre for the public to enjoy. Joseph, who has starred in major films like Enemy At The Gates and Shakespeare in Love, attempted to do Gareth justice in the play. The play's synopsis said: "The country that gave the world football has since delivered a painful pattern of loss. "Why can't England's men win at their own game? "With the worst track record for penalties in the world, Gareth Southgate knows he needs to open his mind and face up to the years of hurt to take team and country back to the promised land." Joseph is the younger brother of Harry Potter and James Bond star Ralph Fiennes. Both his sisters, Martha and Sophie, are film directors. Joseph is known for playing Commander Fred Waterford in The Handmaid's Tale. What else has Joseph Fiennes starred in? Joseph played Commisar Danilov in 2001's Enemy at the Gates with Jude Law. He is also well known for his portrayal as the corrupt Monsignor Timothy Howard in the second season of American Horror Story. Joseph married Swiss-Spanish model Maria Dolores Dieguez in 2009. The couple have two daughters together, Isabel and Sam. 9 9
