President Boakai Launches Passport Centers in Bong and Grand Gedeh Counties

On Monday, July 21, 2025, President Boakai inaugurated the new Passport Application Center in Gbarnga, Bong County. The initiative is a central feature of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' National Passport Decentralization Program, which aims to decongest the central passport bureau in Monrovia and reduce the travel burden on Liberians residing in remote areas. 'In Zwedru, we proudly unveiled our new passport hub as part of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai's launch of the National Passport Decentralization Initiative,' said Foreign Minister Nyanti. 'This is more than a building it is a promise delivered. Citizens of Grand Gedeh and surrounding counties will no longer need to endure long journeys and extended wait times to access their constitutional right to travel.' Foreign Minister Nyanti emphasized the government's commitment to expanding passport services to additional regions in the near future. 'We are determined to ensure that no Liberian is left behind, regardless of geography,' she affirmed. The Zwedru center features state-of-the-art biometric equipment and is directly connected to the Ministry's central database in Monrovia, ensuring secure, efficient, and timely processing of passport applications. The launch reflects the government's ongoing investment in digital transformation and the modernization of public service delivery. The Bong and Grand Gedeh centers are the first of several regional passport hubs to be rolled out under this decentralization initiative. Their launch is part of the official calendar of events celebrating Liberia's 178th Independence Day, underscoring the government's focus on tangible service delivery and national renewal. Local leaders, traditional authorities, youth organizations, and citizens gathered in large numbers in Zwedru to witness the occasion. President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., departed the country earlier today, June 19, 2025, to participate in the West Africa Economic Summit (WAES), taking place from June 20–21, 2025, in Abuja, Federal Republic of Nigeria. The West Africa Economic Summit brings together Heads of State, senior government officials, private sector leaders, and development partners from across the region to explore strategies for accelerating trade, investment, and regional integration. The summit is a key platform for shaping policies and partnerships that promote sustainable economic growth, job creation, and industrial development across West Africa. President Boakai is scheduled to address the WAES Forum, where he will articulate Liberia's vision for economic transformation and present investment opportunities in critical sectors such as agriculture, energy, infrastructure, tourism, and digital innovation. He will also hold a series of bilateral and multilateral meetings with fellow regional leaders, investors, and institutions to advance Liberia's development agenda and secure meaningful economic partnerships. The WAES is being convened in fulfillment of a commitment made by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his chairmanship of ECOWAS in 2023 to organize a special summit focused on trade and investment in the region. The forum will culminate in the ECOWAS Summit of Heads of State and Government on Sunday, June 22, where leaders will deliberate on pressing regional issues including economic cooperation, peace and security, and sustainable development. The President of the Republic of Liberia, His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has sent a condolence message to the Government and People of the Federal Republic of Nigeria following the death of His Excellency Mr. Muhammadu Buhari, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025 in London at the age of Eighty-Two (82). According to a Foreign Ministry release, President Boakai, on behalf of the Government and people of the Republic of Liberia and in his own name, expressed profound and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family for the irreparable loss sustained. In his condolence message to the Nigerian President His Excellency Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President Boakai stressed that former President Buhari will be remembered for the formidable role he played in consolidating the embodied Africa's struggle for a sustained multi-party democracy. The Liberian leader also stated that the former President will also be credited for being twice elected Nigeria's President. He served as a military head of state between January 1984 and August 1985. He then hoped that the resilience and strength that the people of Nigeria have always demonstrated during challenging circumstances will be brought to bear during this difficult period of national mourning.
