Glorious Goodwood day one: Betting odds and race rundown

THE FIVE-DAY Glorious Goodwood kicks off with a stacked card that includes two Group 2s and the Group 1 Goodwood Cup. Future stars will be made, and reputations will be tarnished over this five-day spectacular. 🏇 Quick Qatar Goodwood Festival day one predictions Win singles and each way bets from the best horse racing betting sites: 1:20 Coral Chesterfield Cup Handicap (4yo+) - 1m2f A wide-open opening to Glorious Goodwood, and a few come in here with a lot more improvement to come. Jolly Jack Tar has done all his running to date on the all-weather and comes here on the back of an easy win on his handicap debut. Should he be able to transfer that level to turf, then this son of Too Darn Hot looks set to give them all something to think about. The Joseph O'Brien-trained Masoun comes here seeking a hat trick of wins after the consistent Bear Profit at the Curragh. He has hit a rich vein of form and brings big field experience. Castle Cove got the better of GREY CUBAN on his comeback this season, and there shouldn't be much between them here again. However, on the back of a good win from the front at Chester, Grey Cuban looks set for another big performance here. Even though he seems to excel at Chester, he has winning form away from there, and given the unique test that Goodwood presents, he looks the type that could relish what is in front of him. He looks like a solid each-way player in a wide-open race at the prices. Tony Montana, who can be forgiven his run at Royal Ascot, previous race winners Ancient Rome and Take Heart, and the well-handicapped English Oak, all have their each-way chance here. Our pick: GREY CUBAN 1:55 Group 2 Coral Vintage Stakes (2yo) - 7f Humidity, who comes here unbeaten after winning his two starts to date, which include a Royal Ascot win in the Listed Chesham Stakes. The form of the race has taken a few knocks since, with the second being turned over at 2/13 on his next start, and the fourth, Venetian Lace, was well beaten in a Group 2 on her next start. Dorset got a tender handling ride on debut when second to his stablemate Amadeus Mozart, but made up for that with an all-the-way win on his next start. He is the obvious one that can take a big leap forward here, but a chance is taken that DO OR DO NOT, the best maiden in training, can go close to breaking his duck here. He comes here after two runner-up finishes at the Group 2 level. The first of those came against the potential superstar Gstaad, followed by a one-length defeat at Newmarket when conceding first run to Zavateri. It's only a matter of time before he gets his head in front in one of these, and given that he has shown that he can consistently run to a high level, he is, at worst, a place player here. For the once-raced runners, Goodwood Galaxy looks the most interesting after being a rare first-time out winner for David Menuisier. Our pick: DO OR DO NOT 2:30 Group 2 HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes (3yo+) - 7f The evergreen Kinross and two-time winner of the Lennox Stakes returned from his break with a near miss in the Group 3 John of Gaunt Stakes at Haydock, where the well-backed Ten Bob Tony did just enough to hold off the late surge of Kinross. There shouldn't be much between them here, with Ten Bob Tony promising to take another step forward after that win. For all the talent the Audience has, he finds it hard to put it all together. But when he does, as we saw when he ran away with this last season, he is a high-class performer. However, since his win in this last season, he hasn't come close to replicating that form, and hope lies in cheekpieces sparking him back into form. With the clear question marks over Audience, and Kinross not getting any younger, siding with the young legs of JONQUIL may be the way to go. Yes, he was a no-show when down the field in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, but he never seemed comfortable going the six-furlong pace. Even though he was well beaten on the day, the form of that race has been given several boosts since. The return to seven furlongs will suit, and replicating his first two starts this season can be enough to get this French 2000 Guineas runner-up back in the winner's enclosure. Our pick: JONQUIL 3:05 Group 1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (3yo+) - 2m Despite Illinois' heavy defeat in the Ascot Gold Cup, Ryan Moore stays loyal. You can set your watch by the son of Galileo, and even though he has yet to win a Group 1, he has been placed in three. His day will come, but how he and the rest of the field cope with giving away a stone in weight to his stablemate and massively improved SCANDINAVIA is yet to be seen. The second of the Ballydoyle runners ran a big race at Royal Ascot, rallying to be beaten just over a length in the Group 2 Queen's Vase. This was over one mile six furlongs, and he went on to better that performance with a devastating performance in the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy Stakes at Newmarket, winning by just shy of nine lengths. He is well worth his place here on the back of that and looks set for a big performance. The same can be said for the rapid improver French Master, who continues to improve and can go well in his first Group 1. Our pick: SCANDINAVIA 3:45 Coral Golden Rewards Shaker Handicap - 5f As open a five-furlong sprint as you will find this week. All twenty-two runners have their chance here, and a lot of luck in running will be needed. Redorange comes here on the back of two runs that can be upgraded due to the draw bias against him when finishing third and fourth, respectively, at Royal Ascot. He's on a mark that he looks capable of winning off, but in a race of this nature, he's been well found in the market. Adrestia, who was ahead of Redorange at Royal Ascot, comes here on the back of a good showing at the Group 3 level, and can be a player back in handicap company. However, the one that looks set to run his race is course and distance runner SHAGRAAN. He won at this meeting last season and has been running consistently all season. He was last seen finishing just in front of Adrestia at Sandown, and despite having to carry top-weight, Shagraan looks set for a strong showing. Among others to note, Regal Envoy and Canon's House can go well. Our pick: SHAGRAN 4:20 British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes (2yo) - 6f High Approval was turned over at 8/11 in a York maiden last time out, and all of a sudden, he doesn't look the most straightforward. Stellar Sunrise is another favourite who was turned over last time, but he was slow into stride and ran on well in the closing stages. He has a clear chance here, but NAVAL LIGHT may not find a better opportunity to get off the mark. After an eye-catching runner-up debut at Beverly, Naval Light ran a race full of promise when a never-nearer eighth in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes. He was slow away, but made some good headway late on, only to meet trouble in running. The step up to six furlongs looks the right call, and it won't be very reassuring if he can't get off the mark here. Our pick: NAVAL LIGHT 4:45 Ridgeview Fillies' Handicap (3yo+ 0-95) - 1m Dash Of Azure continued her progress when finishing fifth in the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot. She only has to deal with a one-pound rise in the weights, but she is short enough at her price in a race of this nature. Mahara's Love comes here on the back of a double and looked good in her latest win when taking them from the front. This is a step up in class for here, but she is weighted to go close here. Handicap debutant PROTEST has run in three consecutive listed races since her debut win and ran practically well on her two starts this season. Her mark of 92 seems fair based on her form, and she has room for improvement in a race that looks set to be run at a pace that will help her settle. 2024 Winner: Arisaig J: Jamie Spencer T: Charlie Johnston Odds: 9/2JFav Our pick: PROTEST 5:30 World Pool Bet With The Tote EBF Fillies' Handicap (3yo+ 0-95) The Godolphin-owned Dubai Treasure drops back in trip after a good show on turf at York. He has an all-the-way win to his name over seven furlongs, so expect to see him bounced out in front to try to make the most of his extra stamina. Not much separates Shallow and Arabian Leopard on their first and second at Newmarket's July course, but they will find this much harder than they faced on the day. Even though Cinque Verde finds it hard to get his head in front, he is a model of consistency and looks set for a big showing once again. However, the quirky but talented SEE EMILY RUN is set for a big performance. She has her quirks, and they were on full show when she refused to enter the stall when looking to back up a cosy win at Chester. She is only three pounds higher coming into here, and despite the risks attached with her, this course and distance winner can be the one they all have to beat. 🕔 Qatar Goodwood day one schedule TIME RACE DISTANCE 1:20 Coral Chesterfield Cup Handicap 1m2f 1:55 Group 2 Coral Vintage Stakes 7f 2:30 Group 2 HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes 7f 3:05 Group 1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes 2m 3:45 Coral Golden Rewards Shaker Handicap 5f 4:20 British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes 6f 4:55 Ridgeview Fillies' Handicap 1m 5:30 World Pool Bet With The Tote EBF Fillies's Handicap 6f 📺 How to watch day one of the Qatar Goodwood Festival Location: Chichester, England, United Kingdom Date/Time: Tuesday 29 th July, 2025. Joseph O'Brien-trained Al Riffa on the Melbourne Cup trail after Curragh Cup romp

Irish trainer Joseph O'Brien might have found the spearhead for his bid for a third Melbourne Cup win at Flemington in November. O'Brien won the 2017 and 2020 Melbourne Cup s with Rekindling and Twilight Payment respectively but did not have a runner in last year's edition of Australia's greatest race. However, O'Brien could be back at Flemington on the first Tuesday in November after Al Riffa 's dominant win in Saturday's Group 2 Curragh Cup in Ireland. The five-year-old stallion, by Wootton Bassett, strolled to a five-length win in the 1-¾ mile (about 2800m) contest under jockey Dylan Brown-McMonagle, who has previously ridden with success in Melbourne. Bookmakers immediately reacted, promoting Al Riffa to the second line of Melbourne Cup betting at $15 behind $11 favourites Sir Delius, Vauban and Via Sistina. O'Brien's stable representative Kevin Blake said Al Riffa relished the rise in distance but would probably get his chance to show his Melbourne Cup credentials in the coming weeks. 'He was very relaxed and Dylan said he was a very easy ride over that trip,' Blake told local media. 'I'd say it's most likely that he'll go straight to the Irish St Leger from here. 'There is a possibility of the Pries Von Berlin he won last year but I'd say it's more likely he'll go straight to the Irish Leger. 'The Melbourne Cup is in the mind thereafter. 'We all know what comes with that but it's what we'd like to do, if we're allowed.' • Brad Waters' Blackbook: Horses to follow from Flemington on Saturday O'Brien has used the Curragh Cup as part of the preparation for both of his Melbourne Cup winners. Both Rekindling and Twilight Payment won the Curragh Cup before their Melbourne Cup triumphs. Melbourne Spring Carnival favourite Red Cadeaux claimed the Curragh Cup in 2011 before finishing second to French galloper Dunaden in one of the closest Melbourne Cup finishes in history later that year. Al Riffa was a Group 1 winner in Ireland as a two-year-old before progressing to score at Group 1 level in Germany last year.

This three-year-old gelded son of Dawn Approach subsequently joined Joseph O'Brien and finished fourth in the Golden Gates handicap at Royal Ascot. Dylan Browne McMonagle gets off the same stable's Valorous Power, winner of a Limerick maiden last time out, to keep the ride on Glen To Glen. 4.00, Redcar – Apprentice Handicap (Class 4, 1m; Racing TV) It still looks like there is better to come from GLORIOUSLY SASSY, who won a Beverley maiden on his previous start. North Yorkshire trainer Karl Burke has booked a good rider in Jack Nicholls for a race that is restricted to relatively inexperienced apprentices. Where is Ryan Moore riding on Sunday? As on Saturday, he is at the Curragh, where his mounts include the Aidan O'Brien-trained Diego Velazquez in the Group 2 Minstrel Stakes (3.40pm). The 7f trip could be on the short side for this son of Frankel, but the four-year-old colt seems like the best talent in the race. Where is William Buick riding on Sunday? It looks like Buick has a rare day off. When is the next big racing festival? The week-long Galway Festival kicks off in Ireland on Monday July 28, followed a day later by Glorious Goodwood. Check out the latest Glorious Goodwood free bets and betting offers ahead of the West Sussex showdown. The latter is a five-day fixture and is set to feature the Kingman colt Field Of Gold, possibly the best horse in the world, in the Sussex Stakes on July 30, one of three Group 1s at the meeting. What does NAP mean? NAP is a word used in betting circles to describe a prediction that a tipster thinks has a particularly strong chance of winning. Many horse racing tipsters pick out a 'NAP of the day', which is their favoured selection from all the races across the different meetings. The term NAP derives from the French card game Napoleon. When players of this game thought they had a particularly strong hand that they would win with, they would shout 'Napoleon'. Joseph O'Brien aiming for Group One glory in France on Sunday with Green Sense

Joseph O'Brien will try upset his father's Irish Oaks hotpot Minnie Hauk at the Curragh on Saturday but his big-race ambitions also extend to Paris 24 hours later. Top French rider Maxime Guyon has been engaged for O'Brien's Green Sense in the €119,000 Group Two Goffs Prix Robert Papin at Chantilly. The Irish hope is the sole filly taking on four colts in the historic six-furlong juvenile event won by Blackbeard in 2022. Green Sense, a Curragh winner on her debut in April, was fancied for Royal Ascot's Albany Stakes but failed to fire behind Venetian Sun. READ MORE The top-class Ramatuelle beat male opposition in this two years ago and Green Sense is up against Venetian Sun's stable companion Super Soldier, unplaced behind Gstaad in the Coventry at Ascot. His trainer Karl Burke won the Papin last year with Arabie. Another English hope, Tadej, was sixth in the Coventry. O'Brien is rapidly closing in on €1.5 million in prizemoney in Ireland this season and Wemighttakedlongway could sweep him past it in style if emerging on top in the Oaks. The trainer is triple-handed in Sunday's Group Three Al Shira'aa Meadow Court Stakes at the Curragh and he has snapped up Ryan Moore for Uluru. The sole raider for this contest is Mark Prescott's Tasmania. The 2023 French Oaks third was previously at HQ when unplaced behind Bluestocking in last year's Pretty Polly. She returns on the back of a comeback effort on the all-weather at Newcastle and forecast softer conditions should suit her well. Sunday's Curragh feature is the Group Two Romanised Minstrel Stakes, where Diego Velazquez steps back to seven furlongs for the first time since his racecourse debut. The Frankel colt has promised to break through to the top level without ever quite managing it, but still boasts a standout 118 rating in this company. There could, however, be significant improvement to come after his return to action behind Docklands in the Queen Anne at Ascot. Elsewhere, the National Hunt campaign continues in Britain with Gavin Cromwell sending Ballysax Hank for the featured £100,000 (€115,000) Summer Plate in Market Rasen. Harry Cobden rides the sole Irish hope who is having just his fourth start over fences. In other jumps news, Horse Racing Ireland has confirmed the three-mile Grade One novice chase at Leopardstown's Christmas festival has been scrapped. Instead, it has reversed the decision to finish the two-mile novice event that had traditionally been a St Stephen's Day highlight. That contest will return on December 26th and as a result Limerick's Faugheen Chase has been extended in trip. 'Following a review of the 2024/2025 programme, it was deemed optimal to reinstate the Christmas Novice Steeplechase at Leopardstown and create a greater distance differential with that race and the Faugheen Novice Steeplechase by extending the Limerick Grade 1 by 1.5 furlongs,' a HRI statement said. Racing's ruling body also said this season will see changes to black-type bumper races. They include excluding seven-year-old horses and older from all Graded and Listed bumpers. It comes after the seven-year-old Redemption Day won the Grade One bumper at the Punchestown festival last year. He had finished runner-up in the race two years previously.

Minnie Hauk at prohibitive odds to become 16th filly to complete Epsom-Curragh Oaks double

The Cork hurling team are cramped odds for this weekend's All-Ireland hurling final, but Minnie Hauk is an even hotter sporting favourite in Saturday's Juddmonte Irish Oaks. Aidan O'Brien's filly looks a standout for the Curragh's €500,000 feature as she bids to become the 16th horse to complete the Epsom-Curragh Oaks double. Snowfall in 2021 was one of O'Brien's seven previous winners of the race and she duly completed the double at prohibitive odds of 2-7. Ante-post betting suggests Minnie Hauk could start considerably shorter than that again against six opponents, half of which are her stable companions. It's a long way from last year's 14-runner contest – the biggest field in over a dozen years – won by the British raider You Got To Me. This time it's an all-local contest that includes a maiden and a runner rated a relatively mediocre 85. READ MORE On the face of it, only Wemighttakedlongway, trained by O'Brien's son Joseph , looks up to giving Minnie Hauk a race, and she was only fourth at Epsom last month. Wemighttakedlongway was subsequently fourth again to the Epsom runner-up Whirl in the Pretty Polly so the form looks solid. The daughter of Australia is back at a mile and a half and Joseph O'Brien is hopeful some ease in the ground will help her close the gap. Nevertheless, how enticing a prospect a Classic is that looks more coronation than competition remains to be seen. But should Minnie Hauk pull off the double she will join some stellar company. Enable in 2017 subsequently became one of the best middle-distance performers in Europe this century. Snow Fairy (2010) and Ouija Board (2004) progressed to become globally acclaimed performers as well. True Love ridden by Ryan Moore on their way to winning the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot. Photograph: John Walton/PA Wire In a notably open middle-distance scene this year, Minnie Hauk already tops some betting lists for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in October. All of it suggests the chances of something putting it up to her come 3.40pm on Saturday look more unlikely than Tipp turning over the Rebels, but against that, excellence should be on show. A similar friction between quality and competition looks to surround the earlier Gain Railway Stakes, one of a trio of Group Two contests backing up the Classic. Moved back from its established Derby-day date, it has just four runners lining up. Small fields aren't unusual for a race with a stellar roll of honour, but how Ballydoyle's filly True Love looks like being the outstanding candidate is. The last filly to win the Railway was Camargo in 1998. True Love landed the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot and is Ryan Moore's pick over Puerto Rico as O'Brien chases a 15th win in the race. If switching the Group Two Railway for the Group Three Anglesey over Derby weekend had a certain Pattern book logic to it, this turnout will still convince sceptics it really had more to do with making the 'Blue Riband' programme more suitable for World Pool betting. However, such a turnout, particularly considering the likely financial pay-off from the World Pool, will probably bolster official belief that the switch is worth it. Unlike Derby-day, there is plenty of Pattern-race support to this Classic card, although another standout could dominate the Michael John Kennedy Curragh Cup. Dylan Browne McMonagle riding Al Riffa (right) to win the Goffs Vincent O'Brien National Stakes at the Curragh in 2022. Photograph:The dual Group One winner Al Riffa has spent his career mixing it with some of Europe's best middle-distance performers and memorably gave City Of Troy a scare in last year's Eclipse. Joseph O'Brien stretches him into the staying division now and with encouragement in his pedigree for stamina, and no top-flight penalties to concede, this looks an ideal opportunity. Some high-class sprinters contest the Barberstown Castle Sapphire Stakes including Arizona Blaze, who found only one too good in Royal Ascot's Commonwealth Cup. He's playing senior hurling now, though, against his elders, albeit it may prove to be another three-year-old, Powerful Nation, that proves too strong. Andy Slattery has made no secret of his regard for the colt who has Group One ambitions later this season. Just a single cross-channel raider takes on local sprinters in the Scurrys Handicap but Canon's House is on a roll having won his last three starts. The Easterby runner is ridden by Billy Garrity, who won the Scurrys on Strike Red a couple of years ago, and the training team scored with Perfect Pasture in 2016. In other news, the US Grade One highlight on Saturday night is the Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park in New Jersey, where the Preakness winner Journalism returns to action. Runner-up to Sovereignty in both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont, Journalism takes on seven rivals in the $1 million Haskell Stakes over nine furlongs, off at 10.45pm Irish time and live on Sky. Californian trainer Bob Baffert is seeking a 10th Haskell victory with Goal Oriented lining up against Journalism.
