‘Can't help but feel frustrated': Collingwood lament back-to-back single-digit defeats
Loading Collingwood will go to work on their inside-50 efficiency after wasting a career-best day from Nick Daicos to suffer a one-point defeat to an inspired Fremantle at the MCG on Sunday. A late Josh Treacy mark deep in defence secured the Dockers a thrilling and crucial win that handed Craig McRae's Magpies back-to-back single-digit defeats despite having 23 more inside 50s and winning the contest possession tally by 20. Fremantle kicked the last four goals of the game, including ex-Bomber Patrick Voss' personal-best sixth, to steal a road victory after trailing ladder-leading Collingwood by 22 points early in the final quarter. The Pies also laid an extraordinary 35 tackles inside 50 to the Dockers' nine. 'You talk about all the numbers – inside 50s and contested possession, and all this stuff – [but] it just didn't feel like we connected that well this week again,' McRae said. 'But it's one of those hard games where you dominate so much of the territory, you're winning it back, and you go into such density, so it makes it really hard to score. But I can't help but feel frustrated in that game because you feel like you've done so much right, and then you don't get the nourishment of a win. 'There are many layers to it. Our connection inside 50 wasn't at the level it has been, but also, we thought we did enough right to get the job done today.' Former Docker Lachie Schultz had the last opportunity for Collingwood with barely 10 seconds left, but his desperation snap landed in Treacy's lap in front of 62,198 fans. Jamie Elliott, who has a reputation for late-game goalkicking heroics, also missed a set shot inside the last three minutes that levelled the scores before a Shai Bolton behind – after Jack Crisp conceded a high-contact free kick – gave Fremantle the lead for good inside the last two minutes. The Dockers are now only percentage outside the top four after starting the season with five losses in the first nine rounds.

Fremantle's landmark MCG moment as Collingwood suffer back-to-back defeats
A late Josh Treacy mark deep in defence has secured Fremantle a thrilling and crucial win as they handed Collingwood back-to-back narrow defeats despite another prolific Nick Daicos performance. The Dockers kicked the last four goals of the game – including emerging key forward Patrick Voss' career-best sixth – to steal a one-point victory after trailing the ladder-leading Magpies by 22 points early in the final quarter. Former Fremantle forward Lachie Schultz had the last opportunity for Collingwood with barely 10 seconds left, but his desperation snap landed in Treacy's lap in front of 62,198 fans. Fremantle are now only percentage outside the top four after starting the season with five losses in the first nine rounds. The Magpies stormed home in similar circumstances last week against Gold Coast before falling short by six points. They are only two points clear of reigning premiers Brisbane Lions, who they host at the MCG in two weeks' time. Brownlow Medal favourite Daicos shrugged off soreness to amass a career-most 43 disposals and eight clearances that could deliver him maximum votes. However, he will have stiff competition from towering ex-Bomber Voss, who had never kicked more than three goals in a game, but already beat that by early in the second term. All of those were on Darcy Moore before coach Craig McRae switched Brayden Maynard onto him.

West Coast youngster Jobe Shanahan draws comparisons to Fremantle spearhead Josh Treacy after hot career start
Jobe Shanahan's blistering start to his career has the West Coast youngster being compared to cross-town rival Josh Treacy. It appears the Eagles have unearthed a star in Shanahan and the first-year sensation has been the club's shining light since their bye. The pick No.30 from last year's draft has caught the attention of the AFL world after he made his debut against Collingwood at Marvel Stadium late last month. Exclusive Champion Data stats obtained by The West Australian can reveal the extent of the impact the 18-year-old forward has had in a promising start to his career. Shanahan's 14 disposal, five-mark and two-goal outing against Greater Western Sydney at Optus Stadium on Friday night was the 15th highest rated game ever by an 18-year-old key forward. The 195cm Victorian also became just the fifth teenage key forward to be ranked in the top 10 for their team in each of their first two games — joining the likes of Port Adelaide's Mitch Georgiades, Richmond's Tom Lynch and Carlton Coleman medallist Harry McKay. Shanahan is also in good company as just the fifth Eagle to ever record a combined 22 disposals, eight marks, and three goals over his first two matches with the others being club greats in Jeremy McGovern, Liam Ryan, Jack Darling and Quinten Lynch. Former Eagle Sharrod Wellingham has played alongside some of the modern-day great forwards in Josh Kennedy and Travis Cloke in his time at West Coast and Collingwood. And the 2010 Magpies premiership player said he could see attributes in Shanahan that had him on track to be a centrepiece of the Eagles' future much like Treacy is for Fremantle. 'I am not sure if the comparisons have been made far and wide, but I can see him turning into like a Fremantle's Josh Treacy. Build a little bit more size on him and he can be anything,' Wellingham told The West Australian. 'The way he attacks the ball and the way he's got the confidence to kick those long-range goals. He's kicked a couple of goals from outside 50m already which is already a pretty big confidence booster for a young player. 'His work-rate which is really high as well which is one of the things that impresses me most about Josh Treacy.' West Coast could have a nearly-new forward line in 2026 with co-captain and free agent Oscar Allen still unsigned beyond this year and linked to a potential move to Brisbane. It would leave last year's All-Australian Jake Waterman as the focal point alongside Shanahan and 203cm forward-ruck Archer Reid from next year. Wellingham said Shanahan and Reid were players you could build a strong team around as the Eagles look to rebuild after the darkest on-field period in club history. 'It's got to be somebody with the right work ethic in terms of on ground and from the small sample size I've seen it looks like he's got a high work-rate,' he said. 'That was what was so good about JK (Kennedy) and Travis Cloke was their work-rate, their ability to get up and down the ground because they are the key forwards you can build stuff around. 'If he can learn of Jake going forward and I'm sure that's what he (Waterman) will be doing while he's out injured, he'll be trying to help these young forwards coming through. 'Then you also have Reid as well, who I see as more of a deeper forward, but you can lock those two in as your full forward and centre-half-forward for the next 10 years and things are starting to look very exciting.'

'Should be banned': AFL fans all make same complaint about 'ridiculous' move
Fans are questioning the AFL's decision to schedule a Thursday night game in Perth after Fremantle's win over Essendon at Optus Stadium. Luke Jackson produced another rucking masterclass and Josh Treacy broke his run of ducks to lift the Dockers to a 41-point win over the injury-hit Bombers. Jackson had 21 disposals to go with 48 hit-outs, 10 clearances and three goals in the 16.8 (104) to 9.9 (63) win in front of 37,570 fans. And while the strong turnout showed the Thursday night time-slot worked for the WA audience, the majority of the AFL world on the east coast were left fuming. The 6.10pm start time translated to an 8.10pm start in Melbourne and Sydney - later than the usual 7.30pm start for Thursday night games - and it didn't finish until around 11pm on the east coast. It normally wouldn't be an issue on a Friday or Saturday night, but fans on the east coast couldn't stay up late because of work and school the next day. Viewers flooded social media with angry comments questioning why a Thursday night game would be scheduled on the west coast. The AFL was likely looking to capitalise on the extra people in Perth watching State of Origin 2 on Wednesday night, but it alienated the TV audience in the eastern states. One person wrote: "Dear AFL, for future reference, Thursday night games do not work in Perth at this time slot." Another commented: "Surely Thursday night footy from Perth simply doesn't work. Most people on the East coast (who work) will go to sleep at half time. Reckon Friday night is more suitable for the later start." A third added: "They (Perth) should be banned from playing Thursday nights. The only state it helps is WA." While a fourth wrote: "Thursday night games should start at 7.30 if played at WA. They either accept it or forget it, kids go to school and to start at 8.10 is ridiculous." The only state it helps is WA — Cool Reigns (@reign40402) June 19, 2025 Works alright in Perth. Probably 40,000 there tonight. Pity @freodockers had to do it on a five day break in order to get a couple home games in a row. Have a good sleep 😴 — MarkTheAndrews (@MarkTheAndrews1) June 19, 2025 Only 14 different venues to choose from and the AFL schedule a Thursday night in WA the night after a State of OriginAnd put Essendoom there to capitalise on the NSW & QLD marketsAFL House is absolutely flying though @Sammy__Edmund — Shane Donoghue (@shanedonoghue) June 19, 2025 Meanwhile, Fremantle's fifth win on the trot improved their record to 9-5 ahead of next week's home clash with St Kilda. Essendon are now 6-8 and face a major battle to turn around their fortunes, with a fourth-consecutive loss leaving them well adrift of the top eight. Jackson dominated his contest against Essendon debutant Vigo Visentini, who battled hard for 15 disposals and 17 hit-outs but was outclassed by Fremantle's star big man. "He's a special player. We love having him. He's not going anywhere," star Fremantle midfielder Caleb Serong told Fox Footy about Jackson. "He's locked in with us. I think what him and Sean (Darcy) are going to build over the next couple of months is really exciting. I can't wait to be a part of it. As a midfielder, I'm licking my lips." RELATED: Cyril Rioli continues sad stance as Buddy Franklin set for return AFL world sends flood of messages over news about Abbey Holmes Nat Fyfe earned a rare start after spending the last two games as the sub, but managed just 11 disposals and one clearance before being taken off in the final quarter. Fyfe spent periods stationed in attack to help fill the void left by Sam Switkowski (hamstring), and coach Justin Longmuir was happy with the former captain's efforts. "I thought he ran some really good patterns," Longmuir said. "I was really happy with the way he approached the role. I thought some of his physicality through the middle of the ground was great." with AAP
