Roman Josi diagnosed with POTS. What it means and when Predators captain could return
Roman Josi diagnosed with POTS. What it means and when Predators captain could return The Nashville Predators have released a statement regarding captain Roman Josi's recent diagnosis of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. "Roman Josi was diagnosed with POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) toward the end of the 2024-25 season," the statement reads. "He has been undergoing treatment since that diagnosis and is progressing exceptionally well," In a recent interview with Blick, a Swiss digital media company, Josi revealed that he was diagnosed with POTS after investigating the after effects of a head injury. The injury occurred during a Feb. 25 game against the Florida Panthers, when Sam Bennett hit Josi into the wall, causing his head to hit the glass. What is POTS and when will Roman Josi return to Predators? After dealing with headaches, dizziness and lightheadedness, Josi said the diagnosis was made during a post-concussion check-up. POTS is a condition in which one suffers an increased heart rate after standing up and can be accompanied by dizziness, fatigue and brain fog, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. Since his diagnosis, Josi has been given medicine for treatment and expects to be able to play the 2025-26 season. 'I've been feeling much better since then," he told Blick, via Google Translate. "I've regained the belief that I'll be 100 percent fit again and can fully attack with Nashville and the Swiss national team next winter.' The Predators' statement adds that the organization feels Josi will be fine to play in the 2025-26 season. "We concur with Roman that with continued management and treatment, he can return to the ice for the 2025-26 season and continue his elite hockey career," the statement read. Josi, who missed the final 25 games of the season with a concussion, scored nine goals and had 29 assists in 53 games for Nashville in 2024-25. The 35-year-old captain is the Predators' all-time leader in points (724) and games played (962). OLYMPIAN: Roman Josi to represent Switzerland, Juuse Saros on Finland roster for 2026 Olympics Predators reacquire Erik Haula The Predators have acquired forward Erik Haula from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a fourth-round pick (2025) and defenseman Jeremy Hanzel. Haula, 34, scored 11 goals and 10 assists for the Devils last season. In his 12-year career as a winger and center, Haula has 153 goals and 184 goals in 759 games for seven different teams. The trade brings Haula back to Nashville, where he spent the 2020-21 season. That year, he scored nine goals and 12 assists in 51 games with the Predators before leaving in free agency for the Boston Bruins. Haula is in the final year of a three-year contract he signed with New Jersey in 2023. He is owed $3.15 million for the 2025-26 season, after which he will be an unrestricted free agent. After accounting for Haula's $3.1 million cap hit, the Predators will have $14.2 million in cap space for the 2025-26 season, according to PuckPedia. Nashville Predators captain Roman Josi discusses concussion recovery, status for next season
One of the biggest questions for the Nashville Predators this summer is the health of captain Roman Josi. Josi, who missed the final 25 games of the season, suffered what was called an upper-body injury after he was hit by Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett on Feb. 25. Advertisement At the Predators' end-of-season media availability, Josi confirmed it was concussion-related, and said he should be ready to play in 2025-26. "I'm progressing really well and now I've got a lot of time off now," he said. "I'll definitely be playing when the season starts." Josi said he has experience with this injury and knows what he needs to get back on track. "It's something I've dealt with before," he said. "Some stuff I'm still dealing with. But it's been good. I've had a couple months now to recover. I'm feeling better and better." Advertisement Unfortunately, concussions are becoming common for Josi. He missed the final 15 games of the 2022-23 season with a concussion, and has missed other games in his career after taking hits to the head. It was previously reported that Josi had as many as five concussions prior to 2023. BRUNETTE BACK? What Andrew Brunette said about his future as Nashville Predators coach "I'm not concerned about that, to be honest," Josi said of his concussion history. "I've dealt with it before. I got some really good answers, really positive. Some stuff that I can work on. I'm not concerned about it. I have been getting better." After getting hit by Bennett, Josi said the team's performance and position in the Western Conference standings did not play a part in not returning to the team this season. Advertisement "It was a question of taking care of my health. With those things, you want to be careful," he said. "If I was healthy, I would have played. It was never what I wanted, to sit out the rest of the season. If I felt like I was healthy to play, I would have played." Alex Daugherty is the Predators beat writer for The Tennessean. Nashville Predators place captain Roman Josi on injured reserve with upper body injury
The Nashville Predators have placed captain Roman Josi on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. The team made the announcement ahead of Saturday's matchup against the New York Islanders at UBS Arena, along with recalling forward Jake Lucchini and defenseman Spencer Stastney. Additionally, the Predators are holding forward Gustav Nyquist out of the lineup for the purposes of a trade. Josi was injured by a Sam Bennett hit in the second period of Tuesday's 4-1 loss to the Florida Panthers. On the play, Bennett hit Josi from behind near the boards, causing Josi's head to impact the glass. Though Josi finished playing the period, he did not return for the third period and missed Thursday's 2-1 win over the Jets. The Predators announced on Thursday that Josi was being evaluated for an upper body injury. Players on injured reserve are ineligible to play in a game for seven days, according to the NHL's hockey operations guidelines. The earliest Josi could return would be March 6 against the Seattle Kraken. Josi, 34, has played in 52 games for the Predators this season, scoring nine goals and 29 assists. He played in all 82 games last season, but missed the final 15 games of the 2022-23 season with a concussion. Josi is in the fifth year of an eight-year contract he signed in 2019. Predators hold out Gustav Nyquist (trade-related) vs. Islanders
March 1 - The Nashville Predators held forward Gustav Nyquist out of their game against the host New York Islanders on Saturday afternoon due to "trade-related reasons." The Minnesota Wild and Los Angeles Kings reportedly are potential landing spots for Nyquist, who is playing in the final season of a two-year, $6.37 million contract. Also Saturday, the Predators placed captain Roman Josi on injured reserve. The 2019-20 Norris Trophy recipient is considered week-to-week with an upper-body injury. Nyquist, 35, has totaled 21 points (nine goals, 12 assists) in 57 games this season. Josi, 34, was injured after absorbing a hit from Sam Bennett of the Florida Panthers in a 4-1 loss on Tuesday. The defenseman sat out Nashville's 2-1 victory against the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday. "Obviously with those things, it's day to day, could be week to week, it could be season-ending," Predators coach Andrew Brunette said. "We don't really know yet." Josi has 38 points (nine goals, 29 assists) in 53 games while averaging 25:02 of ice time. The Predators also recalled forward Jake Lucchini and defenseman Spencer Stastney from Milwaukee of the American Hockey League. --Field Level Media

Nashville Predators' Andrew Brunette addresses hit by Panthers player that injured Roman Josi
Following the loss of Roman Josi in the second period of the Nashville Predators' 4-1 loss to the Florida Panthers, Andrew Brunette expressed frustration with what led to his captain's early exit. "I didn't like it. I don't think there's a place for it," Brunette said of Panthers' forward Sam Bennett's hit that led to the injury. On the play, which occurred at the 10:22 mark of the second period, Bennett hit Josi from behind near the boards, which resulted in Josi's head hitting the glass. After the hit, Josi was down on the ice for a moment, clearly dazed. Bennett was given a two-minute penalty for boarding on the play. "Bennett is an honest, hard player, I just thought was a little reckless," Brunette added. "It was a very vulnerable position that Josi was in, close to the boards, head first. The league will look at it. They'll have different angles, and we'll take another look at it here as well. But just unfortunate to lose a player like that from that kind of hit." Josi played three more shifts in the second period but did not return to the ice for the start of the third period. Following the second period intermission, Brunette was seen vocalizing his frustration toward the officials. When asked about his exchange with the officials, Brunette explained calling a major penalty on the play would have allowed time to review the hit. "In that situation, for me, the rule's in place to at least look at it," he said. "To me, that was a easy one to look at it. If you deem it (not a major), that's why the rule is in place to call it." According to NHL rule 20.6, all major penalties are subject to an on-ice video review, during which the officials can either confirm or modify the penalty as called. Instead, the officials called a two-minute penalty for boarding, which is not subject to review. "We lost our best player and he's the captain of our team," Brunette said. "He's not gonna lay around, pretend he's hurt, and not come out. That's not what the rule's in place for. We don't make decisions after the hit. Make a decision on what the hit was." TROTZ TANKING? What Predators GM Barry Trotz said about tanking, NHL draft and expectations for rest of season After the loss, the Predators announced Josi would be further evaluated for an upper body injury. No timetable was given for his return. Josi, 34, missed the final 15 games of the 2022-23 season with a concussion, but played in all 82 games last season. Josi missed four games earlier this season with a lower body injury. He's scored nine goals and 29 assists in 52 games for the Predators this season.
