‘Awards Magnet' mailbag: A ‘Bear' Emmy nominations tank? A cap on acting nominees?
Will The Bear collapse in nominations? Should the Emmys cap acting nominees per show? Awards Magnet host Joyce Eng and Gold Derby senior editor Marcus James Dixon are here to answer your burning questions of the the mailbag is back, and so are your hot takes. One lister is shooting their shot with a bold prediction that The Bear will plummet in nominations for Season 3, a year after it set a record for most nominations for a comedy series in a single year with 23. The show obviously won't get blanked completely, but which major category — categories? — might it miss? Perhaps the one it already lost last year to the reigning Best Comedy Series another listener is "deathly afraid" of a complete takeover by The White Lotus in Best Drama Supporting Actress. At the moment, the HBO satire is "only" predicted to claim four of the seven spots in the category with Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, Aimee Lou Wood, and past nominee Natasha Rothwell. But we know how much the acting branch adores The White Lotus — it got nine acting bids for Season 2, one more than for Season 1 — so would anyone be that surprised if it spammed the whole category? Or Best Drama Supporting Actor? And if that happens, should the TV Academy institute a limit to the number of acting nominees per show?Plus: Why is Slow Horses being underestimated? ‘Awards Magnet': New Emmy predictions — including those cutthroat lead categories
Who will be squeezed out in the lead categories of five? Awards Magnet host Joyce Eng and a special guest, Gold Derby senior editor Denton Davidson, discuss their updated Emmy predictions as voting continues. With the number of slots per category now set, it's time to make some tough decisions. Or maybe not-so tough? All the lead acting categories will have five slots this year, barring a tie. That sucks for the Emmy hopefuls, but some of these categories have a pretty firm top four — or even five — contenders, which makes chopping a sixth person slightly less difficult. But with fewer slots for voters to fill in, will that inspire more passion picks? Like for, say, underdog Bridget Everett, who's on her last shot to be nominated for Somebody Somewhere? She's in 10th place in the Best Comedy Actress odds. Two years ago, Jason Segel (Shrinking) surprisingly made the Best Comedy Actor lineup in a field of five over Steve Martin (Only Murders in the Building). Will history repeat? That's good news for the solid top seven in the supporting actress race: Hannah Einbinder (Hacks), Liza Colón-Zayas (The Bear), Catherine O'Hara (The Studio), Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary), Jessica Williams (Shrinking), Janelle James (Abbott Elementary), and Kathryn Hahn (The Studio). But don't count out Megan Stalter, who had a strong season on Hacks and could coattail off being in the reigning Best Comedy Series winner. Plus: Could Marcello Hernandez be the new Bowen Yang? ‘Awards Magnet': Our updated Emmy predictions — for the last time together
With just one week left to go in the 2024-25 Emmy cycle, Awards Magnet hosts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here with another round of predictions — for the final time together. Sadly, this is Chris' last episode of Awards Magnet — an end of an era! — but he's going out with a bang with a new set of predictions. He's back on The Four Seasons train, but has forsaken one of his favorites from Hacks despite this week's major episode. This week also marked the end of the first season of The Studio and saw the release of The Bear Season 4 trailer. Season 4 is eligible next year, of course, but hope springs eternal for those who feel a good fourth season will boost Season 3's Emmy chances. If you know the game, you can kind of figure out how the season will conclude. The show is in third place in the Best Drama Series odds, behind Severance and The Pitt, but it has more in common with the latter than the former in many ways. Meanwhile, after a terrific flashback episode last week, Pedro Pascal feels right back in the hunt. While his category placement is still TBD, he has fallen to fourth place in the Best Drama Actor odds since his character Joel was killed in the second episode.
