Everything Deion Sanders said at Big 12 football media days
Colorado head coach Deion Sanders took the stage on the second day of Big 12 Media Days, and in Coach Prime fashion, he made his presence known. He answered questions from media outlets from all over the Big 12 and delivered strong statements about his team, the conference's future, and college football. Here's what Coach Prime had to say during his press conference and the coaches roundtable panel at Big 12 media days. Opening statement "Brett Yormark, I love you, man, I appreciate ya. I think we have the best commissioner, I don't think, I know we have the best commissioner in college football... I love you to life, brother and I know you somewhere clean as the board of health right now." "Coaches of the Big 12 are incredible. I love them. They've been calling, checking in on me, making sure I'm straight. But you talk about knowing football, teaching football, communicating with their of jealously. I love the coaches of the Big 12. I want to beat them all, but I love them. I truly do." On instilling strength in the program through health issues "First of all, I trust God with all my mind, all my soul and everything I have. I never waver. I never say why me, regardless of what's ahead of me or what I see. Like, lord just use me. If you can use anything, you could use me. So, I'm truly thankful. I'm truly a go-getter. I want to win at all costs. I want to win the right way. I want to set the right standards, and when I prepare the young men for life, not just football, I want them to be professional." Challenges of health issues "Athletic, sometimes y'all be on that bull junk. So, I'm not going to tell you much. You know that. But I'm not here to talk about my health. I'm here to talk about my team," Coach Prime said. "Average day? I'm looking good. I'm living lovely." On Colorado's wide receiver room "They are unbelievable. They are awesome. I can't wait to unleash them. They're great. Now you've got to understand they're replacing some all four of them will be in a professional these young men are unbelievable. I can't wait 'til the world gets a glimpse of these receivers. We have some youngsters from freshmen on up that can flat out go get it. And I'm proud of our recruits, our coaches. I'm proud of what we brought into Boulder, Colorado. On the quarterback battle between Julian "JuJu" Lewis and Kaidon Salter "As long as they're doing their jobs and we're winning, we definitely want to continue to develop JuJu. But Kaidon is unbelievable. Kaidon's off the chain. He's been there, done that. He can get the job done. I wouldn't have brought him here if I didn't trust him. But JuJu is coming around the mountain when he comes. And I love him. I love what he brings to the table. I don't know how it's gonna play out. As long as it plays out, we can't lose either way with either of those two. On Texas Tech's portal additions "Joey got some money! Joey, where ya at baby?! Spendin' that money! I love it. I love it. Once upon a time, you guys were talking junk about me going in that portal. Now, when everybody goes into the portal, it's ok. It's cool when they do it, but it's a problem when I do it." On long-term plans based on Big 12's growth "I started this by saying I love our commissioner and I love our [athletic director], and they provided a luxury of growth and unity and respect. Our long-term plans are to win. Our short-term plans are to win. I have a simple formula. Like 40/40/20. Grad transfers, transfers and high school kids. So I stick to what we do. What we know works for us. It may not work for somebody else, but it works for us. And it's been working for us." On Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham "Coach Dillingham is unbelievable. He's a dear friend. We go way back. I thought we were going to have the opportunities to coach together at one point. But he's excelled, man. And what he did last season was un-darn-believable. I didn't get jealous. I didn't get sensitive. I was just proud of it because you know we were virgins together coming into the Big 12." "So I'm thankful for the Pac-12 and the Big 12. So I'm thankful he did the dog-gone thing that was unbelievable and now he's soaring and I'm just happy, man,...I want to see everybody win except when they play us. But I'm proud of coach Dillingham and what his relationship with hose kids and young men." On expectations for the season "We want to win. We want to win at all costs. We want to be in that championship game, not here at the star, but over at that other big house that Jerry [Jones] has built. That's what we want to do. And that's what we're gearing up for. That's all we're playing for. We play to win. We don't just play to compete." On his theme music this season "I got to feel it man. I got to get a feeling for the team. I got to get a feeling for how they move, how they work and what they want. Their needs. I just got to get a feeling for it. See I'm old school not an old fool. But I got to adapt to what's now and what's current." On his first game against TCU in 2023 "It was everything. It was like the genesis of my coaching career in major college football. It was the genesis of using Travis [Hunter] and Shedeur [Sanders] and some of the players that we featured in our program. and It was phenomenal. I am excited about coming back to Texas to play because this is my second home now. But I absolutely love it." On what he would change about college football "What I would change in college football it has to be and they are trying to implement it. It has to be a salary cap on this because it's going crazy, and nobody knows where it's going to land or where it's going to end. And you have so many different doors. It's like I would see a player that say he got an offer from another school And I'm trying to figure out, why you guys haven't investigated it and how is that possible when the guys not in the portal? How is that? Now, that was one of my players, you guys would be all over it. I'm still trying to figure out how can somebody say 'you got a five million dollar offer?' How? and the kid is not in the portal. So, I think we need to be upright and upstanding." Deion Sanders Doesn't Provide Updates On Health, Colorado's QB Battle
Deion Sanders was in his usual form when he met with reporters at Big 12 Media Days on Wednesday, exuding his typical charisma while at the podium. However, the Colorado coach didn't provide updates on his health. Sanders said he wanted to keep the focus on his football team when he was asked about the challenges he's faced as he's been away from the program for the last couple of months due to an unknown health issue. "Average day, I'm looking good. I'm living lovely," Sanders told reporters. "God has truly blessed me. Not a care in the world. Not a want or desire in the world." While he was coy about his health status, Sanders thanked Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark and the rest of the conference's coaches for checking up on him during his recent struggles. "I love them, they've been calling and checking on me, making sure I'm straight," Sanders said. Sanders, who'll turn 58 in early August, missed Colorado's annual summer camps in June due to the undisclosed health issue and has been spending time at his home in Texas. Big 12 Media Days were held in Frisco, which is roughly 90 minutes away from Sanders' residence in Canton, Texas. The only information Sanders has shared about the illness came when he appeared on former NFL player Asante Samuel's podcast in late May. As Samuel wished Sanders well, the Colorado coach said what he was "dealing with right now is at a whole 'nother level" and that he had lost 14 pounds. Still, Sanders said he planned to return to coaching whenever the illness subsided. Sanders certainly spoke like someone who would be back on the sideline for the upcoming season on Wednesday, fielding numerous questions over his near-20-minute-long press conference. In terms on-field matters, the biggest question surrounding Colorado is its quarterback situation. Colorado brought both Kaidon Salter and Julian "JuJu" Lewis to Big 12 Media Days this week, with Sanders saying he hasn't decided which one of the two will replace his son yet. "We brought both of them because we don't know which one is going to start," Sanders said. In a follow-up, Sanders said there would be situations where he would feel comfortable playing both quarterbacks. "As long as they're doing their jobs and winning," Sanders said. "We definitely want to continue to develop JuJu. But Kaidon is unbelievable. Kaidon is off the chain. He's been there, done that and he can get the job done. I wouldn't have brought him here if I didn't trust him. But JuJu is coming around the mountain when he comes. I love him. I love what he brings to the table. "I don't know how it's going to play out, as long as it plays out. We can't lose either way, with either of those two." Salter was one of the top quarterbacks to transfer this past offseason. The former Liberty quarterback is 20-4 all-time as a starter, winning Conference USA's Most Valuable Player in 2023 as he helped the Flames go 13-0 before losing in the Fiesta Bowl. He threw for 1,886 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions to go with 587 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns in 11 games last season. Lewis, meanwhile, was widely viewed as one of the best quarterback prospects in the 2025 recruiting class. The incoming freshman was ranked as the 10th-best quarterback in the class by 247 Sports. Sanders also weighed in on larger matters throughout the college football landscape on Wednesday. When he was asked about his relationship with Texas Tech head Joey McGuire, Sanders ribbed his counterpart for the recent spending the program has done to land top transfers and recruits. "Joey got some money! Joey, where you at, baby? Spending that money! I love it," Sanders said with a wide grin. "Once upon a time, you guys was talking junk about me going in that portal. Now, when everyone go in the portal, it's OK. It's cool when they do it. It's a problem when I do it." Sanders later said "I love me some Joey McGuire," praising him for how he handled Texas Tech fans when they threw tortillas during Colorado's game against the Red Raiders in Lubbock last season. Still, Texas Tech has formed a squad that will likely threaten to try and take Colorado down from one of the top spots in the Big 12 in 2025 and beyond. The Red Raiders landed the No. 2 class in the transfer portal this offseason, via 247 Sports, reportedly spending more than $10 million to do so. Texas Tech also agreed to a lucrative revenue-sharing deal with 2026 five-star recruit Felix Ojo earlier in July. Texas Tech's deal with Ojo was made possible after the approval of the House v. NCAA settlement in June, which allowed schools and student-athletes to agree to revenue-sharing deals starting on July 1. The approval of the lawsuit brought further questions about the future of college sports as schools will be allowed to spend roughly $20.5 million in revenue-sharing deals with student athletes for the 2025-26 academic year. In his first comments since the approval of the lawsuit, Sanders iterated that he'd like to see a salary cap be implemented in college football moving forward. "That's what the NFL does," Sanders said. "The problem is, you've got a guy that's not that darn school and you could give him a half-million dollars and you can't compete with that. That don't make sense. "All you have to do is look at the playoffs and see what those teams spent, and you understand darn near well why they're in the playoffs. It's kind of hard to compete with somebody that's giving $25, $30 million to a freshman class. It's crazy. We're not complaining. … But what's going on right now don't make sense." Aerosoles platform sandals available in a slew of gorgeous colors. They prove that a little block heel, when paired with a platform sole and secure strap, can provide an abundance of cushy comfort that's also uber stylish. DSW Promising review:"So comfortable! These shoes are going to be worn every day this summer. They are sooo easy to walk in. I am a city commuter and always looking for shoes that look cute, but I can still walk a few miles to and from work or out for drinks. The straps and buckle are very sturdy, and the block heel is very helpful [when] walking on cobbly sidewalks. I did size down to a 7.5 from an 8 as other reviews suggested, and they fit perfectly." — JuJu 2. Cross-banded flats designed with a unique shape in a high-quality faux leather that your piggies will love. This style is just delicious for spring days; I can already feel the happiness coming from your feet. DSW Promising review:"Comfortable from the first day I wore them, I'd highly recommend these sandals. They look great with a maxi skirt or a pair of pants. Now that the weather is warm here, they're my go-to shoe." — Shell 3. Adidas VL Court platform sneakers created with a sturdy sole and available in a spring-ready shade that's going to kick your sneaker game up a notch — literally. 4. Or Puma Palermo sneakers so sleek and versatile with their mix of suede and leather details, you'll not only be able to pair them with jeans, dresses, and skirts, but you'll also feel cloud-9-type comfort with every step you take. DSW Promising review:"I LOVE these shoes! I got them in 4 colors and get compliments anywhere I go. They are comfortable — I wear them all day at work." — Jilly 9. Toms platform sandals if you favor some lift without the discomfort of a high heel, look no further than these supportive gems. They feature a breathable feel, cotton upper, adjustable strap, and OrthoLite insoles that'll have you exclaiming, "Heaven is a place on earth!" DSW Promising review:"Buy them — just do it! I bought these for my trip to Spain because I wanted something cute but still comfortable. I wore these for 10 days straight, walking about 6–7 miles per day (cobblestone streets, up and down hills, etc) and they were fantastic!! They are so lightweight and my feet only would get kind of sore at the end of the day (which they do with sneakers too). I'd recommend breaking them in first before anything big because I did get a small blister on the back of each of my heels, but nothing Band-Aids couldn't fix. I'm usually a size 8.5, but ordered a size 9 in these and I'm glad I did. I'm actually ordering another pair because I love them that much!" — Cmac 10. Crocs slide sandals available in a bunch of fun hues that'll cradle your feet and provide grip and support, whether you're walking around your house, taking your pup on a stroll, or chasing that golden hour light on a beach vacay. DSW 11. Or some classic Crocs clogs in case existing fans could use an additional shade to add to their weekly mix. Boasting breathability, support, and a pivoting strap for easy access, you won't regret snagging this cloud-like comfort, whether you're new to Crocs or a staunch supporter. DSW 12. Stylish Naturalizer sandals just tremendous if you have wider feet and are looking for a little lift, without feeling like you're walking on stilts. Plus, they come with the brand's signature cushioned footbed and fancy "Contour+ Comfort" technology. Ooh la la. DSW Promising review:"I have chronic pain; these heels are the most comfortable I've ever worn. I used to have to place sticky foam pads underneath all the strap locations, along with foam pads on the insole and heel. Not with these! They are the right height for formal events, but can still be worn casually. Get them! I'm going to get more colors" — Helena 13. Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Move high-top sneakers highly regarded for good reason. With a near-perfect 4.8/5-star rating, hundreds of reviewers rave that the platform sole adds cushy comfort and support that'll equip them for long days spent on their feet. Translation: these have "music-festival-ready" written all over them. DSW Promising review:"I bought these on a whim for a weekend away. I wore them for 10 straight hours the first day and never once had a problem. They are extremely comfortable and so lightweight. I was expecting them to be heavy but they're not at all. I wear them as a hairstylist on my feet for 10-12 hours a day with no issues." — Ahend 14. Close-toe wedge pumps that say, "No pinching or rubbing the piggies here!" Designed with a stretchy fabric upper and criss-cross straps for some extra pizzazz, they are the perfect balance of comfort and style. DSW Promising review:"Not a hurt toe in the bunch! These are so comfortable to wear. They look stylish, have me a few inches taller off the ground but are so so comfortable." — Claude 15. Mesh Mary Janes available in a polka-dot and leopard print, as well as a pearl-encrusted style for the ultimate Cinderella slipper moment (sans uncomfy heel). DSW 16. These are amazing Toms shoes with a great grippy sole, an extra couple of inches of height, and the classic comfort of the Toms slip-on shoe. Just a better rubber sole! 10/10 would recommend!" — Wendy 18. Block heels with a minimal strap if you're committed to wearing high heels — even for extended periods of time — we see you, and we commend you. Featuring a 4-inch lift and a cushioned footbed, reviewers note that their look and comfort don't disappoint at weddings and semi-formal events. DSW 19. Lucky Brand buckled boots for anyone still lamenting the end of Brat Summer. These will keep the vibe alive for music festivals and edgy spring dressing. Traipsing around in these will not only look ultra stylish, but they'll also feel ultra supportive, with their low heel and practical grip. DSW 20. I've received many compliments from both men and women when wearing them. Love them so much I have since bought a second pair to have on hand as a backup for when I wear out the first pair." — Mouse 22. Or some Merrell trail shoes for an attractive lower-rise, sneaker-esque hiking shoe if you'd prefer to leave some breathing room around your ankles. You can comfortably put a few miles on these, since they're a silhouette that'll hug your feet without the pinch. DSW 24. Adjustable Velcro-strap sandals featuring faux suede in pastel hues, perfect for those on the go looking to embrace a spring-ready palette from head to toe. These are lightweight, supportive, and secure for strolls of every kind. DSW Promising review:"I love the fact that I can adjust all parts on my foot with the velcro and they are beautiful as well and very comfortable." — Jeannie 25. Their stylishly stretchy upper conforms to your foot, so whether you have bunions or just require some flexibility, these won't have your dogs barking by the end of the day.
