Israeli military recovers bodies of two hostages held by Hamas
Israel's military recovered the bodies of two hostages, Judi Weinstein-Haggai and Gad Haggai, who were held by Hamas, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday. The Israeli army said in a statement that the bodies of the husband and wife were recovered in a special operation from Khan Younis area in the Gaza Strip. Following the recovery of two bodies, 56 hostages are still held by Hamas, with fewer than half believed to be alive, according to Israeli estimates. Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza following the October 7, 2023 assault in which Hamas-led gunmen killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostages, by Israeli tallies. Bodies of two U.S. hostages recovered in Israeli military operation in Gaza
Israeli special forces recovered the bodies of two American hostages who were held in Gaza, the Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet intelligence service announced Thursday. Why it matters: Judi Weinstein-Haggai and Gad Haggai from Kibbutz Nir Oz were murdered during the Oct. 7 attack while they were on their morning walk. Their bodies were held by a Hamas 0ff-shoot called "The Mujahideen Brigades" for more than 600 days. The remains of 36 additional hostages are still believed to be held in Gaza, including Americans Itay Chen and Omer Neutra. Driving the news: The IDF and Shin Bet said the operation to recover their bodies was conducted on Wednesday night by special forces acting on precise intelligence. State of play: The Trump administration is still negotiating with Israel and Hamas over a new Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal, but talks are deadlocked.
