NYCFC beats Orlando, 2-1 as Martínez scores in stoppage time, Freese has 6 saves
Alonso Martínez scored in stoppage time to help New York City FC rally and beat Orlando City 2-1 on Wednesday night. Orlando (9-6-8) is winless four straight. Julián Fernández, on the counter-attack, played a ball-ahead to a sprinting Martínez, who outraced the defense and then beat goalkeeper Pedro Gallese — who moved to the edge of the penalty area — with a rolling shot inside the right post in the first minute of stoppage time. NYCFC (10-8-4) scored on Kyle Smith's own goal to make it 1-1 in the 87th minute. Fernández played a corner kick in to the center of the area and Andrés Perea's header to the back post was parried by diving Gallese but redirected teammate Rodrigo Schlegel's clearance attempt into the net. Matt Freese stopped six shots for New York City. Robin Jansson scored his first goal of the season to give Orlando a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute. Martín Ojeda played a corner kick to the back post that was centered by David Brekalo's header before Jannson played the ball high off his chest and bounced a volley into the net from point-blank range. Ojeda joined Luís Carlos "Nani" Almeida da Cunha (2019) as the only players in club history to produce at least 10 goals and 10 assists in a single season. Orlando outshot NYCFC 25-11, 7-4 on target. Gallese finished with three saves. New York City also beat Orlando 2-1 at home on March 8.

Dodgers recall Alexis Diaz to join bullpen
July 8 - The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Alexis Diaz, the former All-Star closer they acquired from the Cincinnati Reds in May, ahead of their road game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday. Manager Dave Roberts confirmed to reporters that Diaz would be active on Tuesday. In a corresponding move, Los Angeles optioned right-hander Julian Fernandez. Los Angeles traded minor league right-hander Mike Vilani to Cincinnati on May 29 for Diaz, who has since pitched 4 2/3 innings across six appearances for Triple-A Oklahoma City. Diaz allowed five runs, walked seven batters and struck out three. Diaz, 28, was an All-Star selection in 2023 but lost his closer role in Cincinnati to Emilio Pagan earlier this season. He has appeared in just six big-league games in 2025 and allowed eight runs over six innings for a 12.00 ERA. The Reds optioned Diaz to Triple-A on May 1. Before his rough patch, Diaz amassed 75 saves and an 18-14 record over his first three major league seasons, all with Cincinnati. He owns a career 3.21 ERA. Fernandez, 29, was recalled and made his team debut Monday, yielding two runs on two hits in two innings of mop-up work in the Dodgers' 9-1 loss to Milwaukee. The ailing Dodgers, losers of four straight, could use all the help they can get. They have been outscored 38-7 during their current slide, and their bullpen ranks 24th in the major leagues in ERA (4.46). --Field Level Media

Dodgers to Call Up Flame-Throwing Reliever Julian Fernandez Ahead of Brewers Series
Dodgers to Call Up Flame-Throwing Reliever Julian Fernandez Ahead of Brewers Series originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Dodgers are among the best teams in the majors this 2025 MLB season. However, after being swept by the Houston Astros this past weekend, changes are coming to the bullpen. Advertisement Los Angeles have had to make significant changes to the rotation and the bullpen due to injuries and poor play. Ahead of their series against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Dodgers are, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, calling up Julian Fernandez to the Major League roster. The flame-throwing righty hadn't played in the Major Leagues since 2021 when he pitched 6.2 innings with a 10.80 ERA and a 1.95 WHIP in six appearances. Fernandez has lived in Triple-A with multiple organizations since his brief stint in the Majors four years ago. He spent the 2023 season in the Toronto Blue Jays farm system before heading to the Mexican League with the Estrellas Orientales. Advertisement But in 2025, the 29-year-old joined the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate and has pitched in 24 games this season. In his 24 outings, he has a 4.08 ERA through 28.2 innings with 32 strikeouts and a 1.50 WHIP. Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts (30) walks to the mound for a pitching change in the eighth inning against the Houston Astros at Dodger Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images One of the benefits for the Dodgers in selecting Fernandez to the 40-man roster is his flexibility. He has multiple options remaining, meaning the Dodgers can call him up to the Majors and send him back down to the minors multiple times this season if they need to. While not the only change the Dodgers are making ahead of the Brewers series, it's intriguing. If the flame-throwing righty can find a groove in the Majors with the Dodgers, he could be a real bullpen piece for Los Angeles down the stretch.
