Cordero and Gomez Kodela retire as Pumas winners after thumping Uruguay
SALTA, Argentina (AP) — Argentina sent Santiago Cordero and Francisco Gomez Kodela into retirement as winners after beating up Uruguay 52-17 on Saturday. Cordero, 12 years after his test debut, came off the bench and scored a try just moments after tighthead prop Gomez Kodela walked off in his last professional match at age 41, the oldest to ever play for the Pumas. They contributed to an eight-try victory to uphold the Pumas' unbeaten record against Uruguay — now 31-0 — and rebound from a humbling two-series loss at home to England. The Pumas started with a second-minute penalty try then bombed at least three more chances before 92-cap center Matias Moroni, the only backline starter with more than nine caps, broke a couple of tackles to score in injury time and break a 7-7 deadlock. Argentina reset at halftime and dominated the second half. Captain Julian Montoya plunged for a try off a ruck and that was Gomez Kodela's moment to leave to applause, then vice-captain Cordero touched down after seven minutes on the field. The move was begun by first-time starting flyhalf Nicolas Roger, who impressed. Winger Rodrigo Isgro had a try disallowed because lock Pedro Rubiolo was yellow-carded for shoulder-to-head contact in a ruck. It was upgraded on review to a 20-minute red card. Scrumhalf Santiago Alvarez's converted try narrowed the gap to seven near the hour mark, but the Pumas backs blew away Uruguay the rest of the way. Isgro scored, along with Justo Piccardo, Agustin Moyano, and Roger, who also slotted five of seven goalkicks. Argentina has the Rugby Championship next month, while Uruguay plays Paraguay next weekend to begin qualifying for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. ___ AP rugby:

Proud of the boys – George Ford hails England's attitude
England captain George Ford said he was 'proud of the boys' after a last-gap 22-17 victory over Argentina in San Juan sealed a 2-0 Test series win. Replacement scrum-half Jack van Poortvliet went over in the final minute with the score locked at 17-17 following Guy Pepper's brilliant blind-side break as England followed up last week's 35-12 win in La Plata in style. Ford, who made his 101st Test appearance for England, said: 'We found a way in the end. We had a lot of opportunities in the 22, but couldn't get over the line. 'I'm proud of the boys. I like our fight, our togetherness, showing how much we care. 'There was some great stuff, we should have scored more tries but the attitude of the group is great.' Both sides scored two tries in the first half, with Argentina twice hitting back through centre Lucio Cinti and wing Ignacio Mendy after touchdowns from England pair Seb Atkinson and Freddie Steward. In a fast and furious encounter at the Bicentenary Stadium, Santiago Carreras' first-half penalty had edged Argentina into a 17-14 interval lead, with George Ford's penalty in the second period hauling England level before Van Poortvliet's thrilling late effort. Argentina captain Julian Montoya said his side paid the price for their ill-discipline. He said: 'We were not good enough, we have to be honest with ourselves. I am sorry we couldn't get the win, we gave away too many penalties.' England forward Ben Curry was sent to the sin-bin for his high tackle on Pablo Matera in the 20th minute and Argentina made their advantage count as Cinti went over for their opening try. Argentina were reduced to 14 men in the second half when number eight Matera received a yellow card just before the hour for killing the ball at a maul just yards from his try line. Two tiring teams maintained their ferocious battle – almost entirely in Argentina's half – as the game headed into the final 10 minutes. But with the clock ticking down, replacement flanker Pepper stole clear from a maul and after charging down the blind side he turned inside to send the supporting Van Poortvliet over for the decisive score.

Van Poortvliet's late try seals 22-17 win for England in Argentina
July 12 (Reuters) - Replacement scrumhalf Jack van Poortvliet scored a try in the final minute as England claimed a 22-17 victory over hosts Argentina at the Estadio Bicentenario in San Juan on Saturday to take the series 2-0. Argentina led 17-14 at halftime and despite heavy England pressure in their 22, George Ford's penalty was the only points scored in the first 39 minutes of the second period until Van Poortvliet scampered over from a fine break by Guy Pepper. Centre Seb Atkinson and fullback Freddie Steward scored tries as England, without a host of regular players who are on tour with the British & Irish Lions in Australia, completed a memorable series win. England had lost hooker and co-captain Jamie George on the morning of the game after he was called into the Lions squad. "We found a way in the end. We had a lot of opportunities in the 22 but couldn't get over the line, I'm proud of the boys," Ford said. "I like our fight, our togetherness, showing how much we care. There was some great stuff, we should have scored more tries but the attitude of the group is great." Centre Lucio Cinti and wing Ignacio Mendy crossed for scores for Argentina, who had to weather heavy England pressure in the second half and could not see the game out for at least a draw. "We were not good enough, we have to be honest with ourselves. I am sorry we couldn't get the win, we gave away too many penalties," Argentina captain Julian Montoya said. Argentina number eight Pablo Matera did become the most capped player in his country's history in his 111th appearance, though it was marked with a second half yellow card. The tourists made a fast start and had a try inside four minutes as Ford's pinpoint cross field kick allowed Atkinson to score. England were reduced to 14 players when Ben Curry was penalised for a high tackle and while he was off the field, scrum-half Simon Benitez Cruz managed to hold on to a loose ball and release Cinti to dot down. England showed excellent handling skills to score their second try as they pulled Argentina defenders into a narrow formation that allowing Steward to canter over in the corner. Argentina scored their second try on the stroke of halftime as Steward failed to deal with a chip over the England backline as the ball nicked the post and fell kindly for Mendy to dot down for a 17-14 lead. Ford's penalty was reward for heavy English pressure early in the second half as he levelled the score. Argentina were having difficulty with their exits from their own 22, which meant they were constantly under pressure, and it tolled as Pepper broke and fed Van Poortvliet to snatch victory at the death.

Matera to become most capped Argentina player against England
July 10 (Reuters) - Argentina have made seven changes to their side for the second test against England, and moved Pablo Matera from flanker to the back of the scrum where he will earn a record 111th international cap for the hosts in San Juan on Saturday. A depleted England without their British & Irish Lions players outplayed their hosts in a comprehensive 35-12 victory last Saturday to ensure they keep their record of never having lost a series to Argentina. Home coach Felipe Contepomi has made three changes to the backline with wings Matias Moroni and Ignacio Mendy coming into the side to form a back three with Benjamin Elizalde. Simon Benitez Cruz also returns to scrumhalf to partner flyhalf Santiago Carreras, with the centre pairing made up of Justo Piccardo and Lucio Cinti. Matera's move to number eight means Santiago Grondona is promoted from the bench to start, with Juan Martin Gonzalez the other flanker. Guido Petti and Pedro Rubiolo are in the second row. Matera takes over from former hooker Agustin Creevy as Argentina's most capped player of all time. Hooker Julian Montoya will captain the side again and has props Thomas Gallo and Francisco Gomez Kodela either side of him.
