Lifelong Fan of Princess Diana Mortgages Home Four Times to Purchase Items Connected to Royal

A chance encounter at age 12 with Princess Diana set Renae Plant on her lifelong mission to assemble a veritable museum of the late style icon's most memorable outfits. In fact, Renae mortgaged her home for the fourth time to secure 35 items connected to Di at the recent Princess Diana's Style & A Royal Collection sale in L.A., held by Julien's Auctions. She bid nearly $700,000 on a single dress: the famous Caring Dress (pictured), which the People's Princess wore during her second Australian tour in 1988. Renae's love for the late princess began with their run-in during Diana's first Australian tour in 1983. Renae skipped school to go to a factory in Yandina, Queensland, Australia, where Diana and then-Prince Charles were touring. Renae was shocked when Di saw her, made a bee-line and shook her hand. 'I was so enamored when I saw her … she was so beautiful,' recalls Renae, now 54. Mesmerized, the young girl ducked under a barricade and walked behind a procession of guards and ladies in waiting. It was then she noticed Diana had dropped a clay platypus someone had given her. 'I ran over to the police and said, 'Lady Di dropped this,'' Renae shares. 'He looked at me and said, 'She must have dropped this to give to you.' That tiny platypus sent me on a trajectory I could never have imagined.' All of the Diana items Renae has acquired over the years can be seen online at The Princess & The Platypus Foundation's Princess Diana Museum, named after Renae's run-in with Di, of course. Today, the museum contains 'tens and tens of millions' of dollars' worth of items. The roughly 2,730 pieces include the 1991 Versace dress Di wore on the cover of Harper's Bazaar and a pair of stunning diamond-and-pearl earrings given to the princess by Queen Elizabeth herself. Renae's recent auction win also includes the famed Falcon Dress, a custom cream silk crepe embroidered evening gown designed by Catherine Walker and worn by Diana on her 1986 Gulf Tour. The Di devotee is glad to have added the items to her collection. 'I feel so blessed to be able to preserve Diana's legacy,' Renae says. 'I truly believe she was looking over us. She knew those pieces had to end up in the Princess Diana Museum. Angels were looking over me, and I know she was one of them for sure.' Solve the daily Crossword

‘American Empire? What American Empire?' You Can Ask With This Reagan-Adjacent Stormtrooper Helmet

To be a kid in the 1980s meant absorbing the last years of the Cold War through pop culture that played into fears about a World War III everyone assumed was coming—think WarGames, Red Dawn, and '99 Luftballoons.' Somehow that script got flipped when President Ronald Reagan announced the 'Strategic Defense Initiative,' a system intended to protect the U.S. from missiles that quickly acquired its own pop culture nickname: 'Star Wars.' While Reagan's Star Wars never actually got off the ground, it remains a key takeaway from his time in office, so much so that the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Southern California hosted an exhibit framed around it last year: 'Defending America and the Galaxy: Star Wars and SDI.' The library called it 'a fun and informative exhibition on Star Wars—both the real-world technology of SDI, as well as items from the movie phenomenon,' showcasing 'original items from SDI including an authentic Command Launch Equipment Console, as well as props, costumes, and concept art from the Star Wars franchise.' That strange blend of politics (nuclear war, so fun!) and science fiction is no longer on display, but one of the key items featured is now going up for sale. A screen-used Stormtrooper helmet from Star Wars: Episode I – A New Hope would be a rare enough find, but according to Julien's Auctions, it's one of just six original stunt helmets still around being held by private collectors. Now it can be yours if you have the $200,000-$300,000 (estimated price) required to be the top bidder. Here's a full, uncropped look at the helmet: Further details from a press release note that 'this helmet is believed to be featured in scenes on Tatooine as a 'Sandtrooper' helmet and may have been worn by the third Stormtrooper guard from the left, escorting Princess Leia to be confronted by the ominous Darth Vader.' Julien's is co-hosting the auction, dubbed 'Echoes From the Galaxy: A Star Wars Memorabilia Exhibit + Auction,' with Turner Classic Movies, and if you're going to San Diego Comic-Con or you happen to be in the San Diego area, you can cruise by the Comic-Con Museum (2131 Pan American Plaza in San Diego) to check out the exhibit starting July 14. The sale will be Sunday, July 27 starting at 10 a.m. PT. Here's a video about the auction that quickly shows off some of the other lots, including the lightsabers. You can get a closer look at the Julien's Auction website, which also has all the details on how to bid. Want more io9 news? Tony Hawk puts his history-making '900' skateboard up for auction

Other items up for sale include Hawk's signed helmet, knee pads, sneakers, and the 1999 X Games Vert Finals bronze medal. PHOTO: AFP LOS ANGELES – Skateboarding great Tony Hawk has announced that he is putting his most famous deck up for auction with the goal of raising money to build skateparks in underserved areas. Hawk landed his groundbreaking '900' – 2½ full mid-air rotations – at the 1999 X Games in a moment that helped propel the sport out of the subculture and into the mainstream. The Birdhouse 'Falcon 2' board is expected to fetch between US$500,000 and US$700,000 (S$636,000 and S$891,000) when it goes on the block in Los Angeles on Sept 23, according to Julien's Auctions. A Julien's Auctions spokesperson said: 'This skateboard represents not just a milestone in sports, but a cultural moment that inspired generations.' Likewise, Hawk called the moment he became the first skateboarder to land the trick in front of a roaring X Games crowd after several failed attempts on June 27, 1999 'the best day of my life'. 'It was a huge moment in my career – the result of years of persistence and getting back up after every fall,' the 57-year-old said in a press release. Other items up for sale include Hawk's signed helmet, knee pads, sneakers, and the 1999 X Games Vert Finals bronze medal. 'I never imagined that my board, pads or helmet from that day would be of any interest to collectors,' he said. 'A portion of the proceeds from the sale will benefit The Skatepark Project (TSP), the foundation I started to help communities build safe and inclusive skateparks in underserved areas, where young people can experience the same freedom and confidence that skateboarding offered me.' TSP grant programs have awarded over US$13 million to help fund nearly 700 public skateparks in all 50 US states, enjoyed by an estimated 17 million people annually, according to the non-profit organisation's website.
