Court Dismisses Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.'s Pleas To Avoid Arrest Amid Deportation
Last Updated: Boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was arrested in LA for alleged drug trafficking ties and faces deportation. Mexico's attorney general's office has announced that a court has so far dismissed boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.'s requests to avoid arrest if he is deported from the United States, where he was detained for alleged drug trafficking connections. Chavez, a former world champion and son of the legendary Mexican fighter Julio Cesar Chavez, was arrested on Wednesday in Los Angeles after authorities determined he was in the country illegally. His defence attorneys have submitted 'five or six injunctions" to secure his release upon his arrival in Mexico, Attorney General Alejandro Gertz stated at a press conference on Sunday. These injunctions were denied because Chavez has not yet been handed over to Mexican authorities, Gertz explained. Chavez's deportation could be decided at an immigration hearing, which, according to the defence team, is scheduled for Monday. Chavez, whose sports career is waning at the age of 39, is alleged to have ties to the Sinaloa cartel, one of six Mexican drug trafficking groups designated as terrorist organisations by the United States. Following his arrest, US authorities announced on Thursday that they were processing his 'expedited removal" and referred to the charges against him in Mexico. The attorney general's office confirmed in a statement after his arrest last week that Mexico had issued an arrest warrant for Chavez in 2023 'for organised crime and arms trafficking." Chavez's defence team has denied the accusations, claiming his arrest is intended to 'terrorise the community" amid raids against undocumented migrants. Chavez's arrest came just days after his lopsided loss to YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in a cruiserweight bout before a sell-out crowd at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. This allowed Jake Paul to break into official cruiserweight rankings, making him eligible to challenge for the title. Once a top-rated boxer, Chavez won the WBC middleweight world title in 2011 and defended it successfully three times. However, his career has taken a steep dive since. He holds a record of 54-7 with one draw, but his career has also been marred by multiple suspensions and fines for failed drug tests. With AFP Inputs First Published: July 07, 2025, 13:14 IST

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. detained by ICE for deportation days after Jake Paul loss
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has been detained on a federal arrest warrant less than one week after his loss to Jake Paul. In a statement issued Thursday by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), it was announced ICE has detained the boxer and is processing him for expedited removal from the U.S. "Chavez is a Mexican citizen who has an active arrest warrant in Mexico for his involvement in organized crime and trafficking firearms, ammunition, and explosives," the statement read. DHS said Chavez entered the country legally in August 2023 but his B2 tourist visa expired in February 2024. It added Chavez applied for a lawful permanent resident status based on his marriage to a citizen, who previously had a relationship with the son of cartel leader Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. In December 2024, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services referred the matter to ICE, calling Chavez a "public safety threat." In January 2025, Chavez was allowed to reenter the country with temporary parole permission. After what DHS called "multiple fraudulent statements on his application to become a lawful permanent resident," it designated his citizenship status unlawful and him removable on June 27. Chavez, 39, is the son of boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez. While his come-up attracted eyeballs from around the combat sports world and beyond, Chavez has had an up-and-down career in and out of the ring. After a 46-0 start, Chavez has gone 8-7. His unanimous decision loss to Paul was only his second fight since 2021. Chavez has a history of arrests for DUI, driving without a license and various weapon illegalities.
