Did you miss July's Buck Moon peak? Here's what to expect Friday night over California
July's "Buck Moon" has already peaked this week, but for a few more days, folks in California can look up to see the nearly full moon in the sky. July's full moon, known as Buck Moon, peaked on the evening of Thursday, July 10. However, according to NASA, the moon will remain full for a couple of days and be visible to the naked eye. On Friday night, the moon is expected to rise at 9:34 p.m. over California and set at 6:26 a.m. Unlike Strawberry Moon or Blood Moon, when the moon appears big, bright and almost a different color in the sky, Buck Moon is simply the nickname for July's full moon phase. The moon itself doesn't turn a different hue. Here's what to know about Buck Moon, even though its peak has passed. July's buck full moon: 4 zodiac signs could receive 'keys to a better life' The full moon peaked on the evening of Thursday, July 10, but folks will still be able to see the full moon through the weekend before it begins to wax. July's full moon coincides with when male deer antlers are at peak growth. Male deer grow their antlers in late spring, growing as fast as 1/4 of an inch per day or one and a half inches per week, according to the Farmers' Almanac. The lengthening daylight in spring triggers deer's hormones to start this growth. By July, deer antlers can be spotted in full velvet, which is when the antlers are covered in a soft, hairy skin due to the rapid growth phase of the bones. Deer lose this velvety coating in the fall during mating season, according to the Farmers' Almanac. The next full moon, known as Sturgeon Moon, will occur on Saturday, Aug. 9. The Full Buck Moon Rises Thursday night
Summer nights are always a little nicer when the moon grows full, and that's happening right now. The Full Buck Moon will reach its peak illumination Thursday night, July 10th. The moon will rise above the horizon at about 9 pm, skimming low on the horizon before setting at 6:30 Friday morning. This low arc in the sky is caused by the tilt of the Earth and its orientation between the sun and the moon. What's interesting is that the low arc in the sky mimics the low arc in the sky the sun takes 6 months prior, during the heart of winter. The full moon in July is named for deer because it's a time of the year when male deer antlers are rapidly growing. The July full moon also goes by other names like the Hay Moon or the Thunder Moon. A buck moon will peak over KY, then a popular meteor shower. When to see it all
A full 'buck' moon will peak over Kentucky soon, and residents can also catch the beginnings of a popular meteor shower later this month. July's full moon is known as the buck moon because this time of year is when a male deer's antlers are in full-growth mode, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. Alternative names for the July moon include 'Feather Moulting Moon' (Cree) and 'Salmon Moon' (Tlingit), the almanac reports. Many moon names come from Indigenous cultures, and the Old Farmer's Almanac also uses names from Colonial American and European sources, the publication reports. In addition to the buck moon, July will bring the beginning of the Perseid meteor shower, which the American Meteor Society describes as 'the most popular meteor shower' of the year. The Perseid shower will be active Monday, July 14 to Monday, Sept. 1, peaking around Tuesday, Aug. 12 or Wednesday, Aug. 13. The waning gibbous moon is expected to reduce the shower's visibility this year, so you might only be able to see the Perseid's brightest meteors. Here's when to see this year's buck moon over Kentucky, plus when to catch more full moons in 2025. The buck moon will peak at 4:37 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time Thursday, July 10, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. Since the sun will be up at that time, you'll likely get a better view later in the evening. AccuWeather's forecast says the night of July 10 will be partly cloudy and humid in Lexington, with a low temperature of 69 degrees Fahrenheit. The moon generally appears full the day before and after its peak illumination. For those planning to stargaze the night of Wednesday, July 9, you can expect a shower in the evening with 'clouds breaking,' AccuWeather reports, and the night of Friday, July 11 will be clear. The moon will rise over Fayette County at 9:26 p.m. July 10, according to online clock Time and Date. After the buck moon, stargazers will have five more opportunities to see a full moon this year. Here's when to look, from Saturday, Aug. 9: Sturgeon moon Sunday, Sept. 7: Corn moon Monday, Oct. 6: Hunter's moon (supermoon) Wednesday, Nov. 5: Beaver moon (supermoon) Thursday, Dec. 4: Cold moon (supermoon) The Bluegrass Amateur Astronomy Club will host a stargazing event Saturday, July 19 at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill and another Saturday, July 26 at Raven Run Nature Sanctuary.
