KUCHING (July 15): Chung Hua Mile 4 1/2 Primary School and SMK Kuching High lifted the primary school and secondary school titles respectively for the third consecutive year at the Kuching Division Wushu Championships on Sunday. The two-day competition held at Aeon Mall Kuching Central saw Chung Hua Mile 4 1/2 on top with 37 gold, 27 silver and nine bronze medals followed by Chung Hua Primary School No. 3 (16-7-10) and Chung Hua Sungai Lubak (13-4-6), Chung Hua Primary School No. 1 (11-18-39) and Chung Hua Primary School Stapok (8-12-4). The primary school champions earned more honours when Crystal Wee Yu Tang walked away with the Best Girl Athlete after she collected 24.818 points from winning golds in Girls Group B 1st International gunshu, daoshu and changquan. The Best Boy performer was Ethan Yap Tai Xen who collected 254.806 points after winning golds in Boys Group B 1st International qiangshu, jianshu and changquan. Meanwhile, SMK Kuching High proved unstoppable again amassing 18-4-1 to top the 12-team competition followed by SMK Jalan Arang (9-5-2), SMK Pending 4-0-0), Borneo International School (3-3-0) and SMK Sungai Tapang (3-2-0). The Best Boy and Best Girl awards were won by Kho Kern An of SMK DPHA Gapor, who collected 24.920 points after bagging golds in Boys Group A 3rd International nangun, nanquan and nandao, and Sharene Kiu from SMK Sungai Maong who tallied 24.729 points after winning the golds in the Girls Group B nandao, nangun and optional nanquan. A total of 208 athletes representing 36 kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools participated in the competition. Member of Parliament for Stampin Chong Chieng Jen closed the event and gave away the prizes. He also handed over a grant of RM5,000 to Jun Lun Professional Wushu Training Centre for organising the tournament. Sarawak wushu sanda team team seeks to complete historic mission at national tourney in Seremban

Two sanda athletes spar under the watchful eyes of Tsan. KUCHING (May 16): The Sarawak wushu sanda (free sparring) team is looking forward to complete a historic mission at the 14th National Youth KBS-KPM-AG Asia Wushu Championship in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan on May 29 to June 2. The seven-strong team led by state sanda head coach Tsan Nieng Khai is targeting to contribute four gold medals to the Sarawak wushu contingent, which includes 24 taolu (optional routine) athletes. Shouldering Sarawak's challenge are all new faces, who were selected during a state-wide tour headed by Tsan and coach Lyde Lait. The team comprises Maevess Choo Lee Ying (Girls U12 39kg), Leeroy Valentine Lavern (Boys U14 52kg), Max Choo Jun Howe (Boys U14 48kg), Reon Chrisson Youngle (Boys U17 60kg), Lima Jauku Youngley (Boys U13 45kg), Ar Rayyan Abdullah Hamizan (Boys U17 75kg), and Putra Irfan Dzakwan Abdul Shukri (Boys U17 48kg). 'Despite fielding new faces, l am quite confident that the athletes can pose a strong challenge and give other teams a good run for their money. 'The athletes are undergoing a intensive centralised training at MMA Hub Kuching, Boulevard Shopping Mall from May 12 to 24,' said Tsan who is also MMA Hub owner and Sarawak Mixed Martial Arts Association president. Meanwhile, the taolu team consists of Aster Dylan Tamat, Jocelyn Ha Chen Xi, John Phang, Angel Wong Jing Xuan, Darren Hii Chee Yik, Yong Jing Xing, Ellie Sia Yu Xin and Ashlynn Tou Hui Chin (Jun Wei Bintulu Wushu Club); Loh Thai Yi and Wong Xin Yi (Piasau Zhong Hua Wushu Club); Andra Chan Zhi Zheng, Bewell Chan Zhi Zui, Dexter Thian Shyan Khai, Elson Chong Jia Bao, Hong Wu Kang, and Kimberly Bong Wei Shi (Kuching Elite Wushu Club); Ashley Yong, Angus Tan Yan Hong, Amber Tan Ling Xin, Sharen Kiu, Bryan Wee Hao Quan, Ashly Ong Yee Ern, and Crystal Wee Yu Tang (Jun Lun Professional Wushu Training Centre); Elvis Lee Qi Ye (Persatuan Wushu Bahagian Mukah); as well as Hao Quan, Ashly Ong Yee Ern, and Crystal Wee Yu Tang (Jun Lun Professional Wushu Training Centre).
