Liverpool 'push for Marc Guehi' as Jarell Quansah completes Bayer Leverkusen transfer

One in one out: Liverpool want to replace Bayern Leverkusen-bound Jarell Quansah with Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi (Getty) Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah has completed his move to Bayer Leverkusen, and the Premier League champions are now pushing to sign England international Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace as his replacement. Leverkusen have leaked several stars this summer since it was announced that manager Xabi Alonso was headed to Real Madrid, with the Bundesliga side's losses including the likes of Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, both of whom departed Germany last month in favour of Merseyside. Advertisement But the club - which finished second to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and appointed ex-Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag as their new head coach in May - expressed in a statement on Wednesday that they were 'delighted' to bring in 'one of England's most promising centre-backs' for a deal reportedly worth up to £35 million, plus a potential £5m in add-ons. 'He's quick, agile and a good footballer,' Leverkusen's sporting director, Simon Rolfes, continued. The 22-year-old came up through Liverpool's academy before making his senior debut in the 2023-24 season under Jurgen Klopp. He went on to make 58 appearances in all competitions for the Reds, but fell down Arne Slot's pecking order en route to last season's league title. Quansah was, however, part of the England squad which retained their Under-21 Euros crown last week, with Liverpool likely viewing the fee recouped as good business for an academy product. Advertisement And with the deal for his departure wrapped up, plus lingering uncertainty over Ibrahima Konate's future past next season and Joe Gomez's frequent injury woes, Slot & Co. have set their sights on securing the services of Palace centre-back Guehi. The player, who turns 25 this month, is said to be keen on a move to Anfield to be Virgil van Dijk's potential new central defensive running mate and is reportedly unwilling to sign an extension of his current deal with the Eagles, which expires in summer 2026. Guehi captained Palace to FA Cup glory in May following repeated rejected bids upwards of £50m from Newcastle a year ago but is now reported to have entered into 'advanced talks' with Liverpool, whose new-look backline in 2025-26 will also include Dutch right-back Frimpong and Hungary's former Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez. Oliver Glasner's side are reluctant to lose their defensive stalwart, who has been at Selhurst Park since 2021, but could be close to a deal for Sporting centre-back Ousmane Diomande, according to reports from Portugal on Tuesday. Advertisement That potential arrival, and a 'significant' big-money offer that Liverpool are thought to be cooking up, may sweeten the deal and persuade Palace to let Guehi go at the right price. Fellow England international Eberechi Eze could also be headed for the exit in south London this summer, with Arsenal and Tottenham emerging as his two likeliest suitors. Off the pitch, meanwhile, Palace await clarity on their eligibility to compete in next season's Europa League due to dual ownership issues with French outfit Lyon.

Jarell Quansah completes £35m Bayer Leverkusen move as Liverpool academy star pens emotional farewell message after joining Erik ten Hag's side

Jarell Quansah has left Liverpool for Bayer Leverkusen, the Premier League champions have confirmed. The versatile defender had fallen down the pecking order under Arne Slot after a breakout campaign with Jurgen Klopp the previous season, and has now left the Anfield club for £30million, plus £5m in add-ons. Having come through the academy ranks, Quansah, who can play at either centre back or right back, departs for Erik ten Hag 's Bayer Leverkusen side who are beginning a new era. So far this summer the 2023-24 Bundesliga champions have lost manager Xabi Alonso, star man Florian Wirtz and right back Jeremie Frimpong, leaving former United boss Ten Hag with a major rebuild. Yet one of his first acquisitions has been Quansah, who brings plenty of top level experience despite his relatively young age. As well as winning the U21 Euros with England, the centre back has also lifted two Carabao Cups and a Premier League title in his 58 appearances for Liverpool. In announcing the news, the boyhood Reds fan penned an emotional message on social media to his supporters. 'From the moment I walked through the doors of the Academy at 5 years old, I dreamed of one day wearing the Liverpool shirt at Anfield. 17 years later, I can now say I have lived that dream,' he wrote on Instagram. 'To my team-mates, thank you for welcoming me, pushing me, and believing in me. I've learned so much from sharing the pitch and dressing room with such amazing people and will never forget the incredible memories we've had. 'To the staff, the coaches, and everyone behind the scenes, your belief and dedication have always been a constant source of motivation. You have helped me grow not only as a footballer, but as a person as well. 'And to the fans, your support has always been unmatched. Whether at Anfield or away from home, hearing you sing never failed to inspire me. I will carry that with me wherever I go. 'Liverpool will always hold a special place in my heart. It's not just a club — it's a family! This is goodbye for now, but I'll always be watching — once a Red, always a Red.' Mail Sport reported in June that Liverpool will have a buy-back clause included in the deal for Quansah, who has penned terms on a five-year deal in Germany. In an emotional Instagram post Quansah paid tribute to everyone from the fans to the backroom staff during his time at Liverpool With Quansah's departure now confirmed, Liverpool will now focus on attempting to bring in a young centre-back. In addition to their interest in Crystal Palace 's Marc Guehi, Slot's team are also looking to sign another player with potential in that position. Over the past 12 months Liverpool looked at Leny Yoro before he joined Manchester United and Dean Huijsen prior to his switch to Real Madrid. Liverpool have been monitoring Ajax's Jorrel Hato, with the 19-year-old capable of playing at centre back or left back.

Man City's Guardiola ‘understands' Klopp's Club World Cup critique

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he is proud to fight for the title despite backlash. (EPA Images pic) ORLANDO : Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola said Sunday he can see Jurgen Klopp's point after the former Liverpool coach labelled the Club World Cup 'the worst idea ever implemented in football'. However the Catalan also said he wants his team to win Fifa's heavily criticised newly expanded competition this summer in the US, noting many of the complaints have come from teams which did not reach the tournament. Klopp, currently Red Bull's 'head of global soccer', told German newspaper Welt am Sonntag that the crowded calendar meant there was no time for players to recover mentally or physically, and he had serious concern over possible injuries. 'Jurgen – we fought together many, many times, I know where the idea comes from, we fought a lot in England when we went to Uefa meetings, especially on the Premier League, (about) the calendar, to try to (increase the) quality,' Guardiola told reporters. 'So the players rest, and the managers rest, (then) you have more quality, so it didn't surprise me, I understand him, I respect him. 'I have an incredible relationship with Jurgen, when we were rivals… I understand his argument, because his argument I would defend as well.' Guardiola's side are in the last 16 of the competition and face Saudi Arabian team Al-Hilal on Monday in Orlando. The coach said despite the criticism the tournament has received, he is 'proud' to be competing to win it. 'At the same time we're in a job, we follow Fifa, Uefa, Premier League, Serie A… the managers are not going to organise the competitions, everyone has their own role, they organise the competitions,' continued Guardiola. 'I have said many times, I am so proud to be here, because in the end many, many teams complain about the competitions, because they are not here, otherwise they would love maybe to be there. 'Their media will be here, their supporters will be here, there will be their income in terms of money to be here, and they will be happy to be there.' Man City have won six of the last eight Premier League titles, with Liverpool claiming the other two, including last season. England coach Thomas Tuchel said Arne Slot's Reds and Arsenal have an advantage over City for the upcoming campaign because they are resting during the summer. 'I try to not think about it, otherwise I will be so anxious,' added Guardiola. 'So I try to be relaxed, to enjoy the days here, the good vibes that we have, the competition, to try to win it.'
