Parents honour baby who died with rare genetic condition aged just nine days old

Fadi and Elizabeth Ghazala were determined to find a meaningful way to honour their daughter's memory after she died with a rare genetic condition last year aged just nine days old. They knew they wanted to do something special to remember Rita, who was born with Edwards' Syndrome, a rare condition caused by an extra chromosome in the body's cells. The couple, from Kirkintilloch in East Dunbartonshire, began a fundraising cycling challenge earlier this week aiming to raise money for Glasgow's Children's Hospital Charity. Fadi and Elizabeth say Rita was 'brave, resilient and peaceful' from the get-go. Fadi and Elizabeth Ghazala 'Rita gave us the best nine days of our lives,' Fadi told STV News. 'She was wonderful,' added Elizabeth. 'We just want to move forward with her legacy in our hearts because she made such a big impact on us.' Fadi and Elizabeth Ghazala Despite major gullet and windpipe surgery and an overnight emergency ventilation tube change at the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Rita died on December 17 last year. To honour their daughter, the couple will cycle 210 miles, connecting the three level four NICU wards across Scotland. Joined by family and friends, they began their journey on Wednesday at the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital. STV News On Saturday, they will complete the last leg of the challenge and head to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow. The family have already raised over £8,000 and hope to support the NICU in Glasgow with the creation of 'Rita's Room' – a space for counselling and comfort for other families going through palliative care. STV News Fadi said staff at the hospital gave Rita 'dignity in her nine days'. 'The love that they had shown her is something that we can never really repay,' he said. 'But we really just want to say thank you.' STV News Rita's grandad Anthony Tatlock is among those taking part in the fundraising challenge. He told STV News: 'Rita is our first grandchild. Her nine day life had such an impact on myself and my wife and the family. We felt we needed to do something to honour her life.' A JustGiving page has been set-up to support the fundraising efforts. Tributes to 'hard-working' Amazon delivery driver killed in Kent train crash

An Amazon delivery driver killed in a level crossing crash in Kent has been described as a 'great friend' who loved his family. Brandon Hatcher died after his van was hit at a crossing by a train in Teynham just after 12.45pm on July 13. The 23-year-old was pronouncded dead at the scene. Brandon's family have since paid tribute to the "young" dad who will remember him for his "humour" and "laid back look on life". They said: "Brandon was a Dad, Partner, Son, Brother, Grandson and Uncle amongst being a great friend to many who he came into contact with in his life. "His family are deeply saddened by his passing at such a tragically young age in an accident that could have been so easily avoided. "We hope as a result of this there is learning that stops this sort of tragedy happening again. "We will remember Brandon for his humour, laid back look on life, his smile and love for his family." A JustGiving has been set up to support his family which has already seen more than £12,000 donated. Organiser, Elena Santandreu Almagro, said: "We have recently lost our good friend, Brandon, to a tragic accident. "Brandon had the biggest heart, he was unintentionally funny, caring and he would have done anything for anyone that needed his help. "But most importantly, he was a loving father and the best partner. He was a hard working family man, who will be terribly missed. "Please, help us support his young family through this difficult times." Friends have described Brandon as a 'kind, funny' person who will be 'missed by all'. Rob Galkoff, a delivery service partner with Amazon, said: 'As a community, we are trying to raise some money for them, so any donations, no matter how small, would go a long way to help his family. "I know Amazon is also doing lots, but let's all do what we can, too.' Another person said that Brandon was one of the most "kindest" and caring people they'd ever met. They said: "I'm so sorry for everyone's loss, my heart goes out to his family and all his friends, Brandon was genuinely one of the most kindest and caring people I had ever met growing up, I'm sorry for your loss." Ben Marshall also wrote: "Really sad to hear of Brandon's passing. My memories of Brandon are full of laughter and jokes. "My thoughts are with his family. May he rest in peace."

Childhood best friends from Powys aim to conquer Kilimanjaro

TWO childhood best friends will be aiming to conquer Kilimanjaro later this year, in memory of a loved one. Kevin Percy and Tom Bradley, both from Llandrindod Wells, are trying to raise funds for the hospice that cared for Kev's father, Mark, in his final days. Mark, 64, received great care from St Michael's Hospice in Hereford towards the end of his life, and Kev and Tom will now take on the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world, in October. 'I am participating in the 'Conquer Kilimanjaro ' trek to raise funds for St Michael's Hospice in memory of a dear friend, Mark Percy,' said Tom in an emotional post about the challenge on his JustGiving fundraising page. 'The hospice provided compassionate care to Mark during his final days and I am deeply grateful for the support they offered.' Not only are Tom, 41, and Kev, 40, lifelong best friends, but Kev was best man at Tom's wedding recently. Tom also lived with Kev and Mark throughout much of his childhood. 'Joining me on this journey is my best man, Kev, and together we are embracing this new challenge with enthusiasm and determination,' added Tom. 'Our goal is to raise £5,000 for the hospice and I am reaching out to businesses that may be interested in sponsoring our trek by having their logo featured on our gear. 'Your support will make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who rely on St Michael's Hospice for care and comfort.' Tom and Kev will be climbing Kilimanjaro, which is a large dormant volcano in Tanzania, starting on October 16. It is set to be an 8-day hike up to Kilimanjaro's highest peak, Uhuru Peak, which stands at an elevation of 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level.

Man walking from John o' Groats to Land's End in aid of Yorkshire Air Ambulance

A MAN is preparing to take on a major fundraising challenge to support Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA). Jordan Lefley, 31, from Ilkley, will walk from John o' Groats to Land's End to raise awareness and funds for YAA. Setting off today, the electrical engineer aims to complete the 1,295-mile mission in around 70 days. Jordan told the Telegraph & Argus: "YAA is an independent charity, relying solely on public donations. "Each mission costs around £4,600 so that's how much I'm hoping to raise. "Every pound helps keep this amazing team in the sky, where they're needed most." Jordan explained why he was walking from John o' Groats to Land's End - and not the more usual route of Land's End to John o' Groats. "I realised that as I get towards September, the days will be getting shorter - but if I'm further south, I'll have that bit more daylight," he said. "I'm also trying to dodge the midge season in Scotland!" He added: "I'm sure there will be some challenges along the way, but I know it's a challenge I'll never forget." To sponsor Jordan, visit He has also produced a website - - where people can track his progress along the way.
