UAE Supreme Court rejects appeals by convicts in terror group case
UAE's Supreme Federal Court rejected the appeal submitted by the convicts in the Justice and Dignity Organisation case and upheld the original verdict. However, for another appeal filed by the public prosecutor, the court's State Security Chamber will pronounce the verdict on April 8. The public prosecutor's appeal is regarding a portion of the ruling related to the lapse of the criminal case for 24 defendants on charges of collaborating with and providing funds to the terrorist 'Reform Call' (Da'wat Al-Islah) Organisation. On July 10 last year, 53 members of the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood organisation were convicted in this case, along with six companies. The Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeals State Security Division sentenced them to penalties ranging from life imprisonment to fines of up to Dh20 million. Forty-three of the defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment; five defendants received 15-year prison sentences. Another five defendants were sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined Dh10 million each. Additionally, six companies and their officials were fined Dh20 million each, with orders to dissolve and close their premises, and confiscate their assets. The court also dismissed the criminal cases against 24 defendants accused of collaborating with and providing financial support to the Reform Call Organisation, and acquitted one defendant of all charges.
