Zverev calls for patience with talents, Becker comparisons 'stupid'

Speaking ahead of Monday's Wimbledon start, Zverev said: "Boris won Wimbledon at 17. Justin Engel is not playing here." Advertisement Engel, 17, recently won two matches in Stuttgart to become the youngest quarter-finalist at a grass court tournament in 40 years since Becker's first of three Wimbledon titles in 1985. He has risen to 219 in the rankings. World number three Zverev named Engel a "super player" but added: "You don't have to compare him to Boris, you also don't have to compare him to me. "Leave the boy in peace - in two ot three years we will see how good he is," Zverev said. "He still has a lot of work ahead. And he should also not think: I need this result to match Boris, myself or whoever. He must develop." Advertisement Only three German men are at this Wimbledon, Zverev, Jan-Lennard Struff and Daniel Altmaier, the lowest showing since 1983. Zverev said he is upbeat that a new generation of German players will be coming through. Engel is not alone as prodigy, as three other 17-year-olds have had encouraging results. Diego Dedura has started playing on the ATP Tour, while Niels McDonald and Max Schönhaus contested the junior final at the recent French Open, with McDonald taking the trophy. "It will change in two or three years, we're currently in an intermediate phase," Zverev said. "The older generation is well over 30, the younger generation is under 20 and we don't have much in the 10 or 15 years in between. The new generation is coming along nicely."

German youngster Justin Engel, who's enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough event in the Stuttgart Open, has finally had his adventures ended by Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime. The 17-year-old became the youngest man in 40 years - since Boris Becker won at Wimbledon - to reach the quarter-finals of an ATP grass-court event but he proved no match for Auger-Aliassime in a 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 defeat. Engel had claimed his first professional victory on grass earlier this week when he beat Australian James Duckworth, following it up with an upset win over US seventh seed Alex Michelsen, but beating the experienced Canadian proved to be a step too far for the teenager in Friday's quarter-finals. "His serve was so incredibly good today that I felt pressure in my own service games," Engel said. "But it was great fun playing in front of this crowd again. I can't wait to play here again next year." German 17-year-old Engel becomes youngest grass-court quarterfinalist since 1985

Engel beat seventh-seeded Alex Michelsen of the United States 6-4, 6-4 to become the youngest quarterfinalist ever in Stuttgart. He is the youngest man to reach the quarters of any grass-court event since Becker won Wimbledon as a 17-year-old in 1985. Engel, who turns 18 in October, will next face Félix Auger-Aliassime of Canada on Friday. It has been a remarkable 12 months for Engel, who only broke into the top 800 in the rankings last July, having entered the 2024 season as No. 1,344. He is now guaranteed to move into the top 250. Engel this week also became the second youngest player since 1990, behind Rafael Nadal, to have won a match on all three surfaces — grass, clay and hard-court — on the tour.

The 17-year-old German gave former U.S. Open semifinalist Auger-Aliassime a tough fight in the first set before the Canadian took a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win. Auger-Aliassime next plays second-seeded Taylor Fritz in the semifinals. The Canadian's victory keeps up a record of reaching the semifinals all three times he's played in Stuttgart. He was runner-up in 2019 and 2021. The Canadian won 74 per cent of his first-serve points and saved four of five break chances. He took the opening set in a tight tiebreak before Khachanov responded with a single break in the second.
