Minister visits K-IV project to review progress
LAHORE: Federal Minister for Water Resources Mian Muhammad Mueen Wattoo visited Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme (K-IV Project) and reviewed the ongoing development works on the project. The federal minister visited in detail various key work fronts, which included intake structure and pumping stations being constructed at Keenjhar lake, water conveyance system consisting of pressurized pipeline from Keenjhar to Karachi as well as water reservoirs and filtration plants in suburbs of Karachi. During the visit, the federal minister was briefed by the project team about the site-wise progress achieved so far, remaining works and timelines for their completion. It was briefed that construction work on all components of the project is in progress at a satisfactory pace. Overall physical progress stands at 63 percent, while a sum of Rs 86.4 billion has so far been spent on construction of the project. Phase-I is planned to be completed in 2026, provided the required funds are made accordingly. Speaking on the occasion, the federal minister expressed satisfaction over the pace of work and reiterated the federal government's full support for the project. K-IV is a vital scheme for supplementing water supplies to Karachi to meet water requirements for the urban use. 'We are committed to ensuring completion of K-IV at the earliest as it is one of the priority projects of the Ministry of Water Resources,' he added. The minister emphasized the need for enhanced coordination among all stakeholders to remove bottlenecks for smooth implementation of the project. He also directed the consultants and the contractors to adhere to the quality standards stipulated for the project. The K-IV project is a critical infrastructure initiative aimed at addressing Karachi's acute water shortage by providing an additional 650 million gallons per day (MGD) water to Karachi from Keenjhar lake. The project is planned to be completed in two phases. At present, WAPDA is constructing Phase-I of to supply 260 MGD water to Karachi. Phase-II, when implemented, will also augment another 390 MGD water to the system for Karachi. K-IV project hits 63% completion
Federal Minister for Water Resources Mian Muhammad Mueen Wattoo visited the Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme (K-IV Project) to review development work. As per a statement released on Wednesday, the minister inspected key project components, including the intake structure and pumping stations at Keenjhar Lake, the pressurised pipeline to Karachi, water reservoirs, and filtration plants in suburban areas. The project team briefed the minister on site-wise progress and timelines. Overall physical progress has reached 63%, with Rs86.4 billion spent so far. Construction on all components is ongoing, and Phase-I is expected to complete by 2026, contingent on timely funding. The minister expressed satisfaction with the pace and reaffirmed the federal government's full support. He stressed the project's importance to Karachi's urban water needs and urged better stakeholder coordination to remove bottlenecks. He also directed consultants and contractors to maintain quality standards.

K-IV project: A number of key targets achieved: Wapda chief
KARACHI: Wapda Chairman Engr Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd) has announced that Wapda has succeeded in achieving a number of key targets on Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme (K-IV project) and concerted efforts are being made to complete Phase-I of the project in June 2026. During his visit to the Project here on Thursday, he further said that prompt availability of the required funds is the key for completion of the Project as per the schedule. The Chairman had a detailed visit of various work fronts to review construction progress. These work fronts included intake and pumping stations at Kinjhar Lake and water conveyance system comprising pressurized pipelines being laid from Kinjhar Lake to Karachi. The project team along with the Consultants and the Contractors briefed the Chairman about progress on all eight contracts including intake, pumping stations, pipelines, water reservoirs and filtration facilities. Two critical activities i.e. inserting two water carrier pipelines in sleeve pipes at main railways crossing and hydrostatic testing on the first 15 Km of the pipeline have recently been completed, while the second hydrostatic testing for another 25 Km single pipeline will be carried out in June. Timelines for the remaining works and plans to achieve the targets as well as financial progress and requirement of funds were also discussed during the briefing. Cumulative physical progress on the Project is 63 percent. Rs. 75.21 billion have so far been spent on the Project, while PC-I of the Project's Phase-I amounts to Rs. 126.4 billion. Underlining the importance of K-IV Project for Karachi, the Chairman directed the Project Team to excel construction activities to meet the timelines. He also directed them to maintain close liaison with other stakeholders for timely arrangement of power supply by the Government of Sindh and augmentation of the water distribution system by Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC).
