Malaysia on alert over potential Mossad surveillance

by HIDAYATH HISHAM MALAYSIA recognises its strong and unwavering support for Palestine may attract scrutiny from foreign intelligence agencies, including Israel's Mossad. Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government, through the Home Ministry (KDN), has implemented enhanced security measures to identify and counter potential threats to national safety. 'The presence of international intelligence agencies, including Mossad, has indeed been identified,' he said during PM's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today. He was responding to Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (PN-Machang), who asked what steps the government was taking to prevent Mossad agents from entering the country. Anwar said Malaysian intelligence had confirmed serious concerns about foreign espionage activities, including a case involving a local married couple allegedly collaborating with Mossad. 'The latest briefing by Malaysian intelligence confirms that it is taking this matter very seriously, especially after it was proven that Mossad operatives were present, including a case involving a Malay husband and wife who acted either as agents or collaborators,' he added. Separately, he said the foreign visitor autogate system at the country's main entry points is now fully operational. 'The autogate issue is also linked to Interpol systems to enhance capabilities, and thankfully, it has now been resolved,' he said.

PDRM Takes The Lead At NSRC To Strengthen Online Financial Fraud Crackdown

PUTRAJAYA, July 16 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has officially assumed leadership of the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) operations, effective immediately, as part of intensified efforts to combat the growing threat of online financial fraud and scams. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail announced the matter today, stating that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has endorsed PDRM's appointment to lead the NSRC, given the alarming rise in financial scams nationwide. He said that previously, the NSRC operated as a collaborative effort between the National Financial Crime Prevention Centre (NFCC), PDRM, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), without a clearly designated lead agency. 'On average, the NSRC's 997 hotline receives nearly 500 calls daily, with total losses reaching RM1.6 billion according to the latest data from the National Social Council,' Saifuddin told reporters after attending the Home Ministry's (KDN) monthly assembly here. Also in attendance were KDN secretary-general Datuk Awang Alik Jeman and Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay. Saifuddin said that for now, the NSRC's operations will be managed by the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID), with 139 new positions set to be created to support the centre's expansion. A new location for the NSRC will also be identified, replacing the current office housed at BNM in Kuala Lumpur, he said. 'Coordination on staffing and logistics is currently underway between the KDN secretary-general and the Public Service Department,' he remarked. Saifuddin said PDRM will also review existing regulations and the role of financial institutions to strengthen the national response to online financial fraud.

Settling footballers' unpaid salaries with 'duit kutu'?

KUALA LUMPUR: It's insulting and humiliating. That is how current and former players of Kelantan Darul Naim (KDN) described the attempt by the team management to settle months of salaries owing to them. KDN midfielder Jasmir Mehat voiced his frustration over the club's offer, which includes a 50 per cent cut from the three months of unpaid salary, monthly instalments of RM200 until the debt is settled, and match-based payments of RM500-RM1,000 for only five matches between Feb and April. "We're not asking for anything extra. We want what we've earned, but being told we'll be paid RM200 a month feels like we're not being taken seriously," said Jasmir. "At that rate, some of us would have to wait nearly a decade to be paid in full. It doesn't feel fair or respectful to professionals who gave their commitment to the team." Jasmir added that the players were open to discussions, but the solutions offered so far showed a lack of genuine intention to resolve the matter quickly or reasonably, and equated it to paying with "duit kutu". Meanwhile, former KDN head coach Rezal Zambery Yahya said that nearly 20 former players and staff have rejected the club's proposed terms and given KDN until tomorrow to respond before raising the matter with the FA of Malaysia. "We're not water filter salesmen who can be paid RM200 a month until the debt is cleared," said Rezal. "Paying per match doesn't make sense either because there's no such clause in our contracts. Despite that, we've offered them more practical solutions. It's up to them now to be reasonable."

Home Ministry leans into AI to predict future crimes, target ‘gateway offences'

KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — The Home Ministry (KDN) is embracing artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance national security and improve public service delivery, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said today. The ministry is implementing a new policy theme, 'AI for KDN, KDN for AI,' to integrate machine learning tools across its key agencies, including the police, immigration, and national registration departments, he said. 'AI is no longer a choice; it's a necessity. We are upskilling our officers at universities like UKM, UiTM, and others to build our internal AI capabilities,' the home minister said. Providing a key example, he revealed that KDN had analysed 1.2 million criminal case records using AI tools and identified patterns that showed certain offenders were likely to go on and commit 31 other violent crimes. 'We found that if we want to reduce crime, we must target the 'mother and father of all crimes', the gateway offences,' Saifuddin stated. AI is also being used to streamline border processes, he said. In Johor, facial recognition systems now allow motorcyclists and bus passengers to cross the border with Singapore in just three to four seconds, a significant improvement from the 1.5 to two hours experienced previously during peak times. 'It's all based on data. The more we digitise and analyse, the more efficiently we can serve the public,' he added.

NEXG secures contract extensions from Home Ministry worth over RM45m

NEXG Bhd (formerly known as Datasonic Group Bhd) has secured three contract extensions from the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) via its wholly-owned subsidiary, Datasonic Technologies Sdn Bhd (DTSB), for the continued supply and maintenance of national identity and travel document systems. The company announced today that DTSB received and accepted letters of extension (LOE), all dated July 2, from KDN on July 7, 2025. The first extension involves comprehensive maintenance services for card personalisation centres at the National Registration Department (JPN) for a period of 14 months, from December 1, 2025 to January 31, 2027. The additional fifth ceiling contract value is RM15.86 million, inclusive of 8% sales and service tax (SST). The second contract covers the supply of MyKad, MyTentera and MyPOCA raw cards and consumables to JPN. It has been extended for six months from December 1, 2025 to May 31, 2026. The additional third ceiling contract value amounts to RM29.68 million, bringing the total cumulative value of the contract to RM146.03 million. The third contract relates to the supply of Malaysian passport documents and polycarbonate biodata pages to the Immigration Department (Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia). Both scopes have been extended for a further six months from December 1, 2025 to May 31, 2026, with no changes to the contract ceilings or quantities. As part of the terms, DTSB is required to maintain performance bonds with extended validity periods until May 31, 2027. This includes RM2.23 million for the passport documents contract and RM3.53 million for the polycarbonate biodata pages. NEXG said the contracts are expected to contribute positively to the group's earnings and net assets per share for the financial year ending March 31, 2026 and the duration of the respective contracts. NEXG has been a longstanding technology partner to the Malaysian government in delivering secure personal identification solutions, including biometric passports and national identity cards. –TMR
