Residents urged to be vigilant after woodland fire

The fire service has urged residents to help reduce the risk of wildfires this summer following a woodland blaze. Kent Fire & Rescue Service (KFRS) said a dog walker discovered the fire in East Blean Woods in Hoath, Canterbury. The fire service said it believed the blaze was caused by a disposable barbecue that had been left unattended while still hot. Yasimin Djemal, who was walking her dogs through the woods, said: "I could smell smoke, but I couldn't see it, so I wandered for a bit and then I saw it. I was horrified." She added: "We're so lucky to have these woods, and to know someone could just leave a fire like this is gutting." Firefighters extinguished the flames using flexi-packs and a fogging unit, two all-terrain vehicles and one fire engine. The incident took place late last month and KFRS is reminding residents to exercise fire safety precautions, especially as warm weather is expected to continue. KFRS crew manager Dave Turner said: "Thankfully Yasimin came across the fire before it could fully develop, but the outcome could've been very different. "During the summer, the ground can be extremely hot and dry, which means a fire can spread quickly and cause devastating consequences for wildlife, property and livelihoods." Mr Turner said leaving any outdoor flame unattended was dangerous. "Items such as disposable barbecues and cigarettes need to be fully cool before being safely disposed of," he added. "It's also important to only barbecue in designated areas." Follow BBC Kent on Facebook, on X, and on Instagram. Send your story ideas to southeasttoday@ or WhatsApp us on 08081 002250. Cow rescued after becoming trapped in mud

A cow has been rescued after getting stuck in mud in Kent. Nettie the cow was walking in the High Halden field, near Ashford, when she got bogged down in mud on Friday. Its owner, farmer Martyn Dean, said the rescue operation took nearly three and a half hours. Kent Fire & Rescue Service said: "Our animal rescue crews weren't cowed by the challenge and we pulled Nettie safely out with slings." The fire service said Nettie was helped back onto solid ground and was safe and well. "Nettie was checked by the vet and is now safely back in her barn enjoying some well-earned hay with her calf," a spokesperson said. Mr Dean said: "Kent Fire & Rescue were excellent, saving us and Nettie a whole heap of bother. "Just another legendiary rescue from KFRS' animal rescue crew." Fire continues to rage at scrap yard

More than two dozen firefighters continue to tackle a blaze at a scrap yard in Kent which broke out more than 24 hours ago. Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) said it was called to the London Scrap Terminal in Northfleet Mill in Crete Hall Road, Gravesend, shortly after 02:00 BST on Monday. On Tuesday morning, 25 fire fighters were still working to put out the "deep seated" fire, which has seen an estimated 5,000 tonnes of scrap metal caught alight. The fire service is asking residents nearby to keep windows closed as there is heavy smoke in the area. The fire service is using a high-volume pump to take water from the nearby estuary to tackle the fire. Jim Chaston, from KFRS, said: "We working really hard, with great help from the on-site staff using their heavy machinery, to work our way into the hotspots." Mr Chaston said he expects crews to remain at the scrap yard until "at least tomorrow". "From there, it's really about how quickly we can work our way into the pile," he said. The cause of the fire is currently unknown, Mr Jones added. Follow BBC Kent on Facebook, on X, and on Instagram.
